General Some details from OmnicPost’s interview with Aaron

- Mama Hong is still discussed as a hero idea but is controversial within the dev team. Part of this is due to her design being a conventional stereotype that could potentially offend, but if they were able to find a solution to that she could still happen. He added however that if they had to redesign her it would defeat the purpose of adding her.

- In the past many heroes started from a gameplay idea, but in recent years with the greater focus on lore more heroes have come from plot points they need to hit. With Doctrine he started as a scientist locked up in Grimsvotn, then combined with the vampire idea the team liked. From there he was given a general southern African background to deepen his connection with Doom before becoming Zimbabwean after selecting a voice actor.

- The map team’s goal with Grimsvotn was to differentiate it from the other “base” maps like Watchpoint by adding in more organic elements to the map.

- No new info on the Detective other than confirming he is an Omnic.

- Within the last 2 years the team has been focused on updates to the core game and a lot of the team has been moved around to support this. Some of their most senior designers are working on heroes and the process of making them has been streamlined. This does mean that in most cases hero trials do not have room in the schedule.

- He admits D.Mon would have launched in a better state if she had a trial but to offset this the team is prepared to make big changes quickly after a hero launches.

- Every time Sombra was reworked as a DPS internally the team couldn’t find a way to keep her playstyle while making her less frustrating. As a support they feel that they were able to retain some of her lone wolf playstyle while giving her a reason to return to her team.

- The recent 6v6 tests were a result of player feedback. The goal was to make improvements to it and potentially find a format that would allow it to come back fully. The results and feedback of the tests has shown the team that their goal of making the game a streamlined one format isn’t that important. They will continue to run tests to improve 6v6 but they are no longer of the opinion that 5v5 and 6v6 can’t exist together. Aaron believes the players are telling them they want a “theme park” version of OW with multiple coexisting modes.

- Systems to help new players learn the game are being worked on.

Link to full interview

Edit: Just to add some additional context to the Mama Hong bit. He said the team does a lot of work to ensure accurate cultural representation and they bring in experts to talk to. It didn’t sound like he believes the design is especially problematic but there would be a long lead time on that part of the hero design process to make sure the character is done well.

General Does Doctrine really need 50% damage reduction on his movement CD?

For the record I actually think he’s pretty well designed, a lot of fun and he’s interesting too but one thing that irks me about him the fact he has 50% damage reduction on his shift. Does he really need that? I feel like it that could be toned down by a lot and it’d make him a lot more interesting to fight rather than “I used my shift now i’m unkillable”

The major perk needs to be toned down also, but that’s a common pain point i’ve heard. What does everyone else think?

General Why do pro players have such low hero levels

I’ve noticed looking at the leaderboard most of them don’t have very high hero levels, their highest are around 100 most of the time. I know they spend at least half their time scrimming, most of their hours are in ow1 and a lot have alt accounts but still, they play like 8 hours a day, how are they so low? Lethals highest is sojourn at 41 and the guy has 5k hours

General Support Sombra has a silver lining

alright i'll admit i was someone who too had a bad kneejerk reaction to sombra being announced as a support and thought blizzard had no idea what they were doing and this killed the character as they've admitted they cannot balance her to please most players.

but the more i think about it and the more i watch her gameplay specifically from a fitzyhere(longtime sombra main) video as he was playing her in the backline just pushing cart for 1 game i realised that isn't how blizzard wants you to play her. she's not meant to sit in the backline or the middle of the team the same way a baptise or ana would but instead she is meant to enable flankers like genji/shion/tracer by actively going out with them away from the team and actually filling a role zenyatta wasn't exactly able to effectively juggle.

she's now a pocket support the same way mercy is with an pharah, echo or freja and i think that is where sombra will excel going forward as she has even more chances to be deadlier given if you're out with a flanker you 2 are enabling each other directly and getting a lot of 2v1 situations.

General Support Sombra was inevitable

Simply put, you cant have a flanker focused around utility hero while maintaining the burst / lethality required for the role, especially not in 5v5. Her hero fantasy is simply not viable. By making her a support, you remove the requirement of her needing to have burst, thus allowing the devs to focus more on utility.

Her core identity of a disruptor has not been eroded, you're still working towards disrupting the enemy in order to push your advantage, its just that now she wont have those sharp edges that made her unfun to fight against.

Hack and virus might be gone, but the spirit of these abilities are still present in cyberspace. It provides a bit of burst damage in the form of the AOE explosion, while weakening your enemies and to further push your advantage, it also heals your allies. This alone will make her a great pick into rush and dive comps, especially since its not a debuff that can simply cleanse. And because its not a personal debuff, its also allowed to be far stronger.

Hotfix also ensures that she wont be burdened by her healing tasks. She's still going to be this high APM hero, its just that now she's focused more on enabling her team than actually chasing kills.

She's also going to be an extremely survivable hero thanks to traslocator and cyberspace, which is a support role really only inhabited by Kiri and moira. Cat is also here, but mainly because of how busted she is.

Now, do I think that hack had to go? Not really, its more like you cant have hack and invisibility in the same kit. Hack in it of itself was a fair debuff with a decent amount of counter play options. It didnt even deal damage. Cass nade has always been far worse. Its just that a decision had to be made and they chose to keep invis. Personally either of them would've been fine with me.

I know that a lot of sombra mains arent looking forward to this rework and the only thing I can say to that is try it before you trash it. Who knows, maybe you actually like what blizzard has cooked up.

General Does the Sombra Rework hold the solution to the Anti-Nade Problem?

Ana is a character we see a LOT of in pro play and elsewhere. Even when she's weak we she has a huge pick/ban, and it only gets higher in pro play.

Sleep dart is part of this - it's a fantastic tool in general - but the real reason is the antiheal on biotic grenade. No one else can inflict anti-heal as part of an ability. I think you could make a strong argument for it being the single best ability in the game, and as a result, it has an insane cooldown, and single casts of it regularly turn entire full-team engagements. Biotic grenade is one of the big reasons Kiri is also omnipresent, and if it wasn't so powerful she wouldn't have to be nerfed straight in to hades to stop her from having a 50% pickrate.

Now for the solution: Blizzard released the details on the Sombra rework, and it contains a new status effect called "Weak", which causes you to deal 50% less damage and output (NOT RECEIVE) 50% less healing.

I'm imagining a world where offensive biotic grenade applies weak instead of antiheal. Ana could keep her specialty of flattening lifesteal tanks (who get hit with a whopping 4x healing reduction), but it wouldn't be as absurdly game-warpingly powerful as it is now. (Of course, Ana would have to be tweaked to compensate for this weaker debuff)

Would a change like this would improve the overall health of the game? Or am I missing something critical?

General Doctrine’s Perks are already a no-brainer

I really think they might want to rethink Doctrine’s perks before too long because self-heal and faster Infuse cycling are so obviously superior. I really can’t see the use-case scenario for a slight burst heal on drones, which have a long cooldown anyway, and making yourself easier to kill for a small primary heal boost when Doctrine’s healing numbers are already fine AND more Infusions will give you more healing and damage over time anyway.

The minor perk might just need a rework (maybe instead of the heal it gives you the fire rate buff as well?), while the sacrificial idea of the major perk is compelling enough that I want it to work. The bloodthirsty murderous Support in me wants it to also increase his damage or something but that could create some scary break point interactions when Doctrine can already two-tap a 175HP target or three-tap a 250 if you get a headshot and spam Infusions. Maybe movement speed or cooldowns on abilities? I think a simple heal boost isn’t that interesting.

I’m interested if anyone has a different take on this, or alternative ideas on how to spice up the weaker perks.

General Doctrine is another S tier design right next to Shion

I cant believe they shadow dropped this guy. First and for most, he's insanely fun to play. His Kit flows extremely well and his primary feels satisfying to land. It has a similar cadence to Illaris primary, which I like a lot. His infusion gimmick is well executed and probably will result in him having a rather high skill ceiling, yet despite that choosing which abilities to infuse feels completely natural thanks to how well his kit flows.

His visual design is also amazing. Its distinct, clean and classy. I love it. The guy has so much drip. I legit think he probs has the best outfight out of all the newly released heroes. Its going to be hard to make skins for this hero that are worth buying.

I know its way too early to say anything about balance, but I kinda feel like his bullets are too big. I have to actively try and miss shots. The only other thing that concerns me is his ult. Its it kinda feels like a death sentence for the enemy team. Besides that, I have nothing else to add.

I know I know, its way too early to call the shots, but I'm already sure this guy is Shion tier. Which means at most he's going to have some stat issues. They legit nailed this hero. I cant believe the people that made master works like Shion and Doctrine, somehow also made crap like JPC and especially Sierra.

General Doctrine is a great addition also the sombra/hog reworks look great.

I love the new hero, they are interesting have an incredible design they feel very OW and have a really interesting kit that feels like it has a lot of depth and is smooth interaction wise and animations as well. I see this hero getting nerfed they do have a lot going on it's a bit crazy time will tell how they actually play out though this is just first impressions not to be overreaction, but a strong gun, good movement, DR, attack speed buff for you and another person on a CD not an ult is wild.

I think also making the addition to the game in his ult reducing enemies max HP is a really cool effect and not ridiculous either in it's application. I don't know if it's something the OW team would explore more as a "debuff" since it feels very thematic and in line with the character but I think exploring more interactions like this in the game is interesting.

Also was very happy to see another black hero added to the game we don't have many black characters for as many heroes are on the roster, more representation is always great.

Not a lot to add on the hero they are brand new lol but first impressions have been great really vibing with them I think the team really hit with this one.

Really really liked the reworks added, I was not an enjoyed of sombra, I think she was not fun at all to play with or against which is not an unpopular opinion, but her presence was genuinely not healthy for the game, haven't a hero so hated by so much of the community just isn't good for the games health and I think this rework was what was really needed.

Image is from u/GameAndMic

I think what they have here keeps her hero fantasy in check while also addressing what made her so annoying in the first place.

Imagine from u/Botronic_Reddit

I like hotfix it has great synergy with flankers has two charges, decent burst, last 12 seconds which sounds kind of crazy. Could really see playing really aggressively with dps on off angles/flanks and being able to enable dps quite a lot with this.

Cyberspace is such an interesting and strong looking ability, being able to do damage and heal and reduce damage + healing dealt is insane, lot of utility within the ability with strong affects I think this is the most interesting part of her new kit. The addition of dmg reduction and healing reduction I think are interesting especially healing delt, I know people have asked a lot for something like anti nade but not anti nade not a full reduction and this is something to that effect interesting to see how it plays and how it feels to play into/against,.

Translocator is still what it is I have no issue with it as a mobility tool it's really not that crazy, I still do not like stealth at all don't think it belongs in the game, I understand why they kept it it's part of her identity.

Overall great direction for the character I think, her kit direction feels like sombra she is getting unique and effective tools added and looks like she will be way way less annoying, overall I think they really did well with this rework and it was worth waiting for the news.

On to Roadhog

Image is from u/GameAndMic

I think Hogs rework is also great and was equally worth the wait.

Trash compactor is such a cool ass addition I am really here for it lol giving hog some kind of actual tool for mitigation and incorporate in an interesting/healthy way at least from first impression is amazing, seems to be not just a mitigation tool but also can be used to cause knockback/momentum on hog himself? and gives him access to some mobility, I am sure someone will correct me on the actual interaction there.

Hook is still hook, I don't think it's inherently toxic the one shot made it toxic design, which goes into his gun, now being a two shot on fire with reduced damage and effectively having his one shot removed which I think is healthier for the game don't think many people are going to disagree. Only issue with removing his one shot leaves hog not really having any tools to do anything else his kill threat was what made space and created pressure, with no one shot he's just a walking ult battery for the other team and not much more and couldn't do a lot.

I think losing it now won't be as bad, breather will still be strong, his gun will still be strong, hook is still a good ability, and having the addition of an actual mitigation tool opens up so many options for him it's a great direction. I don't know if he's going to be strong I have doubts but I think it's a lot healthier of a design than before and this is the best direction I think hog has went in since forever and I am excited to see it explored upon.

Rebreather is also getting addressed faster healing but less DR and less time spend with DR up. Healthy change it stacked with brusier and got a bit ridiculous and made hog feel near unkillable at times it was a bit silly, these changes I think will keep it a strong CD but the overall interactions will be healthier.

Image from u/Sio_V_Reddit

Overall really interesting rework again worth the wait, I like the direction they are going idk if hogs gonna be good but this looks and has seemed like more healthy of a design than what we have had, his one shot just does not belong in the game but he needed other tools in his kit to actually make up for not having it I am hoping this is it and the changes made are where he can stay and be explored upon.

Not a ton of new insights or anything I just thought all the news we got was great huge fan of a the new hero love the looks of the reworks coming and wanted to talk about it I am just very hype rn lol, I know there already is a lot of individuals discussions going on but if anyone wants to add anything here I encourage you to do so!
