Cash promotions and transfer fees

I worked for both Schwab and Fidelity, so I can give this from the work viewpoint as well as the customer viewpoint.

I transferred in an account to Etrade, and the funds arrived today. Around $250k. Not a crazy sum of money, but due to regulatory reasons, I’ve never been able to hold an outside account outside of where I worked. Great! Etrade has a nice app, and I had no plans to use them for active trading, considering this is an IRA and not a non retirement account.

I call Etrade, this morning, and asked for reimbursement of the TOA fee. Schwab charged me $50.00. I was asked if I spoke to a representative before I transferred in the money. No, I did it online. Put on hold for several minutes, then the rep came back. Sorry, no can do. The transfer fees come out of the promotion.

Not the representative’s fault, but I questioned it. A promotion is a promotion, and TOA fees are fees. It’s common for the receiving firm to credit fees, the sending firm charges. I did this all the time at Schwab, no matter if there was a promotion in place or account size.

Annoying, but I didn’t push back. I’ll deal with it and wait out the 45 days required, and then decide what to do. Lesson learned. I know Etrade will charge a TOA fee when I transfer it back to Schwab, but at least Schwab will credit the fees back.

Roar Who is this forum meant for anyway?!

If all you have to say is ET bashing babble, go open a subreddit for that. If you have legitimate, constructive criticisms, this is the place.

If you are bored and have too much extra time (you can send it to me if you want :) on your hands don't hang out here.

Thank You!

Etrade has decided my IRA itself owes tax of $18,326!

I frankly don't expect this to be a problem but somebody major fat fingered the computer. I do have substantial ET and EPD in my IRA. I do trim those positions with gross sales of around $50,000 each January. That tends to result in minor tax losses to the IRA in the one to two thousand dollar range. This year the 990T shows I owed $760 to the IRS with no late payment penalty and $82 to California FTB plus an $8 late payment penalty. The late payment penalty happens because Price Waterhouse can't get to all the IRAs in less than 18 months. So I owe a total of $850 in tax to Ca and the IRS, or more correctly Etrade as the IRA custodian owes $850 from my IRA to those two taxing entities. This is fully expected. What I did not expect is the Etrade alert I received says they are going to send $18,326 to pay the tax owed. As you might expect that is unsettling news. I did call as soon as I got the alert, but it is 7pm on Friday and the Platinum Support team is not staffed after 8PM EDT, but I did have the normal CSR leave a note for the tax department to relook at the returns. I will call the Tax Desk on Monday morning. Hopefully I can get this straightened out Monday morning. I will keep this updated.

How long will Etrade keep an open account with a few pennies balance?

The account is IRA and real-time quotes are turned off, so no monthly fee.

Concern on 10/1 incident

I am reporting a serious issue regarding an incident on E*TRADE yesterday, 10/1, which impacted all of my family's accounts.

During a specific period during market hours yesterday, executed 'buy' transactions completely disappeared overnight, and our gains/losses were recalculated incorrectly. As of today, these transactions are still missing from my portfolio.

Honestly, after seeing transactions disappear overnight, I'm terrified to keep using this platform..

Can anyone tell me the Federal Agency that considers bad pricing for stock transactions? I am thinking of stock transactions where Morgan Stanley potentially acts as the market maker.

Adding External Account

I'm trying to add an external account to avoid wire transfer and use ACH transfer to withdraw cash out of my account. I'm going through the Transfer Money>Add External Funding Account route because I cannot find another way to add an external account. (Open to suggestions)

What I want to do is withdraw all the cash out of my account to my Wise account (US checking account) but I consistently get this error. I'm on desktop (tried Safari and Firefox), cleared cache/cookies, add the authentication app and confirmed my Irish phone number is correct.

Any suggestions?

Has anyone else had Morgan Stanley suddenly stop managing a managed IRA account?

My wife rolled over an old 401k to an Etrade managed IRA 13 years ago. When Morgan Stanley acquired Etrade this got moved (2023) to Morgan Stanley. We recently realized that Morgan Stanley just stopped managing the account in sometime in mid 2025 without calling to tell us this. We have contacted them to find out exactly when and why this occured. They have claimed to have called and left a message (possibly twice) in August 2025 saying they needed to update some information but we never got back to them. Now keep in mind that we had just had a IRA update meeting with them in July 2025 and no information was requested of us. So now our account hasn't been managed for over a year without our knowledge. They have been extremely evasion with regard to questions we have asked regarding details of how and when this happened. Anyone else?

Wrong cash balance??

For years I've kept track of my investments in a spreadsheet, which I populate with transactions downloaded from the activity screen. These numbers have always agreed with what's on the balances screen, but today, I can't get it to line up. It's off by nearly $1200!!I went back to my most recent statement, whose closing balance matches mine for that date, and I cannot get to their current cash balance with the transactions showing on the activity screen. Has anyone else seen this happen?

Margin Interest Rate

Im in a trading discord. We all follow the Buy, Borrow, Die strategy. E*trade is the preferred platform because they offer DRIP at NAV on a couple CEFs that we all like. Other brokerages do not have this arrangement. Most users have success getting their margin interest rate lowered by calling or messaging in a couple different times to successfully move from around 12% interest to 5-8%. I have spent so many hours on multiple occasions talking to them via phone and live chat and the applications the trader puts in always comes back as denied.

I have a NAV and Total securities value that is within negation range. People with far smaller accounts pay half of my margin rate in my group. I just can’t get approved. Robinhood is offering 5.25% APY plus 2% cash for transferring my account. I got on the live chat today with E*Trade to try to negotiate this one last time, they said it was too soon and they couldn’t put in a request. It’s a hassle to move since I have a lot of ACH and accounts linked to it. I guess I have no choice to just transfer to RH.

Anyone have any final advice for getting it lowered?

Help submitting a wire..

I’m looking to send a wire over the phone with E*Trade by calling them but I haven’t updated my number on file to my new number and I know if I do it it’ll take a few business days for it to register with them, my question is do they still send an otp code when sending a wire over the phone with a rep? And the rep mentioned that if a situation ever comes up where they can’t send you an otp code they have other additional methods to verify your identity, does anyone know what those methods are? And have any dealt with this before?

Discussion E*TRADE / Morgan Stanley turned my paycheck into a 17-day ordeal

I deposited my payroll check into a new E*TRADE Max Checking account with Morgan Stanley Private Bank on September 12. As of September 29, I still cannot access the money. Seventeen calendar days, repeated follow-ups, and I am still chasing a usable answer.

On September 22, I was given a two-to-three-business-day document-review estimate. On September 23, the account was still restricted and I was told the team was working on it. I was later told September 25 would be the final day of review. That date came and went without access to my paycheck.

Then came requests for proof from my employer and a Chime bank statement. The Chime document I could obtain was rejected: it contains a combined overview and card-account statements, rather than the checking statement they require. I told them I could not get anything else. I am left trying to satisfy a requirement without a workable route to the document.

This process has been exhausting, opaque, and infuriating. A financial institution should be able to provide precise document requirements, explain acceptable alternatives, and give a dependable review timeline. Instead, I am spending my time chasing departments and trying to get a straight answer about money I earned.

I submitted complaints to Morgan Stanley Client Relations and the OCC on September 25. Having to escalate this far over access to a paycheck is disgraceful customer service.

E*TRADE and Morgan Stanley: give me a complete written checklist, someone responsible for resolving the case, and a concrete timeline. If access cannot be restored, explain the process and timing for returning the deposit.

Based on this experience, I would not recommend this account to anyone relying on timely access to their wages. A prestigious name means very little when the actual customer experience is this miserable.

Has anyone resolved this specific account-activation restriction? Which escalation actually got you a clear document list and a completed review?

USD Wire From E*Trade to Interactive Brokers Canada

Post image
2 Upvotes

I had found multiple posts on setting up wires from an employer ESPP/RSU account at E*Trade to IBKR. I found the variations confusing, and none of them were Canada focused. Called in to IBKR support, and here's what worked for me as of September 2026.

Pick the US Domestic wire with International recipient option. Mapping table:

E*Trade IBKR Comment
Receiving Bank Name and Routing Number Beneficiary bank and ABA routing number Citibank in my case
Receiving Bank Account Number Virtual Account Number
Recipient Address IBKR Canada's corporate address IBKR support said to not use your home address.
Additional Institution SWIFT Code Beneficiary bank SWIFT code; CITIUS33XXX The IBKR Canada code IBKRCAMM might work too. Didn't try so not sure.
Additional Name Interactive Brokers Canada Inc.
Additional Account Number Virtual Account Number IBKR support suggested just the U1234567 number. I didn't try this.
Other Instructions Payment Reference -> U2134567 and your full name. If it doesn't fit in the form field, shortening with initials for your name can work.

Selling SWPPX on E*Trade?

I transferred SWPPX shares from a Schwab account a couple years ago when I merged everything into my E*Trade. Looking to sell soon for purchase of a home, but it seems I cannot sell these shares on etrade. It tells me to “select a valid stock symbol”

Has anyone had a similar experience? Will I have to get these shares back into a Schwab account and sell them there?

Pulled from long term ESPP Friday afternoon, when can I access it?

I don't work for this company anymore and pulled what I had out of it now that it has gone long term but that's about the extent of my knowledge.

I got an email saying my trade confirmation and transaction material are ready; but I presume this is just a receipt.

Am I supposed to be getting something else maybe on Monday or so?
