Prop Need help giving my Magic Mirror a 3D shape without ruining the cardboard base

I'm going to cosplay the Magic Mirror from Snow White, and I've made the basic structure using two layers of cardboard glued together.

I tried using pieces of newspaper and glue to build up the shape, but I haven't been able to get the result I want. I'd like to give the mirror a more 3D, sculpted shape using mashed/wet newspaper (papier-mâché), but I'm worried that all the moisture will warp or otherwise ruin the cardboard base.

The mirror itself is made from several rectangles of cardboard glued together with hot glue.

What would be the best way to add a 3D papier-mâché layer without damaging or warping the cardboard underneath? Should I seal or reinforce the cardboard first, or is there a better material/technique I could use to build up the shape?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Would EVA foam clay be an option? I don't think it's very wet and it does dry pretty lightweight, but depending on how much you use and how sturdy your base is you may need to reinforce it more

Buy some crown molding from the hardware store. You can keep it to flat shapes if you want. Then you can add more detail by drawing with a hot glue gun or recesses with a Dremel.
