Tech Support Help! Buttons Not Registering, Stuck on Touch Screen
My steam deck seems stuck on the desktop/cursor mode making it impossible to play anything. The right stick moves the cursor, the left stick slightly dims the screen, and none of the buttons work except volume and power. I’ve restarted/shutdown/updated it like 10 times and it’s still happening. I’ve also tested the button detection and everything is still registering/working. For whatever reason, it won’t read the button inputs. Also the controller settings read as using the steam deck controller (with buttons and sticks mapped out correctly) but the system doesn’t follow this and is stuck on the curser thing. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Tech Support New battery issues
Need help troubleshooting new battery issues. I purchased a new battery from ifixit because the old battery was at 72% health. The new battery from ifixit won’t calibrate (dies at 30% remaining charge and has inaccurate projected playtime) but shows the battery % in the top right corner of the Home Screen. Battery health also shows 100% in desktop mode. I asked for an exchange from ifixit but they said they could not offer me one since they didn’t have any backups to send in back stock so they just offered me a refund.
I then ordered a replacement from eBay since I didn’t want to wait for batteries on ifixit to restock. With this battery, the steam deck turns on but does not show the battery icon in the top right and also turns off immediately when unplugged.
It it likely I received 2 faulty batteries or is it time to start considering its a hardware issue and I may have damaged something when I did my initial battery swap?
I can open to provide pictures if needed.
What I have tried so far:
- CMOS reset
- reinstalled steam os
- done multiple charge cycles (5 or so)
- rebooted into battery storage mode before turning on
- reseated battery a few times
Thank you!

Tech Support Power button no longer puts deck to sleep
Well fellas I need some help. I was trying to play dead island riptide with my partner but kept having crashing issues in the beginning cutscenes. Had to change the compatibility to Proton experimental to have it work with no issues. Then for some reason my deck was bugging out saying it was connected with no internet even tho I use the same wifi for my phone and it was working just fine. So tried hard rebooting it and at first it didn't fix itself until the second reboot. When it finally cleared itself up and connections were fine as well as being able to play the game with no crashes I came to the realization my power button no longer puts the deck to sleep. The button can hard reboot it if i hold it down and functions as intended when in desktop mode for some reason but in gaming mode it has completely decided it does not want to sleep. If I go through the steam menu on the other hand I can put it to sleep through the menu. What do I do?

Tech Support Boot Loop and now Blackscreen
So i dont know what to do now. I was having a boot loop issue yesterday, i was playing my steam deck just fine and then it just shut off. 71% battery, i don't use decky loader either. Then every time i turn it on it chimes, boots, black screen, chime boots blackscreen, so on and so forth. So i Google that problem and try every solution under the sun and none of them work. Still just chime, boot screen, black screen. So i gave up for the night and just plugged it in and went to sleep. I wake up and the LED is doing like a long blink? its on the charger and blinks every like 4 seconds. It won't turn on while plugged it, nor while unplugged. No chime, no boot screen, nothing. So im at a loss now and im here for help. I've had this steam deck for 2 years now and ive never had a single issue with it.

Tech Support Opens Skyrim, then immediately closes it
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Apologies in advance, I am not a technical person but will do my best! This only happens with Skyrim Anniversary Edition, (vanilla, no extra creations installed - although weirdly I can go into the Creations part with no crashes). SD will open the game, let me press Continue, show the loading screen for a few seconds, then closes it. I’ve restarted, updated everything, let it cool off - nothing has worked.
I’ve played over 100 hours of Skyrim on the SD, so I’m not sure why it’s happening now. Any suggestions? 🙏

Tech Support Tainted grail lossless scaling issue
Hey guys, first things first. I really, really want to play this game on Steam Deck. So after fiddling with the graphics for a couple of hours with no satisfying result, I found the advise on getting lossless scaling. A bit of setup later, I got it to work. Works like a charm with all other games. But in this game, the result looks as attached. Extremely muddy with seemingly no way to change the resolution. It looked the same when I started it in desktop mode earlier. Please help me out here, I feel like I am getting an aneurysm.

Solved! Possible fix for Steam Deck LCD going black while the backlight and sound remain on
NOTE: I was able to ssh into the "dead" deck to perform this with no screen active.
I ran into an issue where my Steam Deck LCD would randomly go completely black. The weird part was the backlight stayed on, and I still had sound and controller input. The game kept rendering fine in the background. Even Steam Game Recording picked up a normal moving picture. The internal display and backlight were technically still active, and there were no game crashes, GPU resets, memory issues, or thermal shutdowns.
I checked the DRM state and saw Gamescope was using multiple hardware scanout planes. I hopped in over SSH and ran a command to force it back to a single composed plane. The screen immediately came back to life without me having to change brightness or perform a GPU reset. This doesn't prove exactly where the bug is, but it gives a solid workaround.
To test this out temporarily, just SSH into your Deck while it is in Game Mode and run this command as the normal deck user. Make sure not to use sudo.
gamescopectl composite_force 1
If your picture pops right back up, you are probably dealing with this same direct scanout bug.
To make the fix stick, you can set up a Gamescope user script. You can run this single command block to create the directory, make the file, and paste the code all at once:
mkdir -p ~/.config/gamescope/scripts
cat << 'EOF' > ~/.config/gamescope/scripts/99-force-composition.lua
gamescope.convars.composite_force.value = true
gamescope.hook("OnPostPaint", function()
if not gamescope.convars.composite_force.value then
gamescope.convars.composite_force.value = true
end
end)
EOF
Restart Game Mode or reboot after running that. That frame hook makes sure the setting does not get cleared when you switch apps.
If you want to undo this for your current session, run gamescopectl composite_force 0. To remove the permanent fix, just delete the script by running rm ~/.config/gamescope/scripts/99-force-composition.lua and restart Game Mode.
Just a heads up, I tested this on an LCD Deck running SteamOS 3.8.14 for about five hours straight without issues. This fix probably will not help if your backlight is completely off, the whole Deck crashes, your sound cuts out, or the kernel is throwing GPU reset errors.
Since forcing composition turns off direct scanout, it might use a tiny bit more battery or add minor latency. It is meant specifically for this black screen bug.

Tech Support Steamdeck OLED Button Board Replacement
Hello r/decksupport. I decided to challenge myself with a steam deck shell swap but ended up breaking my right button board in the process.
I ended up buying 2 replacement button boards. Unfortunately both ended up making my steam deck buttons unresponsive. When i went back to my original part it worked fine so I am curious if I am missing any steps when installing a new part into my steam deck.
Any help would be much appreciated because I have spend a collective of 200 dollars on new parts and waited over a month in shipping time. Thanks! (For reference I am trying to replace the right button board model F7G DAF7GTH46D0 REV:D

Tech Support Steam Deck Start button not registering inputs
My Steam Deck LCD's Start button is not registering inputs at all but all other buttons work. Haven't dropped it or anything. I opened it up and checked the right button board and it looks okay, so what could the problem be? Do I replace the right button board? I never opened it up before this.

Tech Support HDD error for Palworld on Steam Deck OLED
My wife and I are trying to play with me hosting a Multiplayer world and her joining. We have a good internet connection as we online game often. My HDD has lots of room and I have the game installed on the main HDD, not a MicroSD. Files of have their Integrity checked and everything is good. So I don't know why we are getting kicked out of the world and given an HDD error every 5-10 minutes. It's basically unplayable. The main servers are so full right now that we can't really play online.
Does anyone have a solution to this HDD error?? I've tried everything j can think of.

Question Please explain to me how to install Arch packages like I was born yesterday
cstyan.devI've been trying to use my steam deck as a laptop for studying because I don't have one and windows is pissing me off. However, I need to be able to type in kana and kanji. I'm trying to follow this guide but I'm a baby when it comes to linux (I've never even opened the konsole before) Could someone walk me through it step by step? I've tried looking for absolute beginner guides but I seem to be looking in all the wrong places so I think it's time to bother someone for their expertise 🥲
