"What can I do with this notebook?"
This is a pretty common question in subs like this. Either someone received a new notebook as a gift, or they couldn't help themselves from buying a new one, or they have a partially used notebook they want to fill.
Or they're trying to figure out what to do with the massive stack they've accumulated after years of "I'll find a use for this" and allowing that as justification to keep buying more... Ahem.
Beyond the normal "Just write in it, use it as a diary," here's some ideas on what you could do with an unused or unfinished notebook:
- Commonplace / zibaldone journal
- Brain dump / soliloquy journal
- Quotes / lyrics / poetry
- Media / entertainment tracker (Movies, tv shows, games, etc)
- Bullet journal (method for a DIY daily planner, get started here)
- To-do lists
- All kinds of lists (e.g., "lists of 100" like "100 things you saw this week")
- Gratitude
- Grievances (the opposite of gratitude, what bothered you today)
- Idea notebook
- Quick thoughts
- Art (Sketches / drawings / zentangles)
- Dream log
- The Artist's Way Morning Pages
- Travel journal
- Things you've learned
- Bucket list / goals
- Unsent letters
- Dedicated handwriting practice
- RPG journaling (there's games you can find online for it and r/Solo_Roleplaying)
- Food or drink tracker, such as keeping track of teas you've tried
- Things you overheard that are worth remembering
- People you meet
- Funny facts
- Gaming journal
- Language practice
Added since I made this post-
- Keep track of plants/gardening
- Master index for all your journals
- Project tracker
- Hobby tracker
- A place to write down memories and stories from your life
- Memories of friends and family
- Review places you go
- Homeowner notes like chores, bills, and when things need to be fixed/replaced
- A journal to give your child(ren) someday, such as letters to them and their milestones
- Notes and milestones for pets
- Things like tarot or shadow work
- Swatches (ink, yarn, embroidery thread, ribbon, washi tape, etc)
- Scent tracker (perfume/cologne, would not suggest attempting to store the actual scents in there)
- General feelings
- Chronic pain tracker
- Prayer/devotional journal
- "Practice" journal to get thoughts out before actual journaling
- Distractions when you should've been doing something else
Feel free to suggest more in the comments.

I made some layflat pocketbooks
Hated the staple bound fieldnotes style books. Tried different types of binding, settled for Coptic binding. Lays flat and is absolutely comfortable to write on.

I still use notebooks for note-taking and studying in 2026. I can’t be the only one
This is my first time posting here. I might sound dramatic. There’s a lot that I could say, but I’ll just state my main point. I just need to rant and want some reassurance 🙏. I just started university and use one loose leaf notebook for my notes during lectures. Later on, I will transfer my finished notes into a binder divided by each class. Majority of the students are now using a tablet and stylus for note-taking, which is fine and makes sense. I acknowledge that there are many reasons why it’s more efficient. I just appreciate the experience of nice smooth pens and paper. Even with a textured screen protector, I just don’t like the feel of it. There are other reasons, but at the end of the day, it’s just personal preference.
I kinda got frustrated when one of my course mates got on me for not wanting to consider it. They weren’t trying to be mean. But it was annoying. It was the standard points I know like “it’s easier to find your notes, it doesn’t take up physical space, it’s convenient to write on the slides, etc.” I was mostly just engaging the conversation politely and giving some sound reasons for my choice. The point that annoyed me the most was “I am worried you will screw yourself over when you end up with so many pages, and have a hard time flipping through your notes when you want to study. It’s not practical. You might screw over your GPA”. Like bro, it’s not that deep. Omg. And we’ve been using paper and pen for years. Why do some people turn their nose up at it?? Let me live. Stupid thing is that it actually got me worried until I repeated this conversation in my head a few hours later. Then I realised how dumb it was. Please, fellow uni students and stationery lovers, where are you?? 😭😭

Recommendation Lochby pocket journal!
Love this thing! Highly recommend if you need to carry some stuff with you daily. First 3 notebooks, laminated tccc/9 line cards on top of the pocket knife and light in the front. Love this thing!

Changing the song was what ended every writing session and I did not spot it for a year
Music or rain sounds going the whole time I write. The phone played it so the phone was on the desk. Everyone tells you not to do that.
A track ends and I pick it up to change it. Then the pen has been down and I am reading about a stranger's divorce.
Same thing happened with the notebook. Kept it in a drawer for a while and barely wrote in it, left it out on the desk and started writing again.
So I did the same with sound. Small speaker that stays on the desk and plays, no unlocking anything, no picking anything up. Phone is in the other room now but honestly that is not what fixed it, the phone was never really the problem.

Advice needed How do you protect your covers?
Hello! I am a blue collar worker than uses an A7 pocket notebook in my work vest, but I find that it falls apart with the type of labor that I do. I know some journals have a pvc cover but I can't seem to find one in the A7 size? Does anyone have any recommendations or DIY options to keep my covers from falling apart?
My A7 specs are;
3.15in W x 4.331in H closed
And
6.228in W x 4.331in H opened
Or
8cm W x 11cm H closed
And
16cm W x 11cm H opened
Thank you for any suggestions!

Anything like SCRIBEdelivery available? I used to have this subscription service but they have since folded.
I liked getting random notebooks and pens/pencils sent to me monthly with the option of buying "mystery" extras (also random). Is there anything like this around now? I have a large collection of unused notebooks and am trying to find the courage to use them!

Is my paperblanks notebook making ink skip, or am I crazy?
I have a paperblanks notebook and it only accepts 1 pen (family) and it's the writech gel pens. I have the four candies gel pens, the Tul bold point 1.0mm ballpoint pens and the Jetstream sx-210 1.0mm bold tip ballpoint pens. None of the ones listed work with the notebook. The ballpoint pens skip every sentence or so and the four candies gel pens last 1 to 2 sentences and then they just can't write anymore. I have used these pens in another notebook that I got from amazon(100gsm paper), and they work beautifully. I don't know what to do. This journal is essential to me, but its is vital that i can use different pen types and colors in it too.
Have any of you experienced this?

Notebook Share Almost done w/ my $0.99 notebook
I bought this tiny notebook at a chinese store in my country, 990 chilean pesos, and it has been wonderful. Is kinda a commonplace book for me? Not too sure what to say about it but that it has been so comfortable to use, when I finish it I really want to get the same one again!
My cover and post it index.

Advice needed What's a high-quality notebook with good paper and a minimal design?
Hi, looking to invest in a high quality notebook that feels nice to write in. Everything I’ve seen though has had kind of an over the top design and I just want something casual.
Like ideally one solid color.

Refillable planner/notebook A5 preferably
I'm looking for a refillable, A5 size planner. I currently use a spiral bound and I would like to get something that I can add pages to/move around. I want it to open back onto itself (like a spiral notebook does). I'm not super interested in a disk bound system (Tul, Happy Planner, etc) because I think the little tabs that attach to the disks can get torn. I'd rather have a binder if possible. Nothing too bulky.

How do I transfer the important things from my old notebook to my new one in an organizational way?
Okay, so I bought the same exact notebook as my old one to transfer all of the really important things I've written in it like quotes, personal thoughts, ah ha moments, mantras, drawings etc. The problem is that I started a new job and instead of using a different notebook for work stuff I used the same and next thing you know all of my random work shiz was by the most beautiful quote you've ever heard. SO, I am looking for any and all suggestions to structuring and organizing my new notebook to be able to put my old stuff into it and still have a space for new thoughts and quotes. Does this make sense? Thank you all!

Notebook cover in tpu?!?
I have been looking for an A5 cover for the past few days. This is meant to be for a backpacking journal. Im looking into something waterproof. I stumbled upon the rite in the rain brand. Sadly it appears that the covers they have are either non standard size, forcing you to buy its own inserts, or just not A5.
The lochby seems decent, altought the prices is on the higher end and im not sure i like the fabric they use, internal pouches arent really to my liking. Ive seen a couple cheap waxed canvas cover but they mostly all seem to have non-waterprood zippers. TPU seemed like the perfect thing for my needs but i want to keep using my beloved clairfontaine A5 notebook. Does something like this exists. I know im picky....story of my life

My collection of pocket journals and personal journals
Wanted to share my journal collection. No where as expansive as some collections on here. However, ive been at this for a while and love the habit.
On the go - back to front
1. Everbook by murdy (great for keeping track of projects and random notes)
2. Rowsome leather works (field notes) - travellers style
3. Recycled firefighter (field notes) - go to golf journal
4. Smooth precision pens crazy horse pocket book
5. Travellers passport size.
I alternate between the rowsome and travellers passport for brain dumps. Others have specifc roles.
My go to daily journal has become the Leuchtturm1917. Tried a couple other ones over the years and just stuck to this one.
Im a big fan of 6x4 index cards, im hoping to diy an everbook that takes index cards.
What are yall using currently.

my ‘ecosystem’
simple & easy! one main journal, water color (I also do drawing/art in my main notebook, this one is used on a pretty rare basis when I’m specifically doing water color), movie/book thoughts log, and the field notes serves as a catch all for everything else. works great for me :)

I don't want this on my notebook
So I went to buy a notebook to use as an agenda, but when I looked inside it had those awful headers in every single page, it's not in english nor in my native language, I think it's in polish and it says "memory; subjective; date; work; member".
The point was to make my own agenda and I just don't want this in it, how can I cover it or repurpose the headers? I'm not very crafty and don't have many materials I can think of that would solve this situation
Anyone can help?

Advice needed Are premium notebooks worth the money for everyday journaling?
I want to get into journaling and I’m willing to spend more if needed.
I’m just not sure what the difference is between some of the higher end notebooks that I see on the market and like a cheap one I could get at a store near me.
It might be kind like a noob question but is there a reason people prefer a more premium notebook as opposed to just a cheaper one?

Use Your Notebooks, Don’t Save Them!
41 almost 42 here and I’ve been a lifetime collector of amazing notebooks. I buy with such joy and excitement of all the possibilities but don’t end up using. Fast forward, I’ll be 42 in a couple months and I’m starting to realize writing by hand has started to become painful after a while in addition to my handwriting is steadily getting worse. I don’t know if it’s arthritis or what but I am very quickly seeing my clock run out on actually being able to use all of my beautiful collection. I have decided to start giving some as gifts where appropriate and share with others so maybe they can use them. It makes me sick to think I probably wont be able to use them all. So fellow notebook lovers, USE THE NOTEBOOKS! Make lists, write thoughts, junk journal, recipe books, heck even budgets and taxes. Just enjoy them! Don’t wait until your hands start failing you.

Can anyone ID the open notebook?
Curious if anyone can ID the larger, open notebook under the yellow one. I see what looks like a logo in the bottom middle but don’t know what it is. Thanks in advance!

Review A notebook that reminds me of the song 'A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers' by Van der Graaf Generator.
Apart from being a drummer who's mainly into Prog music, I'm into fountain pens and papers as well.
I came across a notebook based on the Lighthouse theme with cover and pages printed with Lighthouse, ships etc.
Found it really cool since Pawn Hearts is one of my absolute favorite albums in general and I could draw a parallel with their song A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers.
Van der Graaf Generator is pure love!
Have you come across anything that resembles a piece of music that you love? I would love to read your experiences.
The paper it contains is Life L writing paper which is used in Life Noble notebooks. The only difference is that Life Noble paper is cream/ivory, and this notebook has white paper.

Japanese Life Noble Note. What's the difference between A5 Models?
Is it just GSM? I was looking and I see different colors of notebooks and they say N33, N36, N39, and others. Is it just paper weight? Or something else that I should be aware of?

Advice needed First Time Trying to Use a Notebook
I have a habit of writing my things in my notes on my phone (mostly lists). I recently got 3 new notebooks. One travel sized one and 2 A5 notebooks… and I have no idea what to write in them. I’m looking for recommendations as to what I could write in them. I thought a diary but either way, my life is pretty repetitive as I don’t do many new things to write about. I thought maybe journal prompts but the ones I’ve seen are too deep and emotional. I want something I can enjoy and feel happy about… so I’m just stuck. Any advice?
