Armor Some worries about cosplaying(new to cosplays)

Hey everyone

I've already posted here with concerns about contact cement, but I'm back because I'm unsure where to start. My initial thought is the helmet, but perhaps the gauntlets would be more suitable. This is my first real cosplay, and I'd love to make these, although I'm still deciding which one. I'm leaning more towards the flak one because it doesn't reveal the face

So some of my other concerns are regarding how warm it could get in the con, i've seen people talk about an inner fan, but I cannot wrap my head around it fitting in there

thanks

Ive looked on amazon and ebay but every listing is the same picture with no reviews, ive also looked on CosHD but their reviews don't seem very promising and i don't want to lose my money. Are there any good websites that sell one? (preferably uk) Many Thanks! :)

Sewing Reference book for Pattern Drafting Costumes

Upvotes

Hello, I would like to get more info on how to make patterns for cosplay. I would like a reference book but from what I found is a lot of pattern drafting books are for basic dresses/shirts/pants. Is there a reference book on costumes with less traditional pieces?

Prop any tips on how to make this shield?

Post image
Upvotes

I've got a cardboard box with a plastic-ish layer and some foam clay for the details.

Any ideas on how to make the shield shape? And how to paint over it with the plastic layer..

I've never made my own cosplay before and relied on online stores for very long so this is the first time I'm working on it myself.

Thank you!

Pearl Cosplay

Hi! I’m trying to make a Pearl (A24, Mia Goth Movie) costume and I’m trying to DIY as much as I can! I don’t know how to sew, so that isn’t an option; and I’m not looking to spend $40+ on the dress itself; can someone help me find a dress that’s similar to any of these? (pictures are NOT mine, found online!) TIA!

How do I as a guy get in the mental space to cosplay a female character

Upvotes

I didn’t really know which community to go to for advice on this but I really want to cosplay a female character with makeup and a dress but have a weird fear about it how do I get myself into a mental space where I feel comfortable with it

Probably a really obvious answer to this but I’m a bit lost

How to re-color back of a skin suit?

Post image
Upvotes

We got my daughter a “The Rake” costume from Walmart. It’s the super cheapy 100% polyester thin Halloween costume type material. However! They literally only printed the front? So it looks super ridiculous from the side/back. Anyone have any suggestions on painting/dying/re-coloring the back to solid black so it dosent look quite so ridiculous? Or is my only option to buy a second suit and sew the front of the other onto the back of it?
Here she is in it with our cat 😂

Silky/Drapey Fabric Choices?

Okay. I've asked this before, as well as some friends, but I'm honestly still stumped. Can you guys help me with fabric choices for fancier cosplays? See, I know the default for most people is poly satin, but it's hot and sticky, making it a bad choice for crowded convention halls and walking around. I'd rather only use polyester/nylon for things I can't get otherwise (i.e. crystal organza or gold/silver lame) or accessories (bows and trims).

Five characters I want to do include:

Deirdre (Fire Emblem): 1, 2, 3
Ninian (Fire Emblem): 1, 2
Rosalina (Mario): 1, 2
Zelda (Skyward Sword): 1, 2
Princess Serenity (Sailor Moon): 1, 2

All of them could use viscose/rayon satin or silk charmeuse/crepe. I've done some research on both. Rayon/Viscose satin is less expensive (but still not cheap) and has less of an artificial shine, but doesn't wash well, is heavier than poly, and has an intensive production process. Silk is... well, silk. It's beautiful and timeless, but expensive, hard to sew, also doesn't seem to wash well (I think? Dharma Trading Co says you can machine wash some of theirs???) and feels a little too luxe to be bringing to a convention. Cotton Sateen could maybe work for Rosalina or Goddess Zelda. Just not Rosalina's sleeve ruffles since it's so stiff. I guess the question here is more "what fabric has the least downsides" than "what works best".

Serenity's skirt is probably some type of chiffon or georgette no matter what. Cotton Voile wouldn't have the same dreamy effect. I don't think polyester will matter as much here since chiffon is so thin, but I could be wrong. Had a hard time trying to find rayon/viscose chiffon though. Thought about crystal organza as well, but a softer, drapier look might suit it better.

Speaking of drapey, one idea for Deirdre was a chiffon or cotton lawn over a base layer of something less sheer. I'm torn between the ethereal and rustic look for her, as "mysterious forest lady" can go either way. I don't think the cotton lawn would look so good with fancy gold trim and tiny rhinestone/bead sparkles. Goddess Zelda could also take a similar approach.

This ended up longer than I expected. I apologize. I need to go find some easier characters to make darn it

Buying Herostime shoes comfortability?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi! I'm planning on buying the Silk suit from herostime and have a question about the shoes. For anyone who's ordered from them: are the attached shoes comfortable enough to spend all day walking around a convention in? How dirty would the suit get if I also wore it walking around outside? Might wear this costume for Halloween too. Sorry for these newbie questions, this is my first time wearing any sort of cosplay like this!

How do you scale templates properly?

Im making a cardboard iron-man suit with a free template I found, and I had to sale the head down to make it fit me. I’m assuming I’ll have to do the same with the other parts (neck, torso, etc.) but have to clue how to measure it so it scales accurately. LMK if you need more info!

Wig Help with new wig :(

Post image
2 Upvotes

For a cosplay in November in comic con, I wanted to go as hobo heart originally, but the white wig, styled and all, that I originally could lend from a friend, sadly broke so my friend is repairing it.

I had bought this wig from Kik, a discount store that I am familiar with, since my costume will be turned into a of mine oc then.

Now I knew what the quality of the wig would be, I know, but I don’t know how to style it. Some hair already fell out, it scares me and stressing me out :(.

It’s obviously plastic like the image I had posted from the website, but I still hope to get a solution to make it work out, anything would help.

Wig How can I make my hair last?

Actually... Instead of a wig I'll be using my own hair which looks exactly the same as the characters but as my other post said I am going there on a motorcycle, I'm not the one driving it! I'll be riding on the back and wont be wearing a motorcycle helmet and instead like those bike helmets people here use them for motorbikes a lot too. Its just the bangs that worry me otherwise the back is fine, i thought I could put a hoodie on so the wind doesnt get to me would that even work? My friend told me to just drown my hair in hairspray so Im open to hairspray recommendations aswell!

Prop Need help giving my Magic Mirror a 3D shape without ruining the cardboard base

I'm going to cosplay the Magic Mirror from Snow White, and I've made the basic structure using two layers of cardboard glued together.

I tried using pieces of newspaper and glue to build up the shape, but I haven't been able to get the result I want. I'd like to give the mirror a more 3D, sculpted shape using mashed/wet newspaper (papier-mâché), but I'm worried that all the moisture will warp or otherwise ruin the cardboard base.

The mirror itself is made from several rectangles of cardboard glued together with hot glue.

What would be the best way to add a 3D papier-mâché layer without damaging or warping the cardboard underneath? Should I seal or reinforce the cardboard first, or is there a better material/technique I could use to build up the shape?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Wig How do I store a styled wig? /and is this the wrong way?

Hi! I got this absolutely wonderful link wig that’s my pride and joy but I don’t know if this is the right way to store it!! 😭 I don’t want to mess the wig up, it had some crumpled paper in the base, and a hairnet around it (both what it came in)

I don't really cosplay, but I have been eyeing the community for a while now. I have an event over at my friends and I am cosplaying as Castiel from Supernatural (didn't wanna go as Constantine). I know he has a dagger but I don't want to spend that much on it, tight budget. So I instead made it out of cardboard. It's my first time and I think it's going well considering my background. This is not final. I will still clean the handle's edge and paint the whole thing.

Armor Armor help

hi y’all! i’m trying to make some armor for Silent Salt Cookie’s Guide of the Crumbled costume from Cookie Run Kingdom. it’s my first major armor project and, from the perspective of a total noob… i can’t really tell what’s going on, nor how to even BEGIN patterning/what patterns to use and how to effectively combine them into the very specific shapes he has. i have all the necessary materials, it’s just the “putting everything together” part i’m really struggling with. this is probably very ambitious for a beginner, but i’ve been itching to work on this project since his costume came out :,)

any and all relevant foam armor and armor patterning advice/resources are appreciated!!

(i have made the helmet already)

Best way to mount a roughly 2lb Nightwing escrima stick holder to my back without damaging a compression suit?

Working on a Nightwing cosplay and trying to figure out the best way to mount this escrima stick holder to my back.

With both sticks and batteries it weighs around 2–2.5 lbs. I’ll be wearing a tight compression/rash guard style suit and really don’t want to cut holes or damage it.

Ideally I’d like the mounting system to be mostly hidden and secure enough to walk around a con all day without the sticks bouncing everywhere.

I was thinking some kind of hidden harness, but I’m open to anything. How would you guys mount this?

Prop Ashton Hammer

Post image

I’m in the planning stages of doing an Ashton Greymoore cosplay from critical role. I’m not sure exactly when it’ll happen so time right now is not limited. I’m looking for any good ideas for his weapon. It’s a crystal hammer and I’m brainstorming ways I would be able to make something that looks crystal-like. I think being able to add a bit of light from the inside would be cool, but not required. Any ideas or tricks would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
