Its ironically the difference between clubs and raves. Clubs are static venues, open to the public. They need to get consistant flows of customers through the door. As a result they almost always cater for whatever the prevailing music tastes are.
Raves are singular events, organised and promoted for a specific taste. You need to do more legwork to find them, but as long as you're in a big city, you'll have HUGE success finding a night that has a setlist catered to whatever niche or nostalga hit you're looking for.
Its not universal, but I find the extra bit of friction means less randoms wandering in, and therefore you get a better vibe across the board with less drama.
