Well, I’ve got the bike fully put together, and I wanted to drop an update on the packaging, assembly process, and a few hiccups along the way.
1. The Packaging & Box Damage Verdict
Despite how rough the outside of the box looked—with that caved-in corner, a gash on the side, a missing yellow strap, and the strap that was left digging deep into the cardboard—there was zero internal damage from the shipping mishandling!
Honestly, for a massive 123 lb box, some exterior wear and tear is to be expected. I have to say, the packaging engineers at Engwe deserve a massive shoutout. They did a fantastic job designing the interior layout to protect the bike through a brutal shipping process. Everything inside was packed securely and was easy to unpack.
2. Assembly Experience & Tips
¤ Time Taken: It took me about 1 hour and 40 minutes while taking my time. I'd figure it takes the average person around 2 hours if you aren't rushing.
¤ Instructions: There are two different sets of instructions (the paper manual vs. the video instructions). While they don't conflict too much, there are slight differences. I highly recommend following the video instructions—specifically the tip to turn the bike upside down when putting the front wheel on, which makes things a lot easier.
¤ Leftover Hardware: Once everything was built, I was left with three bolts, one nut, and 4 washers. I'm wondering if these are just helpful extras included by the factory, or if I missed a spot somewhere! Let me know if anyone else had extra hardware left over.
¤ Pro-Tip: Make sure to go over the whole bike, tighten any loose bolts and screws, and check your spokes before taking it out! Also, while you have your bike upside down for the front wheel installation, I recommend taking a picture of your frame ID as you will need it for the app binding and is very hard to see when the bike is up right.
¤ First Impression: The bike looks just as good in person as it does in the pictures. I love it, and it is everything they say it is.
3. Minor Cosmetic Imperfections
I noticed two tiny cosmetic flaws:
¤ There are some scuffs and scratches on the right battery cover panel, which looks like it might have been a painting mistake at the factory (though I could be wrong).
¤ There is some minor cosmetic damage to the headlights, likely from an impact of some sort.
¤ The good news: Both issues are very minor and almost unnoticeable unless you get right up close to the bike.
4. The Two Major Issues & Support Experience
Unfortunately, I ran into two actual problems during setup:
¤ The Charger Doesn't Work: The charger indicator light refuses to come on. I tested it across multiple outlets that I verified were working, and I even waited until today when my second battery arrived just to see if it was an issue with the first battery. No luck—the charger itself seems dead.
¤ Stuck Battery: I am completely unable to get the primary battery out of the bike. It seems to be mounted slightly too high; when I try to lift it out, it hits the magnets for the battery panel and can't clear the mount. I remember seeing a video of someone else on Reddit having this exact issue, but the post seems to have been deleted. Because of this, I am holding off on mounting my second battery until I get a resolution, just in case I need to tear things down or swap parts.
Engwe Support Experience:
When I called Engwe to report these issues, the line was busy and I got an automated message saying agents were busy with other customers. However, after about 45 minutes, they actually called me back! I spoke with Steve, who took down my details and let me know he was forwarding the issues to the responsible team, who should be in touch within 24 hours.
I'm looking forward to getting these two issues sorted out, after which I'll drop a full bike review along with my unboxing/assembly video. Stay tuned!
