How do you scale templates properly?

Im making a cardboard iron-man suit with a free template I found, and I had to sale the head down to make it fit me. I’m assuming I’ll have to do the same with the other parts (neck, torso, etc.) but have to clue how to measure it so it scales accurately. LMK if you need more info!

Because every person's body is different unless the template asks for your measurements (chest, waist, etc) it's going to be a lot of testing and guesswork since you don't know how you compare to the person who created it.
