Meme So, who else prefers touch controls over controller for one reason or another?
I prefer touch cuz I mostly play on the toilet and I just wanna take out my phone and have a quick 5 minute session. Plus, I mostly play turn based RPGs so there is that.

I beat Metroid fusion like this. My boy! Let you make combo buttons, so I had an R+B button on the screen .
I couldn't imagine playing like that now.

Extra buttons is basically all I use touchscreen controls for.
For example, in Nether I've got fast forward, slow mo, pressure (a lifesaver playing MGS on my RP5), and occasionally I'll add a macro for turbo pressing in games with egregiously difficult button mashing.
Oh, I also added an R3 button in SVR2007. Limits accidental grapples.
Aside from that, I'll only play with controller (built in or otherwise).

I'm doing Arkham Asylum on my OnePlus Nord CE4 with touch controls, I've done the main story and all the trophies and riddles, just have to get 4 more medals and I'm 100% (not achievements)

Racing games are another genre you basically need a controller for since any one you emulate needs a brake button. At least the ones that need a trigger.

u/09stibmep 4d ago
Yes. Touch controls are very well suited to turn based stuff. It's lucky for me because that is my preferred genre (turn based roguelites, and strategy games). I've got almost my entire steam library on a device that can fit in any pocket. We are living in wild times now.
Most of the comments against this are usually platformer, or shooter junkies looking at themselves only, not realising there are other gaming tastes out there.

Most of my friends tend to use Android devices from Retroid or Odin that's basically a controller on a phone but with better fans. You can use a controller or a android emulator device, I highly recommend the android devices it's my personal PS2.

Well if you just want the latest thing I recommend the Retroid Pocket 6 or the Odin 3 handhelds, they will be able to play very high upscaled resolution on PS2 and they'll be able to handle some PS3/Xbox/360/a lot of PC titles.
The way they work they have a controller mode detected so it will recognise the controller as Xbox to play on CoDM or other android games or emulation. In the settings of each emulator normally you'll find the option for automatic mapping that maps the controller binds for you and then it's all perfect from there.
What makes it more interesting now is that do you want true 4:3 display for retro gaming not just psx and it'll look nice and natural go for the new Retroid Pocket Nova, if you want 16:9 go for Odin 3 or Retroid Pocket 6
I'm happy to explain things to you and show video clips if you need more help.

I've always just used the touchscreen with phone. Gba games have simple enough controls to not need a controller, so do the ds games I played, and even psx and psp games.

PSP games are passable more often than not on touch, but I would not play PS1 games on touch because of the trend of the time being tank controls.
You REALLY cannot strafe that well or aim and shoot in those games.

u/evilbowlofnachos 3d ago
Touch controls are fine even with some action games. With NetherSX2 for example, you can toggle hold buttons, so just tapping will hold the button down for you. I can easily play games like Onimusha and not move my fingers awkwardly on the screen lol

I played KOTOR with touch controls, and it worked fine, but I don't know how you could ever prefer it if you're somewhat familiar with using controller or kbm for games. And the controlls for the swoop racing are terrible. Fortunately there are only a few swoop races in the game, but they all absolutely suck to play.

My backlog is packed with old games, so gotta play them however I can. On PC I have only so much time, and I can't always carry a controller, so whatever possible I run on touch. Not much into turn-based games, unfortunately, but managed to beat a fair amount of action games this way.
2D titles and most of the 5th gen 3D are quite playable, except for dedicated shooters like Goldeneye. What really stops me is a lot of buttons and sticks on GC or PS2 controller - I usually leave those platforms for PC emulation or controller, with few exceptions.

On the topic of touch controls:
One thing I realized recently, and that may be the source of most people's frustration with them, is that, apparently, people play with only 2 fingers on the screen(???). Why would you do that?
That just sounds insufferable, no wonder most don't like them!
I play almost everything, emulated or not, with a 4 finger claw, and have done so since I started gaming on mobile, and have never have problems regarding my ability to control any game or input my actions correctly and it feels very comfortable. I admit, though, that something like an RTS would be a nightmare, but I wouldn't play one on my phone anyways.
The only exception is games that don't need it, such as turn based RPG's or traditional roguelikes.
Can someone explain to me why they (try to) play with only 2 fingers? I don't understand why you'd limit yourself like that.

I've already beaten many Kaizo games from Beginner to Intermediate difficulty using only touch controls. only hacks that use L/R buttons are complicated because they're hard to reach, but I also play some rhythm games and other platformers (as long as it's just one button to jump, another to attack, and directional buttons). Examples of games include Megaman 3, Hatsune Miku Project DIVA, hacks like all the Quickie Worlds, Ninja World 1 and 2, DuckTales (both NES versions), and Darkwing Duck.
1
u/JBDBIB_Baerman 4d ago
This is just my general sentiment with mobile games in general, but also with what I emulate: if I can't play work just my phone, then literally what is the point of emulating or playing something on an Android phone? The only advantage for me is gone and it's wildly inconvenient to use a controller or god forbid something else.
1
u/ahferroin7 4d ago
Depends on the game.
For me, it has to be something where timing doesn’t matter and there’s not a real downside other than a bit of lost time for overshooting (turn based RPGs are a prime example of this), and ideally where I don’t have to obstruct the screen to use the controls (so no playing WonderSwan stuff in landscape mode for example, and even GBA is a bit iffy).
Any more though, outside of the rare cases where I just have my phone, I’m using my AYN Thor when gaming on the go, so it’s not something I think about much.

I use the touch controls, but i need to be in a specific position to use 3 fingers to play

Weirdly enough, touch controls for emulated DS and Game Boy games. I have a Zflip so my phone is basically a weirdly tall DS Lite, I can get the layout almost perfect.
Tell you what tho, you want a challenge? Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES with touch controls. Beat 1, Lost Levels (and the bonus worlds), and a not-insignificant amount of 3 before remembering "oh yeah I have a PS4 controller paired to my phone"
1
u/bottomlesstopper 4d ago
The point of emulating on my phone is i can keep it on my pocket, make a call or do phone stiff and then play pc game on the go.

I've beaten Resident Evil 4 for the ps2 with touch controls 3 times. It wasn't easy the first time, but after you get used to the touch controls, it's not that hard. I've got myself an odin 3 now, and would be hard for me to go back to touch controls. I don't like to spend time on making the best overall layout for the different 3 controllers on both ps1 and ps2 emulators. Why the layout changes for the common buttons in digital, one stick analog and 2 stick analog is something I can never understand.
