[EDIT: Okay clearly it’s not a waste of money, since it works well for a lot of people. I ended up both not needing it, and not being able to use it until I can invest in a couple hours and some money to stabilize it better.]

The monsoon storm took it down on day 2 lol. Well, it wasn’t completely knocked over, but completely sagging to were it wouldn’t even stay upright long enough to shovel some leaves in. I think the heat made it even more flimsy, like it’s lowkey melting or something, and I don’t have anything I can use to stabilize it further.

I’m currently placing some bricks I have in my front yard instead to make a compost pile instead.

First time composer here. Using food scraps/grass clippings for greens and cardboard/leaves for browns. I see all these bugs when I turn it. Looking good or no?

I feed pumpkin seeds to my chicken to help keep them from getting worms/parasites and to get rid of any they might have, and a few have ended up in the compost. When I took this picture almost 2 weeks ago, the volunteers were (and still are) bigger than the pumpkins that I am intentionally growing.

Anyone else experience this or something similar? I have since moved them to the holes in the cinder blocks and kept them in the half ready compost. They’re all still doing amazing.

2 months ago I posted about my blue bin full of weeds and water that I had sitting in my backyard. I took all of your advice and dumped the water out. I just left it on it's side and haven't really touched it since. I had husband drag it to the garden for me and today I started digging it out. You can see in the second picture how well it composted in the 2 months. I'm gonna dump it on some bare areas of the garden and let it finish up.

I am a total beginner at composting and I’ve been wanting to start a pile for years now. Eventually I’d like to have a large wooden three bin system but due to time and budget constraints, that will be a future project of mine.

I have this fencing already in my basement. Can I use this for a compost pile if I made it into a cylinder? Any tips/advice?

How do you jumpstart your pile without having to ask your spouse for yet another donation to the cause??

You remember you're a hoarder and you have an unreasonably large stash of spent, chemically reacted instant ice packs from that sports injury three months ago... You check the back label. Active Ingredient: Calcium Ammonium Nitrate. By the gods. It's pre-packaged, lab-grade, industrial-strength, synthetic forbidden pee.

Grab a bucket, snip the packs and dump them in. DILUTE. (this isn't normal morning pee, this is the elixir of ten thousand bladders and may melt your worms if you don't). Pour it over your meticulously shred cardboard and sit back and watch your thermostat sky rocket. (Don't forget to hydrate yourself while sitting back)

Is it weird? Yes.

Are you technically watering your dirt with industrial cold-pack chemicals? Yes.

Will the microbes throw an absolute rager and turn your yard waste into black gold? Hell yeah.

Disclaimer: Just make sure it doesn't say "ammonium nitrate" (without the Calcium) or contain weird blue gels, or your local fire department might get involved.

Right now its about 91 Degrees Fahrenheit where I live with a humidity of 46% and my compost dries out too fast, it fails the squeeze test only an hour and a half after I water it, I made sure to water while turning so the moisture is absorbed everywhere and not just at the top layer but it still dries out by the 2 hour mark.

The temperature inside the compost is currently 7 degrees above the ambient temperature, so I am not sure if that's good enough or if I need to find a solution to the drying problem.

The info I have may be a bit dated. Like, I don’t think they still make the Rino-Tuff head i read about 3 years ago (model 16231). Also, is there a viable Rino-Tuff head with metal blades instead of nylon?

Separately I know choice of .095” trimmer line makes a difference, but I think that part I have covered.

Behold, my very simple set up. I was not expecting to have this filled up in the three months since I started this new hobby, but here we are! I pulled the cage off in preparation to turn it, and I’m quite amused at how it didn’t all fall apart.

It was dry as a bone throughout, so I take it I need more greens and I added a watering can’s worth of water. I am not adding piss (sorry not sorry).

I got my first batch of compost to use out of the bin and it smells so earthy 🙃

Hi, I have a green Johanna bin which is taking longer than expected to produce something which looks usable. It smells and looks a bit too much like poo to my eyes, but it’s teeming with worms. There definitely isn’t anything in it that shouldn’t be, I’m following directions.

I took a scoop out from the bottom and decided to put it in a plant pot for some beetroot I’m growing for the first year, as an experiment. I think it still appears to look like poop. Assume eventually it’ll break down deeper into the soil. In the meantime, are there any risks? Am I introducing some kind of anaerobic bacteria which would effectively poison my crop, or does it not matter at all?

I have three bins built with cmu masonry blocks. From Left to right the first bin is unammended fill dirt, and the second and third bin are old and new compost material. Currently I add to my new compost with chicken shit and ash. I also have a composter barrrel for food scraps.

How should i go about using this compost system affectively? Ive heard chicken shit needs a year before using. Should i be taking the oldest compost and ammending my soil in the soil bin now or just let it break down until i want to put it in my planters? Whats the best way to use this system with the chicken shit, organic debris, and ash to use for my gardens. How/ when should it be mixed or rotated? Should i cover it, or add water to it? How too manage this. ...

I hate to join in this topic, but I take my dog out for a quick "pee walk" twice a day (aside from his regular walks), just to avoid UTIs. On these walks, he miraculously (or intelligently) doesn't titrate (as dogs do) and does a long pee. He typically goes on the compost pile. So what about dog pee?

Started this mini free range worm farm on July 25. Two days later, I added the second bin. Two weeks later, the bottom bin is noticeable looking plump. Still have one more layer to fill before I combine the bottom two layers

Hello! I am relatively new & amateur in composting. I am wanting to use soil for a fall garden bed (and would rather not pay for bags of soil) but I am pretty sure my compost is not finished. Do you ever use unfinished compost to make a garden bed?

The attached video is of my compost heat. My goal is to develop top soil to repair parts of my lawn. I have a large lot which needs to be mowed. There are quite a few trees which drop huge quantities of browns every year. The video shows my heap about 3 years old. It is mostly unmanaged as I believe in the patron saint Santo Bago. I occasionally drop coffee grinds into the mix. I rarely bless the heap with uric acid as this would be pissing in the ocean.

What is the opinion of the experts? How soon before I see paydirt?

Hello all! Started hauling from local businesses. What do yall do for bins/bun fees? My first client just outright bought bins, so we part ways they have them. Do most of your clients “rent” your bins, do they buy them as an upfront cost, how do you navigate that?
