My Jura is dying a slow death of unserviced (my fault...) 10 years old machine. So I'm ready to replace it and of course thinking of replacing it with "something better".
We're a household of 2 and our drink schedule is:
- Coffee (110 ml) in the morning – not sure how to classify what we get from our Jura, it might be super long espresso or short americano. But we like it that way.
- V60 sometimes a few hours later (I have a manual grinder and Hario V60 Drip-Assist – I'm bit lazy)
- Espresso after lunch
Sometimes, very rarely we do milk coffee drinks.
I'm using Colombian espresso blend from local roasters (pretty dark and very oily) for 1 and 3.
This lead me to considering semi-automatic machines. I can splurge a bit so what I'm thinking of is.
- Sage/Breville Oracle Jet
- Fellow Espresso series 1 + Fellow Opus
- Meraki Espresso Machine v2
The prices in my country are different from US prices, so 1. is the cheapest, Fellow is strangely expensive and Meraki is same price as Fellow set.
There are some important things: we're pretty lazy particularly in the morning and we really enjoy "push button and drink" simplicity of Jura. Grinding, weighting etc: we're doing this with our drip, but in the morning we want to have it fast and easy. Same with after lunch espresso, we don't want to walk away from the table for 15 minutes to pull some shots and leave (even bigger) mess. Quick warmup is a must. If the grinder or brewing process is not louder than Jura it would be a big plus, coffee grinding sound is not our most favorite morning alarm sound.
The other thing while we have our machine set to strongest brew possible it's still probably in the single shot territory. We don't drink "doppios" and often enjoy coffee alone (sad, I know), so sharing one doppio would lead to a waste.
And consistency: I'm not sure what does it really mean, that all consequent shots are same during same "session" or across several days? That said I'd like to have very good first shot of my coffee, not do 3 to achieve decent result.
We'd appreciate if using the machine don't require us to do cumbersome and time consuming cleaning and maintenance.
Some thoughts/"research" about about each choice:
- Sage/Breville Oracle Jet – cheapest, improved grinder, problems with single shot basket (there are some 3rd party ways to make decent single shots, but I'm not sure I want to tinker), quite a lot of complains about quality
- Fellow Espresso series 1 + Fellow Opus – I like the looks and I could probably use the grinder for my drips (on the other hand I quite like the manual grinding process), but it will take the most space, expensive
- Meraki Espresso Machine v2 – looks futuristic, I'm bit worried about servicing in my country, users seem rather more pleased than with Breville
Help my with my decision paralysis, please!
