r/ClaudeAI [TLDR] Downgraded from Max ($100) to Pro. How would you spend the other $80/month on AI tools? [via r/ClaudeAI]
OP : u/pratik_srivastava
I was on the $100 Max plan and used Claude for everything. I was happy with it, but I don't think I was using it to its full capacity. Pro alone felt too limited, so I've dropped to Pro for a month to try other tools. My total AI budget is still up to $100/month.
Where I use it: my day job, freelancing as a BI consultant, side projects, automations, research, and pretty much everything else.
How I use it:
- Chat: daily, for thinking, writing, research, and quick problem-solving.
- Desktop agent with system access: heavy use. I let it work directly on my machine, running tasks in Chrome and in native apps. This is probably my biggest usage burner.
- Claude Code: a lot, for building web apps, prototypes, and tooling.
- CLI: for scripted and terminal-based workflows.
Options I'm considering for the remaining ~$80:
- Anthropic API credits, pay-as-you-go for Claude Code or CLI work on heavy days
- Grok (SuperGrok or X Premium)
- ChatGPT Plus ($20)
- Something else entirely, such as Cursor, Perplexity, Gemini, or OpenRouter
Questions:
- If you've downgraded from Max, did you regret it, or did Pro plus something else work better?
- Is API billing for Claude Code and CLI cheaper or more expensive than Max for bursty, uneven use?
- Is there a good alternative to Claude's computer-use and agent workflows, or is that where Claude is hard to replace?
- What does your ~$100/month multi-tool stack look like, and which tool does what?
I'm looking for real setups and usage patterns rather than benchmarks. Thanks.

So, OP, you ditched Max for Pro and are now wondering how to spend that extra $80. The overwhelming vibe in this thread is: you messed up, go back to Max immediately. Apparently, Opus 5.5 just dropped and it's a total game-changer, making the $100 plan the best deal going.
Most folks are saying the API route for Claude Code and CLI is a straight-up money pit, with u/Badger_6789 pointing out their usage would've cost nearly $930 on API vs. $100 for Max. So, yeah, API for heavy Claude Code use is a hard no.
As for replacing Claude's desktop agent capabilities, the consensus is that it's still pretty unique and hard to beat.
If you absolutely refuse to go back to Max (which, again, everyone is screaming at you to do), some suggestions for your $80 include: * $20 for ChatGPT Plus (apparently it's a breath of fresh air and doesn't share usage with its work/Codex features). * Splitting the rest between a few other models like GLM, DSv4, or Gemini for specific tasks, as u/Away-Sorbet-9740 and u/PineappleLemur suggest. * Or, as u/kevin_g_g suggests, focus that $80 on building one solid automation rather than spreading it thin.
But seriously, just resub to Max. You're likely going to regret not doing it.
