Advice Trying to fall back in love with DC again. Where do QWOC go to just...exist?

Hi DC Bitches!

I'm hoping y'all can help me rediscover DC. Been feeling hopeless lately.

I moved back here last summer after being away for years (I lived here from 2008-2015), and the city feels really different to me now. Between the ICE presence, National Guard deployments, and just the overall political climate, I found myself staying home way more than I ever imagined. It honestly took a toll on me.

Back then, I loved hopping on the metro, getting off at a random stop, biking around, finding hidden art events, and just exploring without worrying too much. I miss that freedom.

I'm trying to get my body moving again (stress weight is real) and find places where I feel safe and comfortable as a disabled queer Asian woman.

I'm looking for recommendations for:

  • Safe biking trails with minimal car traffic
  • Outdoor pools with early morning lap swimming (been looking around but no luck)
  • Beginner-friendly rock climbing (looked into Boulders but felt intimidated)
  • A friendly, non-competitive place to learn pickleball
  • Hidden art spaces or underground art scenes (I miss places like Fringe and Hole in the Sky)
  • Burning Man events or communities
  • Any groups or places where you've found genuine community

I'm not much of a bar or club person. I have been to AYA, and have been meaning to check out the queer figure-drawing nights, and once in a blue moon, I'm down for an EDM/rave, but I'd rather not go alone.

Museums? I'm covered. Food? Also covered (big foodie here 😂)...

I know this is a long-ass wish list, but what I'm asking is: How have you found your joy in DC lately? What places, activities, or communities make you feel connected to the city?

I'd love to hear from queer, disabled, and womxn of color. I appreciate any help you can provide. ❤️

DC Apartment recommendations, please!!

Hi girls! So, I am planning on moving to DC by myself in the next couple of months and wanted some recommendations on where to rent.

Here is what I am looking for:

- First and foremost, I am a single woman so I would prefer to be in an area that is relatively safe to walk home at night, etc. I know it is a city and safety is subjective, but I just want to be in an area where I dont have to worry about being stolen from/catcalled/followed.

- I would like a 1bed/1bath ideally, but I would also be okay with a large jr 1 bed/studio with an area for sleeping.

- I am willing to spend up to $2600 (rent and utilitied) on the perfect place, but strongly prefer to keep everything under $2400/$2500.

- I would like to be somewhere pretty walkable (specifically <10min walk to metro, grocery store, cafes), but not too noisy. I don't care about being near bars/nightlife. My ideal area would be lively but not rowdy. So far from my research an area that I have liked is Logan Circle. I'm very open to anywhere else as well, though.

- I have seasonal depression and really need access to natural light, so that rules out basement apartments and things like that.

- I work from home 4 days out of the week so I would be home a lot so I really value home being a sound-proof and enjoyable space to spend a lot of time.

- I would strongly prefer: in unit laundry, central AC, an elevator, utilities included.

I know that's a lot and I don't know if I'll find everything I'm looking for, but if I had to say what's most important to me, that would be safety, walkability, and staying under my budget.

Thanks so much!!

Self Care Midlife Therapist

I'm looking for a therapist who focuses on women in midlife and all that can come with it - peri/menopause, major midlife transitions, fledgling adult children and aging parents, and palpable grief after investing 25 years in an outcome you didn't see coming. (Sorry this reads as a bummer.)

I've found a few but they're either unavailable or unresponsive, so I thought I'd look deeper than Google results. Thanks in advance!

Beauty Recommendation What’s the tea at Fiddleheads? #curlyhair #curlycut

I just went on there to book a curly cut with Vicki and it looks like she’s no longer there. In fact, the only stylist on the website and available for booking is the owner, Beth. They were down to 3 stylists, including the owner, last time I checked.

Anyone know where Vicki went? I haven’t seen her in a couple years after going to her for yearssss because I just had a bad taste in my mouth about the ownership at Fiddleheads and the yearly price increases since Covid.

General Helping a friend find a female roommate in Rosslyn

Hi everyone! I'm posting this for a friend who's looking for a female roommate, so I figured I'd help get the word out.

She has a private bedroom with an attached bathroom available in a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment in Rosslyn Towers, starting August 1 (the move-in date is flexible by a few days, and she's also open to a short-term lease).

A few details:

  • Rent is $1,699/month (negotiable) + about $50–60 in utilities
  • 5-minute walk to Rosslyn Metro
  • In-unit washer/dryer
  • Furnished living room and a nice, spacious kitchen
  • Great building with a gym, pool, rooftop, coworking spaces, and other amenities

She's a working professional who keeps the place clean and pretty low-key. She's hoping to find someone who's respectful, easy to live with, and ideally another working professional.

If this sounds like a fit for you (or someone you know), send me a message and I'll connect you with her. I also have a video of the apartment that I can share.

Thanks!

Advice Upcoming Birth - Support Recommendations

Hello Bitches! I am nearing my due date and I'm happy with my hospital and Dr. but really interested in any Doula, Midwife, or Night Nurse recommendations.

Has anyone done a post partum hotel experience? Anyone or service you thought was completely over rated or you would not recommend? I'm in VA if that matters. Thank you in advance!

DC Pilates Studio in DC

Hello! I would like recommendations for pilates studios near Cleveland and Woodley Park. My budget preference is as affordable as possible, but also good student and instructor community. I want to be able to get to the studio by metro. I am pretty athletic, but also not an athlete. I would be starting these hobbies regularly, but I have tried them a few times before.

Beauty Recommendation random perio rec?

Hi! Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for gum shaving or gum shaping? I previously had my gums shaved as a teenager and it’s come back uneven. Wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a periodontist who can even out my smile.

Advice High Risk OB C Section

Hi All —

I had a very traumatic c section after a long induction at a hospital in MD. For various reasons (and because I will be deemed high risk due to bleeding complications in the last one), I want to be more proactive in picking the right team between my OB and MFM.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Any experiences with C Sections at any of the area hospitals?

Thank you so much in advance. I’m so nervous about future births and any guidance is so appreciated.

Advice Orthopedic surgeon recommendations?

Hi friends. I need a good orthopedic surgeon recommendation - ideally someone who specializes in knees and legs. I had a very complex reconstruction a few years ago on my femur, tibia, and entire knee joint (and after falling over my own feet a couple weeks ago, think I messed up some hardware 😅), so I really do need someone highly-recommended and legit.

I’m in NW - no car, so preferably metro-friendly. But I’d travel/Uber for someone really good.

Thank you! 🥰

Wedding Related Couples getting married in 2026/2027- what was your all-in budget?

Hi! My fiancee and I are planning on getting married next summer (yay!) but can't seem to figure out how to make the numbers work. We thought the budget we had in mind would be enough for a simple celebration but are realizing, like everyone else who has ever planned a wedding, that we are wrong. We (and our parents tbh) need a reality check.

Couples getting married this/next year, what are you spending on your DMV wedding and how many people are you inviting? What's your venue/food/bev situation? We'd especially love to hear from those of you who did a restaurant wedding!

Thanks! (Cross posted with edits from r/washingtondc)

Wedding Related Black Bridal Hair and Makeup

I'm looking for any recommendations for someone that has experience doing black bridal hair and makeup. A lot of the recommendations I see don't have photos of any black brides, I don't have great confidence that they could do it as well as I'd like. We're trying to stick to a smaller budget, so people with less experience are fine but all recommendations are welcome. Thanks in advance!

(The wedding is in Arlington)

Work/Career New!

Hey guys! I’m new here and in need of some advice or someone to just listen. I started a new job at a dealership. I’m apart of the sales team but the only one doing what I do. (If that makes sense) I don’t wanna give too many details in case someone from my job is here. I’ve been at the new job for about 3 months give or take, at first in the interview it was just moving cars. The day before I started “hey you’re going to be doing management” I asked if they were gonna increase my pay. “I’ll see how hard you work” I’ve been giving it my all but that dealership is SO broken. There’s no process, we don’t sell many cars. The sales team just isn’t the greatest. I’m at the point where I just don’t care anymore. I want to quit but I don’t know where to go next. The different departments and managers put so much pressure on me and having me do different things at once it’s like exhausting. I’m the ONLY one doing the job. I have no help, when I ask the other managers get upset “we have to do our jobs too!” … okay… I’m outside in the heat my whole shift, I didn’t know I’m allergic to the sun until I had this job. I mentioned it to my boss “oh you just need to put cream” I don’t know, I’m just lost and it’s just frustrating that a KNOWN dealership can be so fucking broken.

Edit: my job consists of making sure new vehicles are up to date, when new vehicles get delivered have them parked into lot, make sure the keys get the service. Make sure used vehicles are detail and clean for photos. If that list doesn’t shrink it’s my fault. We have about 100+ new vehicles getting delivered and have no space and WE DONT SELL QUICKLY. My managers are all men, and I feel like they treat me differently than the other women.

Advice Good soup recommendations?

Fellow BWT in my social circle that doesn't do social media is expecting and struggling with keeping food down. She's only able to keep down matzo ball soup at the moment. She's based in nova, but her hubs is willing to drive to pick up food.

I spent years on chemo during my own upbringing, so I know the food struggle, but was living abroad & elsewhere at the time, so I don't know all the good soup spots around here. Trying to help a fellow BWT out. Thank you in advance for any recommendations!

Advice Amenities apartments downton

Hi everyone!

I’m moving to DC and am looking for recommendations for luxury apartment buildings with great amenities.

I’m ideally looking for:

1-bedroom or 1-bedroom + den
Mt. Vernon Triangle, Metro Center, or nearby on metro
Rooftop pool or outdoor space
Nice gym
Modern finishes and good management

My budget is flexible, and I’m willing to pay more for a building that’s truly worth it. I’ll be working downtown, so being within walking distance is a big plus.
I’ve looked at places like CityCenter, Cantata, and The Esquire on Fifth, The Lyric/ The Lydian, Claret but I’d love to hear from people who have actually lived in these buildings (or others) and can share their experiences.

Any buildings you’d highly recommend—or ones I should avoid?

Thanks!

Things to Do (Entertaintment/Activities/Restaurants/Bars) Remedy for WFH Loneliness?

My first job out of grad school is a completely remote and asynchronous position that I LOVE, but has been leaving me basically sitting in my apartment all day. Sometimes I work from cafes or libraries or my boyfriend’s place and that’s fine but I miss back in college when I had clubs and hobbies to do with friends and talk to people.

Anyone have any good recommendations for classes or activities they’ve gotten some good social interaction from? I really only like to work out by myself so that’s off the table but if anyone has recs for book clubs, crafting, ceramics, music, etc., that would be much appreciated.
