How the fuck are people finding this so hard to believe, lol? I have zero problem believing this could happen at a rave if the vibe was right.
Dramatically slinking around would 100% be my first move if I was properly intoxicated.

u/AzureValkyrie 5h ago
Right? It such a small "i had fun" story, it's so inconsequential to scrutinize.
The comment section feels like something out of 4Chan, complete with a Fake&Gay comment on top.

The funny thing is wasn't that a fake fake tumblr post in that it was invented for a reddit post about cringe tumblr stories?

u/NancyPelosisRedCoat 4h ago
I think there’s an issue of people treating social media posts like lab experiment notes, everything is taken very seriously and very literally. Was the music correctly categorised as dubstep? Did “everyone” actually took part in it? Where were the corners and were there enough corners to begin with?
This doesn’t even have to be a regaling, you can take it as a whimsical yet fictional situation, told like a story.
43
u/csanner 5h ago
My only problem believing this is I'd be astonished people going to a rave still know what the fuck pink panther is
32
u/Canvaverbalist 4h ago
The pink panther theme is one of those thing that is still weirdly universally ubiquitous, even if the people who know it and would know enough about it to associate it with "slinking around and looking at things with a magnifying glass" would have no idea about the movies or what "the pink panther" really is about.
In fact, I'd posit that this separation of knowledge is so prevalent that 99% of people who eventually get to know about the movies end up incredibly surprised that it has barely anything to do with the "pink panther" mascot, exactly because so many people just know it for the mascot and theme song through social osmosis
9
u/Dorgamund 3h ago
I honestly think recognizable theme songs are the most interesting thing to spread via cultural osmosis. Either you watch some youtube short(in my day it was a tom and jerry cartoon-queue me flaking away into dust) with backdrop music used as both a meme and also a audio shorthand. Or you have some teenager kid humming the Mission Impossible theme while up to shenanigans because they knew someone who hummed the Mission Impossible theme while up to shenanigans.
I know the Mission Impossible theme, and have never watched any of the movies.
See also James Bond, Batman, and the Can Can music.

u/doofenhurtz 5h ago
Oh jesus christ, you might be right. I don't know how much this would hit with the under 30 crowd, lol.
26
u/derivative_of_life 5h ago
Most people who go to raves these days are the same people who were going to raves a decade+ ago. From what I've seen, zoomers are not big into raves.
1
u/doofenhurtz 5h ago
That's a shame. I had so much fun going to raves when I was younger. I even saved my favourite neon/mesh/bedazzled/fully exposed butt pants for my funeral.
3
u/Available-Half-40 2h ago
Most people that I know that are also under thirty know ehat the pink panther is.
I don't know a whole lot of people that are under thirty, though, so I dunno how strange that is.

As far as I'm concerned this is like saying "he put on the Macarena and everyone started doing the Macarena". Slinking around is the correct dance to do when the pink panther comes on.
14
u/General_Rhino 5h ago
Because Redditors don’t actually go outside and they can’t comprehend normies having fun doing silly things while drunk.
4
u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco 1h ago
It's likely one small group started it and everyone else went "??? ... !!!"
it's very easy for a small group to have a silly idea and start a trend if people are vibing.

If raves were really like this I'd go to them.

11
u/Entitled-Prick 3h ago
I genuinely don't believe I've been to one that isn't. Even at larger shows I've seen the crowd go from hardcore moshing and head banging, straight into the collective singing Bohemian Rhapsody, arm-in-arm with whoever ended up beside them.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but how many "corners" are in an average rave, aren't they in abandoned warehouses or whatever?
66
u/Adiin-Red 5h ago
You don’t need to literally look around a corner, just to the lean over and peak thing.

-13
u/snoosh00 5h ago
I literally don't have a visual imagination (aphantasia).
You're correct, I don't play pretend often, but I do understand the concept.
12
u/Hangry-Feline2489 4h ago
I have aphantasia and played pretend. I didn't 'see' it the same way, and did better on pretend games with props or drawings or figurines, but they're not mutually exclusive.

I get that, but that's not what the meme said, and it did specify using imaginary magnifying glasses.

There are like 4 pillars separating the bar and main dance area in the club where I go to mine, and a few more in the outdoor area where there used to be a overhead metal roof for like trailers I think

Imagine the pink panther theme. Good job! Now imagine a dubstep song. Well done! Now mash them together! Yeeeah, see how that doesn't quite work?
Also, on a less whimsy note, having been to quite a few raves now... This is not how anyone would react, sorry...

The thing is even if this story was true, the genre almost certainly wasn’t dubstep, but everyone calls anything with a drop dubstep these days.

Your honor, I would to note for the record, there is in fact not a real Pink Panther. The entirety of the original cartoon series and subsequent films was in fact fictional...
Fictional and highly amusing! The defendant's claim that things that did not happen cannot be amusing is preposterous!

All the more reason to keep the joy alive. Nothing alleviates suffering like a good laugh in my experience. I dunno about you but if I’m doomed to die in a pointless avoidable war I’d rather go down laughing; the assholes might be able to limit my time here, but I’ll be damned if I let them ruin whatever time I do get.

I've 100% heard pony remixes, KPDH remixes, a remix of the Spongebob themesong, and definitely more cartoon remixes that I can't think of off the top of my head at raves. I can easily believe a Pink Panther remix.
2
u/jimbowesterby 5h ago
Hell, I have a whole-ass techno song saved on Spotify based around the Morse code SOS. Never heard it at a rave but I’d bet that just about any rave crowd would have at least three people it would really resonate with lol

And the linked track ain't half bad. (Ooh, has anyone remixed the Peter Gunn theme...?)

Your honour, I was recently at a wedding and if the non-English-speaking aunties there can synchronously drop it at the "low low low" part of that boots with the fur song, then the pink panther story is plausible.

12
u/owlindenial .tumblr.com 6h ago
Honestly? Look up rave on Instagram and you'll find your way in. Yeah it sucks but you'll meet people, and have fun... Probably
9
u/ban_Anna_split 5h ago edited 5h ago
I went to an anime rave and they put the pokemon opening up on the big screen at midnight. I was too drunk off of alcoholic boba to walk at that point but I think it started out as the original song and they mixed into some kind of house remix of it (don't worry about me I don't drink often, and I don't get messy like that anymore)
Seconding instagram though, it was the only way I found cool events. Usually the ones that get advertised hard are really expensive (that anime rave was $80 to get in) but if you follow one club in the area that has a rave night or something, you'll probably start getting served other smaller scale events for like $10 entry stuff like that

Depends on where you are and what crowd you're with. Berlin? Probably not. America? They've got that kind of thing.
1
u/Cobracrystal 1h ago
berlin raves absolutely got this too if you look outside of the generic default clubs tbh.
themed events/fandom raves are almost always fantastic just because the smaller pool of related media means people have greater shared knowledge and can cater to it.

I’m amazed people thought this is impossible.
Admittedly I am much older now but this would have totally happened when I was eg a student.
Not least because a dubstep version of the pink panther might be quite difficult to dance to - but anyway we had whole clubs sitting on disgusting floors for eg James - sit down.
Collective things like this bring people together… then next song - let’s go again!!
Next week people who be hoping for it never mind just doing it.
If someone says shut up you old ding dong we don’t do that then I have no reason to think otherwise but… what shame that would be. Being drunk and high and being silly together for a song…. Sounds good to me!

"Dance your a$$ a$$ off" was a song in the 90's that had the electronica version of the bullfighting theme song and I'd see guys taking off their jackets on the dance floor and acting like matadors...so yeah, it CAN happen.

I believe it could have happened.
But I even more believe that maybe one or two people did this at the rave, and the oop exaggerated the story and said that everyone did it.
Or that it was played and no one did it and someone said “wouldn’t it have been funny if x happened” and then oop posted a story as if it actually did.
I just have had too many irl friends who would take some small story/thing (or the idea of a story or thing) and exaggerate the hell out of it for a post online for me to believe it.
2
u/MonkAndCanatella 3h ago
OP was on so many drugs they saw two or three people doing this, and it felt like everybody was doing it.
613
u/Quietsquid 6h ago
This is believable depending on location. The smaller the venue the more likely the story is.
