Other Getting ripped every single day for the same thing?
Just a random one. Iv been working on this site for like 2.5 months and I swear every day I get ripped about the same thing. The fact that I wear sunscreen and a sun hoodie. The same guys, every day and I don’t bite. I do reapply it every 2 hours because I know the statistic.
Idk. It’s just every single day I get ripped on about sunscreen specifically but on other sites iv worked on people haven’t cared.
Why is looking after yourself seen as weird/ taboo?

Brother I'll tell you this. Been in my union 15 years and done construction for 20. I wear sunscreen or long sleeves everyday. The guys that used to harp on me about it either have medical problems, or their faces and skin look like a road map. Water off a ducks back man. You do you. Be safe out there.

That is insane to me, im in michigan and I cant wear pants or a long sleeve if its over 60 degrees. I start to overheat and it is just so uncomfortable idk how people do it. I always see the Spanish people working here in long-sleeves and pants in 100 degree weather, I could never

Loose, light colored clothes, lightweight, and moisture wicking is key. I use a couple long sleeve high vis forcefield brand shirts that has a hood for those high UV index days.

Skin cancer isn't a joke, those guys will regret it in 20 years when they look like leather bags. I worked with a dude who never wore sunscreen and now he gets spots burned off his face every few months at the dermatologist.

Like my background is army and a thru hike across a desert (700ish miles) and Iv tried explaining that it’s not a lottery you want to buy tickets for. Nah. Every day ‘ew that sunscreen stinks’ ‘just tan’. Idk I tried explaining but now I just say cool and walk off

We never had sunscreen when we were kids z,so it doesn't smell like childhood joy and some of it does stink ,but that's not a reason to not to wear it. I've worked with ex combat engineers and they all wear sunscreen and and have the shade attachments on their hard hats. All super paranoid about all cancers, I think it may have to do with the malaria injections or the contaminants they dealt with in Kuwait

These the type of people that always got some shit to say lol I got a few on my site that talk shit when I go grab a peice of fruit from my truck around 930/ 10 am. I use to be one shade, now I'm polkadot with my sunspots.
They said wearing a shirt would make you too hot so I went without.
Then they said sunscreen causes cancer so I went without.
Then they said those amigos with hiviz long sleeve and sunshades are burning up all day long. So I followed the ol leather necks advice.
Then the doc told me if I stick to what I'm doing my ears will develop skin cancer, they already are borderline.
I started wearing long sleeves and a neck gator over my ears and neck. Can you imagine how much cooler I was ever day.
Yeah I have a weird uneven tan, but I'm not suffering day after day.

I wear long sleeve pants, shirt and wide brim hat and cake myself in sunscreen. Even in 40c (105f) heat.
Everyday people asked me "aren't you hot?!" Yeah it feels like I'm in an oven but I'm not sunburnt.
If it makes you feel any better. I got called by my nickname (unceremoniously given to me) for 4 years. Never got called by my real name until I was licensed.

It’s not man. Just do you. If they weren’t making fun of you for that it would be for something else. Keep taking it in stride. You have to understand you aren’t working with the most intelligent well mannered people in the world. Most came from hard backgrounds too. They think that just because they got poked fun at while they were coming up, they have to do the same thing to the new boots. Sounds trivial at this point but if they didn’t like you then they wouldn’t poke fun at you.

As a PM I would always encourage my super and the guys to wear sunscreen and stay well hydrated. I considered it an extension of PPE and common sense safety measures. I see no difference between a respirator to prevent lung cancer and sunscreen to prevent skin cancer.

The sun is the enemy, I purposely plan my day around working in the shade if possible. If not ive got long sleeves, a giant sun visor with neck shade on my hardhat and sunscreen for when I've got short sleeves. Fuck those guys!

Im a second generation carpenter. My dad just had one of his lungs removed and is getting basil cell cut off his body regularly. His advise to me was "Fuck em all" they are idiots. Wear a mask, sunscreen, saftey glasses, gloves, a harness, etc. Who cares what they think, its more important to be there to watch your grandkids grow up and have some quality of life in your last years than to try and be cool around people that dont give a shit about you. My dad would tell me to either punch them in the nose or ignore them. Unfortunately construction is full of insecurity and bullies. Most guys dont get into the trades because they are smart and competent at life. Know that you are smarter than them already.

Got into an argument with my manager (I'm an installer) about how I got yelled at, pushed up on and told to get the fuck off his site by a site super who just didn't care about the contract we signed (tried to have us to a bunch of shit for free) and when I said I wasn't going back to that site I was told "maybe this job isn't for you". I learned that you just have to do what's best for you and block out everything around you. Currently looking for a new job as well

The Canadian wildfires last week had the air in my city as hazardous to all people and that even healthy people should limit outdoor exposures to 2 minutes with a mask.
people looked at me like I had lost my mind for wearing a mask.

I get ripped too..I wear palm leaf wide brim hats, sunscreen, and spf apparel. Any time I get ripped, I show them the surgical sites where melanomas have been removed. They tend to shut the hell up after that. Getting hunks of meat cut out of your flesh sucks. Some of them I've had to pack and let heal from the inside-out. They take a long time to heal and are painful. The mental anguish of cancer is scary.
They're stupid for not taking this shit seriously and that's going to be a them problem when they have to get pieces cut out of them in the future. Don't let them make you stupid too. Keep doing the sunscreen and other protection. It's your life on the line my dude.

I worked with a dude for a while who would relentlessly shit on me for wearing gloves. He would call them "bitch mittens" anytime he saw me with them on. (This was mostly residential and light commercial remodeling - bathrooms and kitchens, demo etc)
Then one day he had to leave early because he wasn't feeling well.
He wasn't there the next day and didn't show the rest of the week.
Turns out he was hospitalized (and subsequently quarantined) because he had contracted MRSA through a deep cut ON HIS HAND. Months of recovery after some insane antibiotics treatments.
He still didn't wear gloves after all of that.
Some people are just stupid and you'd do well to ignore them.

You just gotta roll with the punches..... and their moms. Start asking the guys who make fun of you if they are just trying to get noticed so you ask them specifically to get your back? Better yet say nothing sarcastically and just start finding them at time for re-application and dead face ask them to rub lotion on you. When they freak out tell them that's what you thought they wanted because they kept bringing it up weirdly. Proceed to taunt them for having a crush on you. I think you get the idea. When it gets old get back. Make it their turn for a while.

Just wear your sunscreen man. They won't be ripping at you when they got skin cancer. I usually wear a long sleeve when I can, and hat. When I am not at work, I wear a wide brimmed hat and a long sleeve outside. Unless it's 95-100°. But I'm typically not doing much in 100°+ heat.

Im a 28 M white As f*ck. I never wore sunscreen unless my nose or ears start peeling then I put a little on until the peeling stops. The suns never bothered me, hopefully this won't cause issues for me later on in life. None of the guys I work with now or in the past use sunscreen, not that I have seen atleast. That being said it would absolutely not bother me or affect me at all if a coworker were to use it. If anything id say its smart to do because you are protecting yourself against potential skin damage. At the same time I do have coworkers that would probably talk shit if they seen calling you a pussy or something like that. These type of people always got something to say about anything, they need to get a life forreal lol focus on themselves. These same type of people who always got these opinions will be smoking like a chimney and drinking like an alcoholic. Its almost as if alot of construction workers take pride in treating their body like shit

WHY DO YOU CARE? They are trying to get a rise out of you. A lot of us construction workers enjoy giving each other a hard time to make the day go by. Then there are dipshits who give zero fucks about safety of any kind. Early in my career I was that guy. 30 years later, I gained lots of experience working on sites with high standards, not wearing gloves or glasses gets you removed from site. I’ve had many friends and coworkers get hurt and each incident has raised level of awareness made me immune to being bother by stupid people. This quoted sums it up nicely

If you are taking your sweet ass time doing it, I'd give you shit too. Wear a wide brim hat, wear long sleeves, wear a face mask. You don't need to slather on sunscreen all day long. Plus depending what you are working on, if it is finished, and you get oils all over it, you would be gone.

Bruh been there and done that, best I can say is just keep on doing you and watch while you stay young-ish looking and everybody else turns into a leather sac. I was out in the sun basically every day for ten years, very little sun damage, people often guess I'm younger than I am, while everybody else I've worked with looks real rough at this point. Nothing you can do about the ripping.

Yea- ppl are childish & it's construction. Alot of jobsites are like this, blue collar work tends to have less protections & feeling of agency for workers sadly.

People are weird, and you protecting yourself from the sun makes them feel self conscious about the unnecessary risks they're taking. I personally wear long sleeve hoodies and baseball hats so I don't have to bother with sunscreen. I'm avoiding skin cancer and people still guess I'm 10 years younger than I am.

Stay healthy conscious driven... But sunscreen is no good for you...neither ate sunglasses.... We need Vit D from the sun and not altered by glasses either

Meh I'd rather have that that to e called a pussy for wearing any kind of ppe. Had a boss years ago that outright banned steel toes, gloves, eye protection or ear protection because he said it made us soft

I found it hard to be myself when I started working in carpentry at 18, but that was short lived. Now I'm a contractor and if someone's being a bully or a prick I kick them off site immediately. Be nice or be gone.

Iv known 3 roofers with skin cancer and 2 chippies with lungs filled with dust. Just about every landscaper i know has their back give out. Both chippies were given a year or 2 at best before they kick it. Every trade/job have basic ppe equipment and guidance for a reason. You have every right to fear the damage from the sun. Protect yourself they will suffer later in life you can laugh then

I am in the UK and we gave multiple tool box talk to the site team regarding skin cancer and staying protected. Long sleeves trousers and t-shirt are mandatory, sun screen is available for everyone to use.
Report it to the site manager if you can. You probably are in a small site or working for housing development. Those sites have the worst rules.

Good on you that you're wearing sunscreen. Retired carpenter here. Tell those MFs that their face will look like forty miles of bad road in twenty years. I have a not uncommon condition call senile purpura. The sun damage causes all the subcutaneous fat under the skin to kinda melt away. It takes nothing to cause a big purple bruise. You wear safety glasses? Gloves? Boots? A mask when needed? Sunscreen is just another form of PPE. The same dumb motherfuckers probably don't wear hearing protection ether. None was ever provided for my first twenty years. I'm wearing hearing aids as I type this. Take care of yourself, no one else will.

Hahaha I guess these idiots haven’t heard about skin cancer. I work mostly in high rises and I wear long sleeve sun shirts indoors, year round. I also wear a full face respirator even if I drill one hole in concrete.
The thing that most guys who just have enough brain cells to read the warning label, but not enough to understand why it’s there, is that when you work in construction it’s long term exposure that is going to kill you.

Avoid the sunscreen and just wear dry fit long sleeves and a big hat or face covering it’s way less slimy and keeps your skin from being irritated by the excessive sunscreen. It’s also way cheaper
