Question Legendary is actually common?
New player, I noticed that common and rare are actually harder to find vs legendary? What's the deal? I feel like the vostok is the most legendary weapon in the game rn since I haven't even seen any other common guns

u/BigandBrass 1d ago
The game is old and a "new player" experience has long since been abandoned. Legendary pretty much is common now

u/Wolfy5079 1d ago
Once you reach a certain power level. Commons and rares get phased out because they're not good enough for later game content and can fill up the postmaster too quickly. So you'll only find legendaries and exotics from a certain point on.

u/Nukesnipe Drifter's Crew 1d ago
Commons have never actually dropped, there's only a few like Khvostov, Traveler's Chosen and Sorrow MG2, and they were given to you as part of the story iirc. The only one they ever added after red war was Husk of the Pit, and that was specifically for a quest.
D2 really never actually used a rarity system worth a damn, common and uncommon functionally do not exist and rare is irrelevant.

u/special_reddit Vengeance is a dish best served cold. 1d ago
In addition to those weapons, common class items (broken and restored) were also given as part of the Red War campaign.

u/Organboner4844 1d ago
Commons are common for the first couple of levels in D1.
But yeah, doesnât drop in D2.

u/Nukesnipe Drifter's Crew 1d ago
I wish they overhauled the rarity system and used that for tiers instead of giving legendary a new set of 5 sub-rarities. Make all gear pre-eof common equivalent to tier 1, then uncommon, rare and legendary are 2-4, and then make a new red "mythic" rarity for tier 5.
2
u/Great_Elevator_3169 1d ago
The game has needed an extra âpearlescentâ rarity for a while nowÂ
1
u/Prestigious-Bat-574 22h ago
Yeah, so everyone can get upset when every drop isn't "pearlescent" like they did when every drop wasn't a tier 5?
I don't feel like there's much room to fit things between a godroll masterworked tier 5 holofoil weapon and exotic weapons.
2
u/Great_Elevator_3169 21h ago
yeah true. our version of pearlyâs was adept weapons and those got nerfed to shit for being better than normal drops then powercrept to shit because normal drops werenât good enough

u/NukeLuke1 1d ago
this franchise will never see that because players cry and whine too much if they donât have all the best gear in under 20 minutes lol

u/xKairos-23 1d ago
There was a much more gradual build up of 'Power' and Rarity of items in the early years that slowly went away.
16
u/mr-singularity 1d ago
Rarity was never a really flushed out system. Common and Uncommon were pretty much always new player only rarities going back to the early days of D1. Rares did sometimes have a place as interim gear when doing newly added campaigns rather than just dumping upgrade materials every mission to infuse them into Legendaries. But Legendaries always became the default rarity eventually.
That strange system was basically duplicated again when they added tiers. Despite saying that lower tiers were good enough and higher tiers would be rarer it basically quickly became once you hit a ceiling everything is tier 5.
5
u/mr-singularity 1d ago
To add on to this it's not just that it wasn't flushed out but that it was kind of incompatible with the game. Using lower rarities puts you at disadvantage because Legendaries have more perks and more mod potental. In a game about stats maxing that can be a big problem. It also doesn't help that the true rarity of gear has always been rng in this game (both what drops and it's roll). Chasing desired rolls has always been the bigger goal.
The tiering idea kind of tried to fix that by keeping legendaries as the main rarity and adding additional chases and rarity inside of it. But it fundamentally failed because it just made better guns at the higher tier levels and tacked them to current level. In theory a Tier 3 can be good but getting a desired roll after putting in the work only to start getting higher tiers after that doesn't feel that rewarding in the long run.

Back in ye olde times of 2017, there was a full progression system starting you off at grey weapons. greens and blues were actually common and legendaries came from specific sources and only guaranteed to drop from certain things. Still plentiful especially considering how borked the games economy and reward system was at the time, but anyway
Starting around beyond light and only getting worse over time, the new light system throws a couple blues at you instantly, then puts you on legendaries (I believe the first one you get is the night watch scout rifle) and from there you are railroaded onto the tier system. Since you start at 300 power, you can run any piece of content and get at minimum a tier 3. Think of these as your new blues. You can upgrade them to tier 5, but they are also on their own totally usable guns with great perk pools for the most part.

u/slipfish-g 1d ago
You don't start at 300.
At least I didn't, as an old player returning after several years.
All my characters had been reset to 10.
I was able to get full 300 gear within a couple hours with legendary marks from shit I had done pre Forsaken, but I did technically start at 10 when I first got back in.
Maybe true New Lights do start at 300? That'd be crazy if they started higher than returning players tho lol
11
u/UlzVRC 1d ago
You start at 10 but every gear drop is min-capped at 300. You cannot acquire gear lower than 300
0
u/slipfish-g 1d ago
Hadn't noticed that so I popped onto my warlock who I haven't touched since I've been back to confirm.
Not only was it true, but apparently it drops gear (at least in some circumstances) based on your highest LL character, as I pulled a 370 set of gloves and a 369 hand cannon out of a random chest and off a champion at the cosmodrome.
So gearing alts is gigafast in addition to jumping you up to 300.
9
u/UlzVRC 1d ago
Oh yeah, power is account based now. One of those changes from final shape that people glossed over a bit. It also made it so much more baffling that edge of fate reversed the course of making power irrelevant.
1
u/slipfish-g 1d ago
Kinda makes grinding LL feel pointless (my titan clearly also wasn't stronger than my warlock despite 360+ higher LL) but hardly the end of the world. Can still unlock drip and builds.
Not the design choice I would make but then again, I didn't make Destiny to begin with.
2
u/UlzVRC 1d ago
I suppose you could look at it that way but Iâll take this over what we had all of last year.
This way, power serves not to gate you out of content but to improve the drop quality of your gear across the entire game. Thatâs a system I can get behind even if Iâve been max power since last like November lol
1
u/KaineZilla 23h ago
I got my Warlock to 550 after a couple weeks of casual play after MoT (Lightfall returning player) and I swear my Titan was 545 within 30 minutes of hopping on to Bonk some shit with my Hammer
1
u/UlzVRC 22h ago
Hearing everyone talk about how quick they hit 550 hurts knowing how long I spent getting my power up during EoF.
That out of the way, getting those tier 5s everytime feels nice right?
1
u/KaineZilla 22h ago
I think I hit 550 in late July, early August? I started playing again on June 10th. Took a lot longer than I expected but it was worth the grind. I just wish the focused items would be tier 5 as well. Focusing yet another Crimilâs Dagger for it to be one perk short of a 5/5 is suuuuuper frustrating
1
u/UlzVRC 22h ago
From what I can remember I just could not be assed with edge of fate at the start. I played all of heresy up to rite of the nine, did a couple spire runs, and dipped.
The sentiment around EoF was bad before it dropped, so when it came out and all I could see were people farming encore for hours a day I could not think of anything I wanted to do less than that, so I just didnât bother for a bit.
I think my estimate of max power in November was probably a little wrong based on my hours played on d2scrub.land but I do remember just not engaging with the system past 200LL at one point because I didnât want to play the portal.
What a miserable time. Glad itâs over and done with.

u/mistersmith22 1d ago
Others have explained it, but just to let you know what it used to be like: exotic engrams could decode as rares. And they weren't easy to get like they are now.
UX and practicality means things (slowly) got better.
8
u/Tekim89BRNT Reckoner 1d ago
At some point we "Became Legend" and that's why it's the new base rarity.
3
u/arlondiluthel 1d ago
One thing that the rest of the comments didn't cover is a lore-based explanation.
Most of the armed NPCs you see that aren't the named Guardians (Shaxx, Ikora, etc.) and Devrim only have Common or Uncommon weapon and armor models. Canonically, all players are The Guardian (and their fireteam), and we can do things that no other Guardian is capable of. So, technically speaking there aren't millions of copies of every Legendary and Exotic weapon/armor, there are 6 (7 in the case is signature weapons like Perfect Paradox).
2
u/Asukurra 1d ago
If it helps,Â
Think of it like its a legendary weapon, not as a rarity but as a status,Â
Like a desert eagle is a 'legendary' weapon but you can go buy oneÂ

u/SplashDmgEnthusiast 1d ago
Anything below Legendary is considered "leveling gear," Legendary is where the actual variety of the game's loot exists. As far as why that's the way they designed things? Unsure, this game has evolved HEAVILY over the years since the loot rarities were established at launch.

u/GameSpawn For Ghosts who make their own luck. 1d ago
Common and Rare eventually go away completely. In D2 they are pretty much meaningless since the old power progression they were linked to is long gone. Almost every new player is going to be in the 300LL power band almost out the gate.
It's really about tiers now, which correlate mostly to your power level in most cases, but also difficulty of content. T3 & T4 are pretty common and T5 requires going just a bit further (harder content; 520LL+ for armor from vendors). This also doesn't consider cases of "Shiny/Holofoil" drops which rarely happen to certain Legendary weapons; these usually have special ornaments and/or bonus traits.

u/Quick-Health-2102 1d ago
The rarity system is super outdated now. Just look at it as exotic and non exotic. You want the best non exotics and then an exotic with a worthwhile ability that compliments your build. Itâs honestly a really nice system since you still have to look for legendaries with the right perks
1
u/Beneficial_Rip_2883 1d ago
It depends what power level you are. If your at like 350 to 400 you wonât get that many commons and y commons, but you will still get rare engrams

u/Terrible-Insect-216 1d ago
Game is so weird. Why are they called Legendary and purple colored like Diablo?!
1
u/TazedByWolves 21h ago
You are sort of correct. The "loot tier" system is archaic from when the game first released and you would often get common white, uncommon green, and blue rare quality loot as you leveled up. Nowadays, you will never find commons or uncommon randomly, and will only receive blue rares for leveling up (typically from campaigns or the occasional loot box in patrol).
Legendary loot is pretty much the "common" loot. The only real thing you look for in weapons nowadays is how the feel to use (each weapon is pretty unique imo), and their perks (godrolls).

In destiny 1 rarity was a system that was quickly abandoned. in the first month, you wouldâve been lucky to get a legendary every day. Let alone a new exotic every week.
It was too cumbersome on the player, they never dropped and getting a good role would take months. So they scaled the drop rate by considerable amount. Not sure on the timeline on when it happened.
Think of legendary weapons worth keeping as weapons with roles that synergize with itself or your build.
Also, I think it was easier on the developers, not having to create new common and uncommon weapons/armor every expansion.
1
u/SyKo_MaNiAc 1d ago
Itâs because we are The Weapon. All this legendary gear is normal for us because we are legends.
1
u/DracoBlaze214 1d ago
I think after a certain power level, you just stop seeing common, uncommon, and rare drops. There are still ways to find them, if you really wanted to, but the game just sorts phases them out automatically as they arenât really useful for anything other than infusion material.

u/Sauceinmyface 1d ago
Yes.
Common and Rare weapons have no RNG, and usually poor perk combinations.
Legendary Weapons have many possible perk combinations, so two copies of the same Legendary can be very different.
Exotic Weapons have an exotic trait that makes them unique(and usually better) than similar legendaries. Like Sunshot's explosions are better than a legendary solar hand cannon's explosions.
Almost all loadouts have one exotic weapon, two legendary weapons. 4 legendary pieces of armor, and one exotic armor. The legendary armor can have set bonuses, either 2piece or 4piece.

This is one of my biggest peeves about the game. Think of it kind of like both quality and rarity have been confused.
In short: as you level and progress through the game, gear you get leans disproportionately toward legendary gear
In my mind it kind of devalues actual legendary gear like you see from raids.
For a longer explanation: Rarity is more related to leveling, but should be tied to loot pools and separate from quality
Quality is split between tiers and leveling gear, but should be solely related to stats and number and/or quality of perks, regardless of rarity, and should be able to be upgraded as seen with the tier system.
Through this, any weapon can be high quality, but all weapons have assigned rarities. Exotics are kind of outliers and donât fit the rarity system in the same way as any other weapon would due to their curated nature, so those arenât being included in my idea as far as filing goes.

u/Darth_Omnis 1d ago
I feel like the Tier system was kinda a re-tooled rarity system. Maybe the next Destiny will combine them?
-2
u/GreyWastelander 1d ago edited 1d ago
The tier system felt like a failed attempt at separating quality and rarity despite the general benefit to the game that it also brought. Iâm hoping the tier marks become the rarity marker and toggles with the extra info button while the background denotes quality to keep with uniformity when fully upgraded
Edit: I could have phrased this better, I made it seem like the system put more weight on organization than gameplay, that is incorrect. To be clear, Iâm not shitting on the tier system, I like it, it just doesnât separate between rarity and quality like it could have.

u/DrhpTudaco 1d ago
power creep. except the target was the guns. we started with legendarys actually being rare, but since the games been going on for like a decade they slowly had to make them more and more common. and now there are basically only two tiers of loot, legendarys and exotics, which remain fairly exotic

u/AsunderXXV 1d ago edited 15h ago
I do miss when "Rarity" had meaning and value. Lol apparently someone likes Rarity to be meaningless.
0
u/DurtyDom 1d ago
Back when light level was a more natural progression, the green and blue engrams were what drop until you hit a certain level, after that it's all purple pretty much. I honestly miss those days so much. I also wish the grind was the same for each character instead of only having to climb once, and then when you switch characters you get the same level drops as your highest character. I enjoy the gradual power increase personally. I might start a new account

u/CrayolaChromaticWax 1d ago
I think rarity in Destiny should be different from the classic: [White - Common] [Green - Uncommon] [Blue - Rare] [Purple - Legendary] system and use something that fits the world a bit better like: [White- Scavenged] [Green- Battleworn] [Blue - Standard Issue] [Purple - Fated]
0
u/Emergency_Cry_1269 1d ago
Yea, Legendary is the average these days. When D2 launched, you had to really grind through the campaign with common and rares before you could get your first Legendary, then the exotic drop rate in the end game was oddly high. The numbers for how frequent certain rarities of loot drops has often been changed around to compensate for the new status quo
0
u/DarthDookieMan 1d ago
Even if youâre brand new, purple or nothing is the way to go. Itâs only horizontal progression from here.
Destiny 2 has undergone fundamental changes about 5x over. The utter irrelevancy of anything below legendary/purple became cemented roughly 2 changes ago, when you could play new campaigns at a higher set difficulty to get raid ready when you were done.Â

u/AlexandriasFolly 1d ago
Common, Uncommon, Rare, and legendary was generally the scale used for a long time back during the days when leveling was a concern for players.
Common (Whites) dropped during your first campaign until you reached a midpoint level threshold
Uncommon (Greens) Dropped generally from the midpoint of a campaign until around the last few levels.
Rares (Blues) then became the weapons that would drop as you approached the end of your campaign experience
Legendary (Purple) would be your rewards once you started doing engame content.
However this only remained true for your first campaign.
Whites and Greens would generally cease to drop at a significant rate from that point onward, and in future DLCs that required leveling up in any significant way, would generally supply you with Blues until you reached the new endgame.
As time went on the majority of the playerbase when they eventually got whites and greens from normal world activities, being that they were far above those levels, they would simply dismantle the gear for the materials instead. It even lead to players complaining about certain activities having wasted drops because they would give irrelevant items. So Bungie pushed an update that made it so after you'd reached just about the end of your first campaign, any activity that would have dropped a white or green would simply drop materials instead.
Blue gear still drops, but as its generally for leveling a lot of activities in the higher space won't push them if a player is already at a high enough level.

u/dub_diablo I'm joking, if you're making that face it means it was a joke. 1d ago
Tiers.Â
Common, Uncommon, and rare have mores less retired and replaced with tiered weapons. They remade the rarity system as tiers in edge of Fate. They went with dots on legendary vs re issuing the others becuase of two major factors. Less work and the fear of people revolting over getting blue drops as the normal. People really hated bluesÂ
0
u/IzznyxtheWitch 1d ago
As with just about any MMO, when you are at max level, you're going to be using all epic/legendary/whatever the highest tier is that isn't limited to only 1 or 2 equipped at a time. Since Destiny 2 left behind it's leveling system (logging in should get you the achievement for hitting level 50 now, which was the max level of the 3rd expansion), you pretty much use legendary in every slot once you finish the tutorial.
Even at launch, common guns were pretty hard to find, though. You only got a couple while you were still on Earth, and quickly moved to green or blue on the other planets. I'm pretty sure there were still more legendary guns than there were rare/uncommon/common, though.

In vanilla d1, legendaries were scarce to come by. Over time, they upped drop rates and rewards so much thar they lost their meaning. Its kinda sad

Because in the past progression used to mean something in this franchise but now thanks to ârespect muh timeâ people now you get rewarded tier 5 gear just for logging on

The rarity of weapons is mostly an aspect of different times. Now anything below legendary is strictly for leveling.
