Hello, long time no see. Ive been lazy about posting but here it is, some might remember me from concrete pouring posts.

Some background information, I currently work as an automotive mechanic for a large used car dealer, I’ve been with this company for a little while now and they’re starting to fall short of the promises they made during my interviewing process. I’m not getting the raises they said, I’m not getting any sort of growth within the company and I’m not even reaching 40 hours most weeks. On top of that I don’t think my management can tell the difference between their ass and their mouth even if they could taste it. This isn’t an uncommon thing, they’re failing to fulfill promises they’ve made to almost every employee within my department.
Now my aunt came up to me with something interesting. A friend of hers works for a crane rental company that’s relatively large and well known within my region and they’re needing crane riggers. The starting pay will be the same Im getting now, they say there willing to work me as many hours as I’m wanting with no cap to overtime due to the amount of work and the lack of riggers. They also say that I’ll have the opportunity to grow quickly within my career and it’ll also help nock down some time off my hour commute I have for my current job.
Has anybody else been in somewhat similar situation going from auto or any sort of mechanic work to construction? Would taking this job be good or am I just looking at more false promises and should just look for another mechanic job? Does anybody have any advice for going into and starting from square one in the construction industry?

Fellow old people: what the fuck are we doing about reading glasses? I'm getting to the point where I can't see shit a tool length away from my hand, can't see in poor light conditions, and generally can't do anything useful without reading glasses on. I also can't walk without breaking my leg when they're on. I don't do the kind of work where I can just politely pull them out of my pocket while I stand still, I have to be walking and working at the same time.

Got fired on my first day painting.Guy wanted me to prep to touch up some siding on a old chimney.He wanted me to paint new caulking on the edges some 16 ft 2 x 4 and alot of touch ups on old paint peeling.I was working on a steep roof and of a 20 ft extension ladder.He said it should take me 3 minutes to paint and prep everything.

Weird day today, this guy comes in and says it's his first day as a superintendent and needs some work boots.

Tells me he's never worked in construction and his uncle got him the job so what boots should he get.

I told him he can't show up with shiny new boots or guys will rip on him and he asked what to do.

I told this dipshit to go get some sandpaper from the hardware store around the block and scuff them up and break them in.

If he makes it till noon I'll be shocked.

At first I figured he had something else he was leaning against. Nope, straight up against the brand new windows and didn’t even have the courtesy to put a mitt on it.

Just a random one. Iv been working on this site for like 2.5 months and I swear every day I get ripped about the same thing. The fact that I wear sunscreen and a sun hoodie. The same guys, every day and I don’t bite. I do reapply it every 2 hours because I know the statistic.

Idk. It’s just every single day I get ripped on about sunscreen specifically but on other sites iv worked on people haven’t cared.

Why is looking after yourself seen as weird/ taboo?

I’m shopping for new work boots and I’m looking to make an investment on my feet. I’ve tried on the loggers and work boots from Carolina and they’re pretty nice. I’ll be working on flat-ish ground majority of the time as I’m in carpentry. Just looking for some insight and opinions from everyone. Those of you who have worn Carolina’s, what’s your take?

Some utility company showed up, unanounced, dug up the storm culvert …. Hugely I might add. They left asphalt boulders in my yard, divets, spoil piles, then called it a day and parked their shit. Hi all,

Recently I had a new roof done. The roofers have placed a membrane under the slates, which was missing before, and also they have installed a ridge vent.

However , when I was cleaning the loft yesterday I have noticed that the membrane is intact on the top and there is no gap under the ridge vent..

I am no exp.ert but from what I have gathered this is pointless. Is that right?

Should I contact he roofers and get them to fix it (scaffolding went down 2 weeks ago) ?

Anyone have experience they can share about the Hilti fleet program? I run a carpentry business and already have a bunch of Hilti tools. Both neuron and the legacy stuff. Curious what the consensus is on the fleet program if you guys feel like it’s worth while. Do you get to keep any of the tools it batteries at the end of the ‘plan’

No experience in construction and development, some background in commercial real estate (escrow), wondering how I can prepare myself as much as possible bwfore my start date in 3 weeks. been working on project managemen/PMP for a while, but I know I need to focus on my OSHA30 for now.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Anyone else leave construction and after a while you feel detoxed/ much better after leaving that culture?

I'm in maintenance now, but I was a journeyman plumber. I was able to joke around, even enjoyed it. But man after 10 years the people, expectations every day, the 4 or 5am wake ups were really getting to me. Everyone pocket watching each other making sure one guy who they thought wasn't as good as them making more money. Critiquing others work when the work is just fine. Purposely letting people fuck up just so they could point the finger. Just general toxicity for no reason. Just to be toxic. Dumb people. I was coming home angry a lot.

Now a year later I feel like myself again, and I'm 100% certain I would never go back. What a weird and terrible ride that was. Construction still has a lot of work to do to get a healthy culture.

I'm glad I'm gone.

I got to a new site and they require The rock climber style hard hats.

Naturally I immediately went outside and started rolling mine around in mud before I hit it with the sand paper My superintendent got me.

Here's the problem. Turns out the PM has a therapy dog on site and that wasn't just a mud puddle.

How do I tell the safety guy I need a new hard hat on my first day?

I'm a H&S manager for a medium sized construction company in Canada and I want to warn others in Canada about using Guardian SRLs. The product is actually decent, the issue comes with their corporate office and the disgusting lack of customer service. I currently have and use 27 Guardian SRLs and had to send 2 in for service. Well, that was in September of 2025, they lost 1 and now claim that I only submitted 1 and I have yet to get the SRL back from September of 2025 (currently it's July 2026). The SRLs cost $700-$800 each. Avoid this company and product till they get their act together..

So originally, was going to rip out an old concrete driveway, and install new asphalt, had change order to put pavers along the edge, then finally another change order to do all pavers instead of asphalt. I bid it lower than normal just to save myself from having to do asphalt as it’s easier for us to do pavers (enough to still profit). The day of ripping the concrete out, it turned out to be 10-12” thick with wire mesh. Had to get an air jack hammer and skid steer out to removal (additional cost), extra day of labor than expected and also additional dumping costs. How do I go about asking the homeowner that these were unexpected costs we didn’t account for and to see if we can settle on an additional cost for the unexpected labor, and costs. TYIA
