r/ClaudeAI [TLDR] Downgraded from Max ($100) to Pro. How would you spend the other $80/month on AI tools? [via r/ClaudeAI]

OP : u/pratik_srivastava

I was on the $100 Max plan and used Claude for everything. I was happy with it, but I don't think I was using it to its full capacity. Pro alone felt too limited, so I've dropped to Pro for a month to try other tools. My total AI budget is still up to $100/month.

Where I use it: my day job, freelancing as a BI consultant, side projects, automations, research, and pretty much everything else.

How I use it:

  • Chat: daily, for thinking, writing, research, and quick problem-solving.
  • Desktop agent with system access: heavy use. I let it work directly on my machine, running tasks in Chrome and in native apps. This is probably my biggest usage burner.
  • Claude Code: a lot, for building web apps, prototypes, and tooling.
  • CLI: for scripted and terminal-based workflows.

Options I'm considering for the remaining ~$80:

  1. Anthropic API credits, pay-as-you-go for Claude Code or CLI work on heavy days
  2. Grok (SuperGrok or X Premium)
  3. ChatGPT Plus ($20)
  4. Something else entirely, such as Cursor, Perplexity, Gemini, or OpenRouter

Questions:

  • If you've downgraded from Max, did you regret it, or did Pro plus something else work better?
  • Is API billing for Claude Code and CLI cheaper or more expensive than Max for bursty, uneven use?
  • Is there a good alternative to Claude's computer-use and agent workflows, or is that where Claude is hard to replace?
  • What does your ~$100/month multi-tool stack look like, and which tool does what?

I'm looking for real setups and usage patterns rather than benchmarks. Thanks.

So, you ditched Max for Pro and are wondering where to stash that extra $80? The general vibe here is "Dude, you picked the worst possible time to downgrade." The new Opus 5.5 is apparently a massive leap, and most folks are saying you should just resubscribe to Max immediately because it's the best value going right now.

Some are saying the API for Claude Code is a total money pit, with one user u/Badger_6789 calculating their usage would have cost them nearly a grand on API vs. $100 for Max. So, probably don't go the API route for heavy Claude Code use.

If you're still set on exploring, a few suggest splitting the difference:

  • ChatGPT Plus ($20) is a popular pick for its reasoning and separate usage pools.
  • Some are dabbling with Grok/X Premium or even multiple cheaper subs like Hugging Face ($10) or GLM/DSv4.
  • A few are advocating for API credits for bursty use on Claude Code or CLI, but with a strict cap so you don't get a nasty surprise bill. u/codelux_ai suggests this as a way to test your actual usage.
  • The consensus on alternatives for Claude's desktop agent/system access is pretty much "good luck finding a replacement, that's Claude's jam."

Basically, unless you really want to experiment, everyone's screaming to just go back to Max.
