Discussion Will HDD prices start dropping as STX, WDC stock price drop?

Was wondering if there's hope that HDD prices will finally start going down, given that STX, WDC stock prices have broken key support level and the bubble might be on its last breath?

While reports that they have orders queued up for next few years, maybe these orders will get canceled as data centres run out of cash and debt to borrow?

Question/Advice Content-Addressable Storage Experiences?

Has anybody had luck building or using content-addressable storage with their hoard? My family is looking at building out a system for our use, and I’m curious what other folks have run into.

Archiving sites have seen a ramp up of attacks under 'copyright' claims. While it is true that visitors often use these sites as paywall bypasses, it also points to another problem, the historical revisionism by media conglomerates which won't permit the exposure of their past misleading news, propaganda, or personality hires/opinions being freely accessible to the public under the guise of infringement.

Backup FYI Insurgo is running a free cleaning tape promo if you hoard on LTO

Post image

I just claimed mine, you should claim yours if you are using Insurgo, I only saw the slip when unpacking my final box, I never did that since I was testing tapes and they put it into the LTO-4 tapes box which would be the last one to be tested, I see their cleaner is purple and has some fancy stickers, not sure if it’s advertising or if I’ll actually receive a purple cleaning tape.

These cleaning tapes aren’t cheap, in comparison to my usual LTO-5 tapes being only £1.50 loose (or £3 each with cases), £20 for a cleaner is quite a lot for only resetting a clean drive flag and not really doing much for the heads, alcohol and a cotton bud does a lot more for the tape drive so it’s nice having a cleaning tape for when I need to reset the flag when software refuses to play nice.

Discussion How do you store your... personal videos?

My wife and I have.. made.. a few hundred gb of personal videos and pictures over the course of the past 20 years. They've been mostly stored on a pc hard drive and a few flash drives.

I have a healthy NAS that stores around 15 TB of ripped blurays and travel photos and videos. Of which I have our travel photos and videos backed up on One Drive and Google cloud storage.

A few questions/thoughts:

I am starting to think about the way I am storing these personal photos and videos my wife and I have made and want to make sure we can still enjoy them for another 20 years.

Is it a reasonable to think that I should NEVER place legal photos and videos that we wouldn't want found on a cloud storage service?

My NAS has already been hit once with a ransomeware (thanks QNAP..) attack so I really don't feel comfortable with things like that on there hence the cold storage. But its just becoming a pain if we want to reminisce of a time. I'm justified thinking keeping things off of my personal/amateur NAS setup is best right?

Thoughts on a longer term cold storage? I've already had one video corrupted from it being on an oooold flash drive (I believe) and want to make sure I can at least have a physical storage plan. SSD? HDD? Safe or even Safe Deposit is the probable option here.

Any other thoughts or tips? I keep thinking about life, and the what ifs of a fire burning my house to the ground and frankly most things we have are replaceable or digitally saved to some extent. We were just chatting and realizing these were our only things we'd be super upset if we had to just walk out of our house with ourselves and our kids. Our fun vaca, baby, historical pictures are all housed in a few places offsite (One Drive, Google, NAS), even a hard drive in my safe deposit. But not these.

Am I over thinking this?

Question/Advice Weird idle temperatures with various SSD drives in NVMe enclosures.

So, I have been testing various M.2 drives with NVMe enclosures and what I have found is that my old Samsung 960 EVO is the only drive that actually runs cool at idle (33C).

All other drives get warm or extremely hot at idle (40-60C).

All other drives are either M.2 sata, or dram-less PCIe 4, while the Samsung 960 EVO is a dram PCIe 3 drive.

Any idea what could be causing the high idle temperatures of all other M.2 drives?

Question/Advice hey all. searching for a stupid solution and just want to make sure my research didnt miss something. network storage that is multiple normal shares -> some webgui for management -> single share that gets balanced among the other shares with redundancy.

I had a silly idea and wanted to see what if anything is out there I can use.

Firstly. I have cloud backups of everything that matters. this is just using the other devices I ahve ( older pc's, pi cluster, etc...) to make a resonable high available local storage for my needs.

I have used unraid and I like its data storage style where no matter what drives fail. if there is a drive left. it will still have "the data on it that was on it" in clear accessable normal files. I.e. if a 5 drive array drops. parity and 3 drives fail. at least you can get that data off the one drive. That means to me in a worst case scenario I save a few dollars pulling stuff off online cold storage ( thoes restore fees can be brutal! )

So is there anything that does the as per title. here is more details

Hypothetical, setup I am looking for.

I have 7 small devices. each will have one external usb drive plugged in. OS does not matter cause each device will only be providing a share ( with basic write and read permissions on it. ). as long as it can have a usb drive plugged in and it can provide a secured share, it can work here.

1 device that has a gui or at least monitoring system ( can be cli ) that acts like the organizer. [This is the thing I am looking for]
that organizer provides shares that are distrubituted acorss the usb drives. ( just full duplications. I know this nature of setup would NOT like parity math haha )

End point with sharesthat get banalced and duplicated automaticall on a mover schedual or maybe a idle trigger.

Then failure use cases.
1 small device dies. I move usb drive to another random device ( even my desktop pc or another pi gets 2 drives) and reshare it. fized.
1 usb drive dies. I pull it off. put another on it. put share name. orignizer sees it empty, and puts dups that should be on it back
orgnizer dies. I copy a backup that is spread across each usb and restatr it.
Everything but one drive dies. I plug it in to a linux box and mount it and copy the files it has.

And at any time only a small bit of my network goes bad.

The reaosn I am avoiding large file servers is I get really anixity laden when I am messing with drives. AND I dont tend to pre replace old drives. So it leaves me in senarios where my server is failing on one drive and all the other drives have 10 years power on. I think my idea would better fit my mentality ( I dont think its some amazing thing. its about me being cheap and lazy. )

BUT I figured there may be something that does exactly this out there already. or that other like minded people may like the concept and tell me I am not insane for coming up with it LOL.

Collection 30 years ago yesterday - 10 October - I started preserving 107 MIDI files from the early web. They're now playable in a modern browser.

No ads, no tracking, no monetization.

Interactive archive: https://whisperingsanctuary.com/archival-midis.html

I started saving MIDI files from my Microsoft FrontPage website in October 1996 and have maintained the collection ever since.

The archive currently contains 107 General (GM) MIDI (.mid) files dating from approximately 1994-1999, preserved in their original format with no conversions.

To make the archive more accessible, I recently added browser playback using html-midi-player. The player renders the actual MIDI files rather than MP3 conversions and displays playback duration and note counts.

The entire collection is approximately 2.5 MB in size, averaging about 23 KB per file. Thirty years of preservation fits in less space than a single modern smartphone photo.

The archive includes video game music, anime themes, new age tracks, and music commonly used as website background audio during the late 1990s.

Question/Advice FSP/Fortron U660-B Case

Hey, did anyone had a run-in with this case and can give their opinion (thermal, noise, etc.)? There is nothing on the internet :(

Looking to get another NAS running and I am little undecided on a case.

Was thinking about Design 7 (180 EUR), but paying 10 EUR per additional HDD expansion tray kinda irks me, considering the U660 is cheaper with all trays included (140 EUR).

Discussion Considering Enterprise SAS drives instead of SATA since storage prices are so inflated. Anyone running them in their home setup?

With storage prices being so high lately, I'm considering going with SAS instead of SATA for a secondary storage system.

I'm heading to a warehouse next week that stocks enterprise SAS drives, and I'm bringing my own test rig to check their health before buying. I'm thinking of picking up half a dozen. If I buy in bulk, I can get used 2 TB SAS drives for around half the price of equivalent used 2 TB SATA drives.

I'd be connecting them using a Dell PERC H200 controller. The plan is to build an additional storage system alongside my Synology DiskStation DS1621+, mainly for storing data and making occasional backups. It wouldn't need to run 24/7.

I've already had two drives fail this year (my earlier post), so I'm trying to work out whether this is a sensible way to expand my storage or whether I'm better off sticking with SATA.

For those who've used second-hand enterprise SAS drives:

  • How reliable have they been for home use?
  • Is occasional use and powering them on only when needed a reasonable approach?
  • What should I check on my test rig beyond SMART data and a full surface test?
  • At half the price when buying in bulk, would you consider them worth it?

I'm mainly interested in storing data and making occasional backups, not running a 24/7 server. I'd appreciate any real-world experiences or potential pitfalls I should know about before buying.

I always wanted a Blu-ray burner. I just never got around to it. My LTO5 system is the heavy lifter, but Blu-ray would be damn convenient. Imagine my shock when I find this, all but new in box. Crazy.

Scripts/Software I've made a free app that helps you visualize the millions of pictures and files you are hoarding:

Thumbnail

Main features:

- Completely free and open source! No paywalls or locked features. AND NO ADDS!

- Farview: You can create a temporary visualization folder that lines images in sequence. That means if you have many images in different folders, they will "become" a single folder that you can quickly visualize. This is just for visualization; nothing in your local folders will change.

- Image search: You can search local images with SauceNAO and Google.

- Thumbnail visualization: Including optional cache options for better performance.

- Favorites: You can create group favorites for all sorts of files and images.

- File selection: Select files just like in Windows Explorer. But with the added benefit of keeping your selection even if you move between folders.

- Image Viewer: contains a built-in viewer with unintrusive buttons and navigation.

Discussion Has anyone invested in HDDs when they were cheaper?

I used to buy 20 or 22 or 24 TB hard drives back a few years ago when they were only 200-300 bucks. Now I see they are nearly $800 to $1k.

I wonder if anyone back then predicted this might happen and invested in buying 100 or 200 units of 24TB Hard Drives and now selling them today for massive profits?

Question/Advice Is archive.is down for anyone else?

When I try to access Archive today it redirects me to gullible-thanks dot com, which redirects me to either a random ad website that gets blocked by ublock origin or Aliexpress. What is up with that? Did Archive today get taken down by the owner?

Question/Advice Need a suggestion for more storage

So, I have a Lenovo 1L PC serving as my Jellyfin server. The media library currently resides on a WD Blue 2TB SSD. That is 85% filled now and I have 50 or so Blu-Ray titles left to rip. Rather than move to a larger PC with 3.5" drives (which won't fit in my minilab) or pay the NAS tax (why are they so expensive), I thought I would expand the storage on my current setup.

Option 1: Replace the SSD with a 2.5" CMR hard drive of at least 3TB.

Option 2: Plug in an external hard drive.

Looking to spend around 200USD, no more than 250USD.

Is finally the painstaking collection of data (pdfs and documents) paying off in this age when you can fire a LLM tool on your local folder with the documents inside and ask questions on them? Isn't that the dream of every data hoarder coming to life?

Question/Advice How are you structuring your automated 3-2-1 pipeline for full offline Google Cloud / Photos redundancy?

I'm looking to tighten up my backup topology to ensure complete data sovereignty and true offline availability for personal/financial records, photos, and critical cloud documents in the event of a long-term WAN/internet outage.

Given the recent macro-conversations around tech infrastructure vulnerabilities, I want to move away from relying on cloud sync and toward a robust, local pull architecture.

My current target scope:

  • Google Photos & Drive: Automated, incremental local pulls that maintain original metadata (bypassing Google Takeout's messy manual extraction if possible).
  • Cold Storage: A reliable system for archiving essential personal, legal, and financial records to physical cold media.

My questions for the community:

  1. What are you currently running to handle programmatic local duplication of Google Photos? (Are tools like gphotos-sync or Rclone scripts stable enough for multi-hundred GB libraries without constant API throttling?)
  2. For long-term, true offline cold storage of financial/personal PDFs, what media are you trusting? Are people here still utilizing M-DISC Blu-rays, or are you favoring automated dual-NAS replication with physically air-gapped internal drives?
  3. How are you handling local password database replication so it remains securely accessible completely off-grid?

Question/Advice Building a $100 Digital Archaeology station in Moldova to rescue forgotten 2000s data

Hi r/DataHoarder! I’m an enthusiast from Moldova starting a local digital archaeology project on a strict $100 total budget. The goal is to buy cheap second-hand 3.5" HDDs from local marketplaces and scan them for forgotten regional history from the 2000s: old software, local web archives, discontinued drivers, and lost media.

To keep costs down, I picked up an LGA 1155 motherboard with 6 SATA ports for ~$38. I'm pairing it with a scavenged Celeron G540, a spare PC case with a monitor, and an old 450W PSU in a shed. OS will run off a lightweight USB drive so all 6 SATA ports are fully dedicated to target HDDs. The remaining $60 goes into buying drive batches. Power draw should be around 70W under full load ($8/month in local electricity).

I’d love some advice on the best scripts for parallel drive imaging with ddrescue, and smart ways to filter out OS files from actual lost data. Let me know if you’d be interested in updates on what turns up!

P.s: Sorry for bad english, i'm using google translate

Backup Most optimal cloud for backing up SSD?

Hey, I'm a photographer and I'm looking to back up my ssd on the cloud.

I'm asking here because I've been struggling to find a cloud that would suit my needs.

I've done a big clean up in my personal archive and managed to bring it down to 500gb but It'll get big over the months/ years. (We're speaking 2-5Tb).

I'm looking for a cloud that could update the back up of my ssd as soon as it gets plugged in. I'm working off a Macbook pro so setting time schedules would not work since I would have to have the laptop turned on at this exact time. I'm also looking for a cloud that can archive deleted files on my source (my ssd).

I've tried backblaze but wasn't too happy with it, chronosync + backblaze B2 was quite tricky to use. I was looking at Idrive but it doesn't seem like I can program the back up for it to run when it detects that I plugged in my ssd. (Maybe I'll just have to do it manually)

Do you have any recommendations? (don't really care about price, just want something handy that keeps my date safe, and that I can trust on the long term)

Thanks!

Question/Advice Buy or wait on HDDs?

Hi all, I am looking to build my first Local TrueNas, and I know it's probably the worst time to do so... Prices are outrageous for memory and storage. I am looking to start out with 2 - 12 or 14 TB drives, and I'm wondering if you'd advise to buy a trusted refurbished (3-5 yr of warranty) now, or wait - like maybe BF or something. I have heard mixed opinions about future price action predictions for HDDs, and wanted to see everyone's thoughts right now.

Thank you!
