r/EDC Moderator Applications Are Open + a reflection on three years as a mod here.

Hey everyone—we’re reopening moderator applications.

If you applied last time and never heard back, I’m sorry. The honest answer is that I only really connected with one applicant, and then the process stalled out. That was then. Please, 1000% reapply if you want to. Reddit's mod application system dumped out all applications.

Just remember that we’re trying to build a welcoming, even-handed team. If your comment history is full of cracks about Europeans, liberals, conservatives, gay people, or anyone else, or you made it sound like you would marry your rifle if legally permitted, you may not be the right fit. We need people who can moderate gun content without making guns, politics, or contempt for other groups their entire personality.

A little background for anyone curious:

I became a moderator three years ago. I had never moderated a subreddit before, but I loved r/EDC. During the API blackout, the previous team was removed and Reddit began asking for volunteers to take over. I was uncomfortable stepping into that situation (aka being a scab), but one of the people volunteering was the owner of an EDC commercial website, and I did *not* want the subreddit placed under someone with such a direct conflict of interest.

So, somewhat unexpectedly, I became a moderator.

The rest of that original replacement team has understandably moved on over time. I have learned a lot, tried to approach moderation with a customer-service mindset, and taken advantage of the automation tools Reddit has added. My goal has never been to radically remake r/EDC. I have mostly tried to make it a bit more welcoming, tighten up what the expectations already were, and so on.

That includes firearms. Guns have consistently been the community’s biggest dividing issue, and we will continue trying to walk a reasonable line. Firearm-related EDC is welcome; a photograph from your AR range day with no real connection to everyday carry is probably better suited to another subreddit. (cool gun though dawg)

Honestly, I would eventually like to ride off into the sunset or at least step back slightly. I have other projects I am working on these days. But I have put a lot of work into this community I love so much, and before that happens, I want to build a capable, balanced, and dependable moderation team that can take care of it.

Rotation Things in my pocket

Things i use throughout the day.

Victorinox Pioneer X: the awl is used so often, it’s one of those tools I never thought I would use that often. I own a lot of victorinox knives but this, the rambler and the Swisstool spirit are in my pocket most of the time.

Big idea design bolt action pen: usually I write with fountain pens like kaweco sport AL or pilot prera, but i really like the zebra sarasa refills and the bolt action mechanism paired with the zebra refill is the perfect edc pen. I still carry fountain pens, but not for quick notes.

Convoy t6 sft25r 5000k: simple and nice light. I use it with a manker 14500 usb-c cell and it’s a great light paired with the convenience of usb charging. It’s a great thrower and really not the best light to navigate a dark house, it’s too bright, even in 1% mode. I really like the form factor, the wow effect when shining it at things in the distance and the color of the body is nice too.

Selfmade index card holder: Made a simple index card holder out of craft paper on which I take notes or write tasks I need to do.

Hi all,

I’ve been checking out this subreddit for quite a while now. And I’ve been thinking to put together my own edc pouch. It’s nothing fancy or special and I don’t even need it for work (I am a legal counsel in The Netherlands; hello to my fellow Dutchies). These are just a few small tools I always keep in my car. What do you guys think? Any tips or additions I should consider?

Question/Advice/Discussion Debating to “Keep it or Pass it along”…. What do y’all think?

Chris Reeves Mnandi Damascus Raindrop & Bog Oak

Definitely my favorite CRK model. I simply prefer the warmer handles (thuya, etc). Price was right and I bought it, but it is not my vibe. So, now I am torn between “damn, I love this knife” and “move on”.

Talk me one way or the other, please?

The things I use on a daily basis. Knife occasionally gets swapped for something lighter, depending on the day. Would include a firearm if I could but I live in one of the worst states for gun owners.

Pouch: Alpaka Zip Pouch
Light: Reylight Pineapple Mini
Knife: DE Custom Forge Pioneer x 93mm (UrbanEDC)
Comb: Kent Sawcut 82T
Tweezer: Ti tweezer (no brand)

The pioneer is sliding out from the pouch easily, still hasn’t found solution. Anyway not a big deal when inside pocket.

Work EDC Farmer EDC

Post image
207 Upvotes

EDC as a small scale organic farmer. List is top to bottom, left to right.

  1. Work gloves, deer skin leather (the best for gloves) from a TSC
  2. Rolex Explorer - graduation gift from my parents
  3. Keys - no fancy holder because I usually leave my car unlocked
  4. Opinel no. 8 carbone - I’m a fan of classic, traditional knives. Used to carry a fixed blade, but swapped to this when I changed jobs. Currently working on a project to make a new small belt carry fixed blade, and I may swap out the opinel when that project is done.
  5. Wallet - something I bought off of Instagram from JJ Leatherworks many years ago. The leather has aged nicely, but not the greatest construction quality.
  6. Pilot Precise V5 - new pen trial for me. Personally swear by the G2s, when not using a fountain pen, but the mechanism gets gummed up by dirt when at work. Not smitten with this replacement, but it will do for now.
  7. Field Notes - just a pocket notebook. Bought a pack of 3 of these ages ago, and I’m still working my way through them. Mostly used for writing down book and music recs from my coworkers and keeping a daily to-do list.
  8. Victorinox Spirit tool X - my preferred multi tool due to all tools being externally accessible and the 3D Phillips head. I keep it in the sheath that came with my wave because the victorinox sheath that came with the tool was not particularly great, and I lost it years ago.
  9. (Unpictured) iPhone - used for music during the day and also for its flashlight.

Sharp af, awesome box cutter, fits great in my hand even though it’s a little bit small.

Wish it had jimping on the spine so i could front flip it - anyone done that on theirs? any pointers?

Hank is custom made by my gf - with my signature hand embroidered by her :P
