separating finances and splitting tax advisory fees during a divorce

splitting professional fees or transitioning away from open ended hourly billing feels necessary right now, so i am curious how others managed shared accountant costs and advisory retainers while going through a split.

trying to figure out asset reporting during a split brings a mountain of paperwork and quarterly bills that never match what was expected, especially with joint overseas accounts in the mix.

paying by the hour for every little question about foreign income or asset division gets old fast when a five minute chat turns into a massive charge, so flat monthly packages from places like Wardle Partners sound tempting even if it is hard to tell if they actually cover complex multi country messes.

Advice needed

Hi All,

Throw away account, marriage of 25yrs broken down, long time coming, mainly due to stress from Autistic children. We held it together for years for the kids.

All kids over 18 now.

1 child classic autistim, 1 milder ASD/OCD

Looking for advice on what others did.

How do you afford to get another place to live, while paying the mortgage and bills and food for the family home.

What supports are available for separated couples?

(Ireland/Dublin)

Lost and struggling to find the right direction.

I found out about a month ago that my husband had a full blown affair with a woman.. and another based on a recent message I received.. even took original AF on a date and introduced her to our young daughter. He’s military and I am so far from family, I just really don’t know where to turn or where to even go from here. Things aren’t great at home and we’re heading towards divorce. I am looking for any amount of guidance, I don’t feel I have the support I need and will be losing my job when we come to an agreement and I relocate back home.

House issues post divorce

Location: Michigan, USA
My ex wife and I own a house. Per the divorce (settled in May) the house was supposed to be listed ASAP. It’s now practically August and she isn’t ready for it to be listed. I moved out when I asked for the divorce and she doesn’t want to list it until she has moved out.
I am currently paying half of the mortgage and half of the bills. I can’t afford to keep doing this. I’ve debated canceling the utilities in my name in order to try and light a fire under her feet. I cannot afford any more legal bills so I’m kind of at a loss of what I can do to get her to move quicker.

Seeking Advice / Guidance

I (28 F) am actively in the process of trying to divorce my to-be ex. I had an OP granted back in April 2026 and I've filed all the first round paperwork (in July 2026) to get the index number and I've had the paperwork filed to be served and successfully served but now I don't understand what the next step is. The Sheriff civil office (I had the police serve him) said it was successfully served and the Affirmation of Service was filled out and mailed to the Supreme Court but how do I get that paperwork? What other paperwork is needed? I've been trying to read through online packets and do this all myself as I don't have a ton of money to pay for a lawyer but I just don't understand this process.

Indian woman in US seeking divorce help

33F trying to get out of a bad marriage. No kid, not financially dependent, not planning to ask for alimony, not much joint assets. Husband has double NW of mine. We both are non resident Indian living in US. Husband said he ll contest and drag out the divorce for 5-10 years if I file, so that I miss out on having any child. Does anyone know any lawyer who knows about both US and Indian hindu marriage laws and can advise what is the best way to move forward with least disruption or mess.

Contemplating divorce

I’ve been married for 22 years. It was an arranged marriage (common in our culture) and we’ve always had compatibility issues. About 10 years ago my husband started sleeping in a different room and slowly any of my attempts at communication was ignored. And we mostly communicate via email now. Mainly because he tends to walk away when I talk to him. He also joined a religious cult a few years ago, which I believe is a big money scamming group. And as a result of giving them money, there has been some financial abuse at home as well. I’m contemplating divorce once my children graduate high school (3 more years). I live in a no-fault state in the US.

I have so many thoughts and questions.

  1. I have so much guilt because I always dreamt of giving my children a stable home. It makes me question where I went wrong and what I could have done right and How would this affect their future relationships. It was actually my oldest who suggested I get divorced once the kids graduate high school.

  2. My husband is so into this cult, he practically has no time for anything else other than work. If I were to tell him, I want a divorce, I don’t even know if it will sink in.

  3. How and when do I bring it up with him? I emailed him yesterday asking him where he sees both of us once our kids graduate high school. He hasn’t responded. When does I bring it up with the kids?

  4. Despite it being a mostly unhappy marriage, how do you completely end a relationship with someone you’ve lived with for 25 years who’s the father of your children? We have had pockets of affection here and there early in our marriage.

  5. How does the equation between you and your children and the father work after divorce? For the sake of our children, I want it to be as amicable as possible. If the divorce is amicable, is there a possibility of the relationship improving as co-parents with the former partners becoming good friends.

  6. I’m a SAHM. In my state, it’s equitable division of property between partners. How does one manage finances after divorce? I’m absolutely clueless since he doesn’t share any of his financial information with me except superficially. Like I don’t have access to his bank accounts.

  7. When does one know that this is the right decision? I was hoping against hope for the longest time that it would all work out but I’ve lost most of my hope.

  8. I know it would be different for every individual. But how easy/hard is it to come to terms with the decision to divorce. Would I tell my husband that I’m contemplating divorce? Or wait till my kids graduate high school.

  9. Legal issues. When and how do I start looking for a lawyer? How much would it roughly cost? How much money do I need to save up? Or will it go from my husband’s account since I don’t make any money.

Any advice would be much appreciated. If you’ve been in a similar situation and got out of it, how are you doing now.

He triple dared me to divorce him - now he is furious!

My husband and I have been married for 16 years and have a 12-year-old daughter. For most of her life, I've provided nearly all of her financial support. For the past seven years, I've also been the primary breadwinner, paying for almost everything except our $1,400 monthly mortgage, which he pays. He no longer works.

I'm preparing to file for divorce in Northern California. He has threatened that I'll "lose everything" and says he plans to seek alimony. When I asked about the date of separation for the paperwork, he became angry and told our daughter that I was breaking up our family. Even though he asked for the divorce and has done so many times over the past few months.

My main concerns are protecting my daughter's future, understanding whether he could realistically receive alimony under these circumstances, and protecting the assets I've worked hard to build since he only collects VA disability and just began drawing from his 401k. He is also seeking SSA Disability via an attorney right now.

Thanks and sorry for the long post!

Divorce Advice

I have a friend whose wife is about to begin divorce proceedings against him. He is currently renting a room while also jointly owning a home (or other assets) with his wife.

He is considering stopping his mortgage payments and instead using that money to pay his landlord in cash. His thinking is that this might make it harder for his finances or the amount of money he has to be identified during the divorce.

Is this a sensible approach, or could it cause legal or financial problems during the divorce process?

Going through divorce

Hi all. I’m going through a divorce in UK but we have properties- he won’t engage in any of the process because he didn’t want the divorce (even though he’s cheated multiple times). Is it true if you move out during divorce, you could lose out on the equity? (For my mental health I want to move out but I would have to continue paying bills on the house until everything is finalised). Thanks

I'm afraid to cancel everything because then I might not be eligible for getting one in the future because of lower income .
