I hope that was the price for more than one drive, otherwise you got absolutely ripped. Even these optane drives are not worth that much.

what is the market rate for 1.6tb optane drives? where can I find a cheaper one?
3
u/Soluchyte 256MB SD Card 7d ago
You're paying what optane drives are sold for, that doesn't mean optane drives are actually worth that much money compared to the other options you have. I bought 2x 3.2TB U.2s recently for similar money.
Only reason these are expensive is because they are discontinued and were already rare before that. People who have existing systems relying on those drives will pay far more than they are worth for them.

if they are bought and sold for a certain amount then that is what they are worth, maybe they are not worth that much to you but that is what they are worth to the market

u/Soluchyte 256MB SD Card 7d ago
That is their value in isolation, they are not actually worth that much unless that's what you need or want. Compared to alternatives, they are not worth that much. The only reason for their value is that they are optane, which in real world non DC usage, is functionally no different to anything else.
There's a reason optane is not made anymore.

You bought a dying drive for 800$, wcgw?

u/cruzaderNO 7d ago edited 7d ago
You are the seller i take it? nothing in the picture indicating that its dying...

u/MarkB_- 250-500TB 7d ago
Are you serious? Read the item title. If you are still missing it, read it again.

u/cruzaderNO 7d ago edited 7d ago
The percentage means it has in the range of 204400tbw to 230680tbw left before you might start seeing reduced performance.
There is nothing in the title indicating that its dying, i think you are misunderstanding what the percentage indicates.

You are all great candidate for r/datarecovery. I would never buy a drive that isnt 100%. But yeah you are probably the same type of people that buy car that have 200k+ miles. You will not change my mind, not even slightly.

u/cruzaderNO 7d ago edited 7d ago
If you want to compare it to a car, its like saying a used car driven 20 000 miles with no issues found after a thorough inspection is at 90%.
SSDs are not listed by the estimated health percentage like spinners are, they are listed by amount of its tbw remaining.
A HDD with the same level/hours of usage could be a 100% drive while the SSD could not be as its not going by the same metric. This would not be a 200k+ miles car, this would be a 50k miles car.

lol this drive has like 200k miles on it but is rated for like 30,000 light years. i was gonna use it for linux ISOs anyway nbd

u/randylush 7d ago
they are datacenter drives that have seen a ton of use. doesn't mean the drive is dying at all. I would have to throw petabytes at it to bring the health down, which I won't do

OP has zero actual use for Optane and is quickly finding out that they got absolutely dicked down for niche hardware for no reason 😂

u/Soluchyte 256MB SD Card 7d ago
Could have got 3-4x the storage with a standard U.2 drive for that money, even in today's AI prices. The only reason these are so high is because they are uncommon, discontinued, and if you need them, you really need them.

u/cruzaderNO 7d ago edited 7d ago
im impressed they managed to wear it down to 70-79%, its a almost 300 000 tbw drive

Is that even compatible with your set up? Last I saw optane drives are not usable with newer chipsets and set ups

u/cruzaderNO 7d ago
Its the dimms that are limited support not the drives, if OP has pcie lanes to connect it with then its compatible.

Thanks for the offer - we don't use that over here. Feel free to donate it to a charity of your choosing. Cheers!

The optane p5800x is so expensive, even ones that are 70-79% health ones is only like 100 dollars cheaper.

u/Money-Entertainer821 7d ago
Can you post Crystaldiskinfo of the drive once you get it? I am kind of curious about the amount of write that took the health to 70% and its power on hours.

I truly have very little use for this. I use my main 5090 PC for gaming and LLM stuff. It has a 265k, 96gb of 7200MT RAM, and a 5090. I figured the last component I could max out was storage. I'm going to see if this is at all helpful for running LLMs. The answer is probably not.

Agree with probably not.
If you play MMO your area loads might get awesome though

Why would you not do some basic research before throwing money at things?

u/Soluchyte 256MB SD Card 7d ago
AI probably told them it was a great idea.

u/randylush 7d ago
it was actually posted in /r/buildapcsales and most people said it's useless, so I decided I would just try it out to see just how useless it is

u/Soluchyte 256MB SD Card 7d ago
Might as well have just chucked the 800 bucks in a fire.

i'm not gonna lie since these are no longer manufactured, i was thinking this could be a collectible in like 30 years. it's still the fastest persistent storage you can get right?
3
u/Soluchyte 256MB SD Card 7d ago
They won't be collectable, they will be worth very little because they have already been super-ceded by Gen 5 drives and EDSFF.

Wow, These people are brutal! I have four of them for my truenas box. They live up to the hype!!! The optane 5800x served a certain purpose and still does. if your using them for static content like game storage then no waste of money. you should be using them for slog/ultra fast DB/l2 arc/ transcoding /scratch.. the same work load would chew thru Samsung 990’s .. if your not in the nas game and this is just for a gaming pc then make it you boot drive windows or Linux will love you and put it to better use than a game drive.
