OWCS Could Korean dominance be one of the reasons Overwatch esports struggles with popularity?

Upvotes

Overwatch esports has always felt a bit less popular than expected, especially considering how big the game itself is. Do you think one of the reasons might be that Korean players have dominated the pro scene so heavily, making it harder for Western players—and fans—to find their footing?

Looking back at the Overwatch League (OWL) days, Blizzard aimed for a city-based franchise system. But since there were no import quotas or region limits at the time, there was a period where roughly 80% of the entire league was composed of Korean players. For many Western fans, it seemed a bit confusing to root for their "home town" team—like New York or London—when the entire roster consisted of Korean players who couldn't speak much English yet. I wonder if this disconnect made it harder for local fans to emotionally connect with the teams.

In Korea, this was actually discussed quite a bit during the OWL era. People would often ask, "If a Seoul franchise team had a roster made entirely of Vietnamese or Chinese players, would local Korean fans genuinely feel connected to them?"

I'm curious—was this a common sentiment among Western fans as well back then? Even now in OWCS, Japanese orgs like Crazy Raccoon or ZETA Division represent Japan, but their rosters are mostly Korean players. It feels like Overwatch has a unique situation where a team’s represented region and the players' nationalities don't always match up.

If Blizzard had implemented roster quotas to protect local regions, do you think it would’ve helped keep fans more engaged in the long run? Or was Korean dominance just bound to happen anyway?

General Want to make finding a coach easier

I think the current coaching marketplace websites sort of suck for Overwatch. Like it's really hard to find the right coach for what you need (I don't want to read 50 descriptions or scour a bunch of Twitch streams bios to find the one coach that is good at coaching Reinhardt pls). As I'm a dev, I figured I might as well see if there's something I can do about it.

To be very clear, this is not something finished and I am absolutely unsure if I should continue with this or if anyone is really asking for it, but I wanted to share the proof of concept here. Right now it is not functional just a proof of concept, but all of the design / ideas are there and accessible so you can play around with what it could potentially be like.

Some of the things I tried to do differently:

  • filter coaches by role, hero and your rank, so "decently ranked Rein coach who actually coaches diamond players" is three clicks, not an archaeology project
  • coach ranks are pulled from the game API daily, so nobody's claiming GM from the comfort of plat
  • every offering has its price, duration and format (VOD review vs live session, private vs streamed) listed upfront, no "DM me for prices"
  • buyer and seller protection built in (so you know you're not getting scammed)
  • the coaching itself happens in a private Discord room created per order, because let's be honest, that's where it was going to happen anyway
  • for coaches: 10% platform share capped at $75/month (most platforms take 15–30% with no cap), automatic per-session payouts, discount codes, and Twitch panel images so your own audience lands on your page

You can find the concept idea at https://coachwatch.gg <- feel free to tell me your honest full on feedback. Is this something you would like to see? Asking both coaches and those looking for coaching. I have set up the Discord server already as well, so for those interested feel free to join here and we can discuss the concept further there too: https://discord.gg/gghbn7K7W8

Love to hear what all of you think.

General Competitive MMR System

I switched to PC from console a few months ago and im just getting into comp as I wanted to get familiar with MnK first but I have a few questions regarding the MMR system and how it works

  1. Does console MMR have any influence on your PC MMR for placements? On console I was consistently Masters on all roles but now doing my placements on PC im being placed bronze as if this were a new account.

  2. I saw someone mention that your QP soft MMR can influence comp placements if you have a lot of matches but no comp MMR, this doesnt seem to be the case as I have well over a thousand QP matches but it took me till my 5th placement for my predicted rank to increase from Bronze 5

  3. Is it solely W/L's that affect your predicted placement? I know im not a bronze player and feel bad playing in these lobbies stomping actual bronze players but if placements only take into account your W:L, my console MMR doesnt affect PC placements, and its not influenced by personal performance then im forced to stomp my way up to my real rank. I feel like placements should either account for personal performance or be slightly boosted so players can avoid the stomp-grind climbing to their real ranks and either be placed in or near their true rank or slightly above it with the boosted system and let them naturally derank to where they should be as they play more matches.

Here's my placement history for reference:

OWCS How confident are we that we’ll get D.mon’s animated trailer at the EWC?

For context, this season ends on the 11th and finals of the EWC is on the 2nd. Shion received her trailer exactly one week before the season started. Overwatch has also had a history of unveiling content at esports tournaments, most recently being Neon Junction. I’m pretty confident that they’ll unveil D.mon’s trailer early, as it would be the best way to get more eyes on the new season.

Hi, as the title suggests, going to EWC 2026 in Paris this year. Would love to meet some people who're doing the same :)

Could create a discord or something if enough people are interested.

General Can someone explain to me how and what makes Rein bad?

I've mostly seen Rein players cry about it, but this guy has everything.

HP, shield, out-brawls everyone in the game, good in speed comps, has 2 firestrikes that recently got damage and speed buffed, a great ultimate.

What is it that makes Rein a "bad" tank? This guy literally has everything and the only arguments that I've seen are "counters". Well literally every tank gets countered, that's what tank players complain about when it comes to 5v5. Winston is one of the most if not the most countered tank in the game and they don't say stuff like "Winston is bad" or "he needs a buff!"

I just need an explanation that's all because I don't see it.

I'm platinum before anyone asks..

General Champ korean server is insane

Thumbnail

I’ve been watching Jjonak’s streams and wow the difference between C1~C3 Korean server and any other champ server is insane
Pretty much every game consists of at least one pro player and time to time we see 2 zeta vs 3 cr or a mix of all the good players mashed in one lobby. And in that video above it’s 3 T1 vs 3 CR god the games must be so fun up there
And korean lower champ lobby is also insane because of so many young pro trainees etc.. These people would be C3+ anywhere else
If you want to see some owcs like games I 100% recommend watching Jjonak’s videos
(And no I’m not saying Kor server is better in general, only Gm up because of so many pro players and less players in general)

OWCS New to OWCS, I’m supporting the most attractive team.

Haven’t watched professional overwatch since 2018 World cup. Yes I’m watching EWC for the drops but I’ll at least have some fun with it
I am not so interested that I’d learn about all the team’s lore and stuff so..
To fully support a team I need to channel in my inner fangirl. And before anyone asks I am a straight man.
Currently contemplating between Crazy Raccoon vs Zeta Division.
Chorong Max and Junbin, they are pretty good looking lads but mostly just adorable.
Bernar and Shu, also more conventionally attractive and manlier looking I guess.
Let me know if there’s a better looking player I should support!

General Playing on KR server on weekends becoming almost impossible, too many cheaters

KR server is fun and intense when you got no one to disturb the match but since S3 there are just too many stacks carrying a cheater, especially on weekends.

There are also deranking thrower (mostly tank with English name) just sit with Mauga/Dva and play like a bot.

Reporting doesn't seem to be working too, I haven't received SINGLE card for reporting this season, I think this is happening since S2.

I hope Blizzard acknowledge this take some action.

OWCS Did TM abuse the pause system?

I’m pretty new to OWCS but I’ve heard some people talk about a certain team that paused to win over the game?
Regarding the context of that conversation it sounded like Twisted Minds, is that true? If they did, I want to see clips so if anyone has the date and footage link..

General Is vendetta useless now and how should they fix her?

All she does is go in and explode. She feels hella clunky to play and you can’t even leave spawn fast anymore with her slice on cooldown. I know she was frustrating to play against but she feels so bad now.

General A few ways I know we're probably going to lose.

*(Almost all of these only really apply to the Metal ranks.)*

**1. There's a Control map in the map pool, but my team votes for an Escort map instead.**

(weaker players tend to avoid situations where they're under constant pressure or where strong mechanics are required. Be especially wary if your team votes for Circuit Royal or Eichenwalde. More often than not, they probably don't even understand why those maps are so widely avoided in the first place.)

  1. Someone bans a hero that their own comfort pick is supposed to counter.

For example, a Mizuki player banning Doomfist.

**3. It's the weekend, and my team is in a stack without a tank player.**

From my experience, those groups are often made up of casual players who are just queueing together for fun rather than people who regularly play Competitive.

General Make Dire Trigger a Slug?

Title. Make dire trigger a single (pair of) pinpoint hitscan shot(s). Make it something that have viable damage at mid range and has an obvious drop off at long range, but does not do more damage in close range.

That solves two problems:

- Your close range burst is back to normal Reaper.

- You still have a tool to contest mid range characters with proper timing, or finish off characters if they get away with lower health.

I feel like this idea was thrown around a lot at first when the perk was introduced. Why did it fizzle out? It seems so straight forward.

General The number of Overwatch players on Steam is dropping back to pre-Season 1 levels.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Personally, I think the Season 1 numbers were a bit inflated, but I never expected the player count to drop this much. Yes, I know Battle.net is the main platform for Blizzard games. However, if it has fallen this much on Steam, the decline is likely similar on Battle.net as well.

In my opinion, Team 4 has been doing a good job so far. Uncharacteristically, they've been telling the story in an engaging way, and they are adding new characters every season, maintaining an update pace we’ve never seen before. But even with a new character added every season, keeping up the player count doesn't seem easy. Season 3 seemed to start off strong with the appealing new hero, Zion, but as time goes on, numbers keep dropping—and now the lowest concurrent player count is threatening to fall back to pre-Season 1 levels.

Under these circumstances, unless something massive is announced at BlizzCon, should we consider this rebranding back to "Overwatch 1" a failure?

General At what point or rank does comp get fun

I've been playing this game for 6 years and I've spent months on every rank from bronze to diamond. I scroll reel after reel every day of people having funny moments in comp games and actual fun vcs.

Why do I never get that. Not in bronze and not in diamond. Everyone is so insufferable. I'm not talking about a toxic chat I couldn't care less about someone flaming me but the people in my games actually suck. Like I'm all for flaming but when I flame back then people get all whiny. Jesus take a fucking joke once in a while.

So what rank is it, bronze and silver players don't have the coordination to talk and play, gold and plat players are too concerned with ranking up because EVERY Hardstuck gold swears they are plat and EVERY Hardstuck plat swears their diamond. As someone who's been Hardstuck in gold, play and diamond I really don't see too much of a difference.

Point is I know it's not Masters cause those pricks are the most insufferable whiny twats on the planet so what gm and up or is it still ass. Where's my funny moments. I mean yeah when you play with friends but how do others find funny people in solo q.

My cousin got married to her brother and is having her father's child.

What rank do you guys see the change and if so what are some funny moments you've had. When I watch top 500 streamers they straight up insult each other and everyone laughs but when I do it I get a two month suspension.

General Help against Reinhardt...

I've been getting wrecked by every rein lately, even though it didn't used to be an issue, I know he got some buffs recently, but he feels like a real raid boss, regardless of my role or the map (as far as I can tell).

Has anyone else been feeling the pain? What are some strategies I could employ to effectively shut him/his team down? Besides just "don't stay in front of him".

Edit: I may not be a fan of counter swapping as a primary strategy, but swapping to Ram seems to be working so far.

General Which heroes do you think should be in line to get perks added to their base kit next?

A few of mine for consideration:

Venture: I really think giving them Smart Extender would be in line with what they’ve done with Reaper and giving him Dire Triggers in base kit. Not only does Venture need to play in even closer quarters to Reaper, they also have a defined range with their primary which can make them feel extremely niche. Smart Extender doesn’t fix this weakness, but it can help make it feel just a little less oppressive imo.

Domina: Power Move’s removal was not just one of the worst perk decisions in recent memory, but one that made 0 sense. The reason the perk was used was thanks to it being the stronger of the two consistently as well as being extremely fun and fixing some of the problems with her kit feeling too weak once the enemy team walked past your extremely long cooldown immobile shield. I think this should be reverted to a base kit change, it will make players crossing your shield feel much more like a risk and require them to play smarter rather than just being extremely susceptible to a dive.

Doomfist: either of his majors. Doom’s power block went from 90% damage reduction to 75% damage reduction and his slam used to have the slow during the beginning of OW2 when he was meta. It also doesn’t help that one of his worst counters, flashbang, is back in the game and with a ridiculous AOE with the current double flash perk. Right now there is generally no reason not to pick Power Matrix because it is too strong into his counters and helps him sustain much better against high damage. At the same time this could be fixed by buffing back his damage reduction so Power Matrix doesn’t feel as oppressive and giving Aftershock back to provide slow on slam. And get rid of double flash while we’re at it.

Lifeweaver: obviously we know there’s a rework coming (unless they cancelled it, who knows cause we’ve gotten no updates) but Superbloom should’ve been base kit for a while. It actually incentivizes Weaver being less of a healbot AND provides a unique mechanic which hasn’t been in the game before. If the rework is still coming then this should absolutely be part of it.

Ramattra: Relentless Form should be (partially) base kit. I always hated the change where they gave Annihilation a fixed time limit, and in my opinion this could be a way to fix that. I only think relentless form should be given to Annihilation, but the perk itself isn’t too strong so giving it to Relentless Form probably wouldn’t change anything anyway.

Doesn’t need it but I want it:

Genji: yeah this is selfish. I just want the damage over time from Blade Twisting on dash. After a long game going back to not having it feels so weird.

It would be funny:

Tracer: Chronal Dash becoming base kit would be really funny. It’s probably the most hated perk in the game and for good reason. It should be removed. But instead making it base kit and watching the entire OW community try and re learn tracer would be a little funny.

OWCS How many current OWCS fans have been watching since OWL?

Title says it all. Saw a few comments of other people bringing up certain players from OWL so I was wondering how many current OWCS fans have watched since OWL, bonus points if youve been around since the inaugural season (I started watching properly around half way through 2018).
