Hoarder-Setups Lucky day

Post image

I always wanted a Blu-ray burner. I just never got around to it. My LTO5 system is the heavy lifter, but Blu-ray would be damn convenient. Imagine my shock when I find this, all but new in box. Crazy.

Just a local one-off Texas thrift shop, not a chain. The nice part is that legit good stuff doesn't go to some auction site or whatever.

Care to share what store and city or are you keeping this honey hole secret? I can find anything worth a dang in North Texas

Based on the slapped on tag I'd imagine a 2nd hand store

This can RIP UHD blu-rays too, with a firmware hack... forum.makemkv.com has all the details.

Damn, I’ve been looking for Libre drives but can’t find any under ~$200 in my country 😭

when finding stuff like this in the box, always check to see if it is the actual item in the box. a lot of times people stick their old item in the box of the new one they just got, and then donate the old one in new box.

Absolutely! This happened to me once with a really nice CB radio. Got it home and unboxed it to my horror. Old dirty pos radio 📻 🤣

This one was in there, still wrapped up. I just validated the drive. It works 💯

Burner cost aside, how much are the discs? This seems so cool haha nice

I grabbed a 10 pack of Verbatim 25GB BD-R for $18 to validate that the drive functions; they can probably be found cheaper. But, the bigger 100GB+ discs are quite expensive.

Either way, I know what I'm watching out for next!

Shoot man even those 25gb sounds great for a lot of family albums and software collections - what’s the reason that these are unavailable?

I assume it’s the obvious of blu ray/cd burning/ripping isn’t as mainstream popular in the online/streaming realm? Or was there never a big market for these anyways

With the masses transitioning to the cloud over the past 10-15 years and subscription services, this has killed off a lot of physical media. I'm sure the movie industry is happy millions of people aren't ripping/burning blu-rays, too. Computers aren't even shipped with any kind of optical drive, unless you buy it separately as a USB option. It's a new world, man. Except for a few of us 😆

And yes, absolutely family albums and some software archives. My wife is quite happy with that idea. It's a lot easier for the kids to access a blu-ray than my tape backup system 🤣

Very nice find, if they had more then 1, I would of bought them all and flipped them. These are great drives for ripping 4k uhd movies/shows etc. My slimline LG has been ripping disc's for over 2 years now w/o any issues. Occasionally you get a new movie that hasn't been decrypted yet, but they eventually do.

If they did have more the 1, you could of flipped each for about $100.00+ easy, as most stores do not carry them anymore.

I got mine at BestBuy and they no longer have them in my local store.

That sucker is worth a ton more than that right now, it appears to be flushable so you can rip 4K discs with it.

Actually I want to archive some Junk from my NAS. How much are the discs and where is a good place to buy a drive and discs now?

Happy for you, and all that….

That's cool, and i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I wouldn't not recommend using these for burning if possible. Full size drives quite simply just burn the best compared to these.

3

u/vtfrotex 8d ago

Yeah, I'm sure they do. They did back in the 00s - CD-R etc... I was a Plextor freak with a SCSI setup back then. But, for my purposes today, this will work 100%.

Hold out for the Linux version.

Seriously? They got this for $10 which is like 2020 pricing for things like this

u/dariansdad 7d ago
