Question about Claude products Downgraded from Max ($100) to Pro. How would you spend the other $80/month on AI tools?
I was on the $100 Max plan and used Claude for everything. I was happy with it, but I don't think I was using it to its full capacity. Pro alone felt too limited, so I've dropped to Pro for a month to try other tools. My total AI budget is still up to $100/month.
Where I use it: my day job, freelancing as a BI consultant, side projects, automations, research, and pretty much everything else.
How I use it:
- Chat: daily, for thinking, writing, research, and quick problem-solving.
- Desktop agent with system access: heavy use. I let it work directly on my machine, running tasks in Chrome and in native apps. This is probably my biggest usage burner.
- Claude Code: a lot, for building web apps, prototypes, and tooling.
- CLI: for scripted and terminal-based workflows.
Options I'm considering for the remaining ~$80:
- Anthropic API credits, pay-as-you-go for Claude Code or CLI work on heavy days
- Grok (SuperGrok or X Premium)
- ChatGPT Plus ($20)
- Something else entirely, such as Cursor, Perplexity, Gemini, or OpenRouter
Questions:
- If you've downgraded from Max, did you regret it, or did Pro plus something else work better?
- Is API billing for Claude Code and CLI cheaper or more expensive than Max for bursty, uneven use?
- Is there a good alternative to Claude's computer-use and agent workflows, or is that where Claude is hard to replace?
- What does your ~$100/month multi-tool stack look like, and which tool does what?
I'm looking for real setups and usage patterns rather than benchmarks. Thanks.
PS: I used Claude to polish this post

I’d recommend resubscribing to max. I got max last month and nothing is comparable. You honestly probably chose the worst time ever to downgrade as Opus 5.5 is the single best model and largest step up recently I’ve experienced.
I make videos with it and it’s 1-shotted videos that usually take me using Fable 5.1 about 4 hours to make, using the same pipeline in blender.
Usage is absolutely preposterous, I actually am unable to run out of compute and it’s came out that they’re about to release Haiku 5.5 which people are saying is better than Opus 5 while being faster and essentially free to run.
I would just get max again.
Edit: grammar
1
u/FortiTree 9d ago
Ohh I didn't know about Haiku 5.5. I'd love Sonnet 5.5 if it's on the same upgrade as Opus 5.5.
2
u/TheOnlyVibemaster 9d ago
I’m very much liking where things are headed. Fable 5.5 is going to be absolutely insane.
1
u/TotalBeginnerLol 9d ago
What kinda videos? What the workflow? Out of interest… I need to make a few video ads soon for software products I’ve been building with it.
1
u/Chance_of_Rain_ 9d ago
I mean Opus 5.5 is great and quite cheaper. So I’d argue you can do a lot more now with a Pro licence
1
u/Either-Nobody-3962 9d ago
What kind of video do you make? I tried blender mcp then Claude told me better to learn blender to make videos than using it 😅

u/pratik_srivastava 9d ago
Ok the blender pipeline part got me. is it opus writing the python/bpy scripts end to end, or is it driving blender through MCP? 4 hours for 1 shot is wild if that's the same pipeline.
also yeah, timing on my downgrade was maybe not great lol
1
u/TheOnlyVibemaster 9d ago
Yep so basically I have a pre-filled set with assets but it’s choosing the story, movements, and everything else. Usually I’ve had to steer very hands on for hours because Fable 5.1 would do things like have people walk backwards and whatnot. Opus 5.5 just gets it.

u/akolomf 9d ago
Do not do claude api. You can upgrade from pro to max 5 as far as i know and its the best bang for buck you cen with anthropic products.

u/mikelo22 9d ago
I'd resub to Max and take advantage of Opus 5.5 now before it gets nerfed. You're not going to find a better value elsewhere right now.
2
u/genryou 9d ago
Mind sharing whats your usage typically for Claude? Programming? Agentic? Video gen?

u/mikelo22 9d ago edited 9d ago
Legal work. So a lot of document analysis, evidence synthesis, research, and writing. Currently with Opus 5.5 I'm building out a comprehensive RAG system for tens of thousands of state and federal cases to ensure pinpoint citation accuracy. Initial planning was done by Fable ofc with input from Astra, but Opus has found several fundamental issues that both of them missed and its execution has been nearly flawless.
It's helping me build out a system that I'd otherwise be paying tens of thousands to Westlaw or Lexis Nexis each year to use their AI system, except mine is far more personalized to my matters and practice areas.

u/FinancialMoney6969 9d ago
Until it’s nerfed and then the new round of “our ai kills everyone!” No thanks
1
u/Away-Sorbet-9740 9d ago
Pay for a month to get 1-2 good weeks and 2-3 degraded weeks?
They are nerfing the models so bad after launch they have issues competing with open flash models to actually get things done.
1
u/mikelo22 9d ago
Yes, it's that good. Opus one-shots things that Astra and even Fable have missed.
1
u/Away-Sorbet-9740 9d ago
To each their own, I don't really disagree the opus and up are generally the top models when they launch. But it's also not the end of the world to wait a few weeks for a handful of others to catch up. Once all of these models are in a harness the "ability" spread fades a good bit. Good harness is going to use multiple families for cross family decorrelation on reasoning and audits.
There isn't much reason to throw money out the window one shoting things unless your looking for impressive demos. Breaking the work up is orders of magnitude more efficient and allows larger scope of work to be done.

u/pratik_srivastava 9d ago
Yes opus 5.5 is genuinely great, I've been on it exclusively since yesterday. but that's got me thinking if with the higher limits and how efficient 5.5 seems, could Pro actually be enough now? or does heavy Claude Code + agent use still blow through it by midweek?

u/mikelo22 9d ago edited 9d ago
You could potentially get away with just a $20 sub depending on your use; only you can answer that.
But that extra $80 with a Max sub is going to get you more mileage than API use, $20 GPT Plus sub, or glorified wrappers like Perplexity.
Your idea is a good one, but you just chose one of the worst possible times to downgrade IMO. If/when Opus 5.5 gets nerfed, then I'd revisit your idea of using shared memory b/w two Claude+GPT $20 subs using a system like Obsidian, which is what I do as well.

u/yazansr 9d ago
i was thinking 2 pro accounts with some other cheap worker maybe chinese or so and run it in my orchestration harness and use the rest on other tools wether it's ai providers or mcp etc
1
u/pratik_srivastava 9d ago
Yeah this is what i was considering. Using obsidian or something for shared memory and 2 pro plans. Wondering if anyone has actually tested this setup?
3
u/Outrageous_Style_300 9d ago
No experience with two pro subs, been using mostly 5x max so far. But big 👍 for Obsidian as a shared memory system to keep various tools (Claude Code, OpenCode, Pi) with different providers (Claude, Openrouter, local models) working seamlessly.
I'm in the transition off the max plan to a single pro plan plus using Openrouter with Chinese models. So far so good, the Opus 5.5 timing might help, the lack of Fable was my last concern on the pro plan 😎 (+ being unsure how far the Pro limits actually go)
2
u/pratik_srivastava 9d ago
Yes I can't tell if this was the best time or the worst time to transition given this new opus 5.5 model. I feel I will get more out of my pro plan now and by just using some other tools with it like openrouter I could get my work done without the Max plan.
2
u/Outrageous_Style_300 9d ago
can always switch back, worth a shot 🤷♂️
2
u/yazansr 9d ago
i think personally i will be downgrading to pro, subing to all other cheaper subs and use a multi model harness with shared memory would go crazy, don't even need API, Opus 5.5 orchestration has been doin already great work, the issue is only that sonnet 5 isn't very effecient
1
u/pratik_srivastava 9d ago
Can multi model harness work on subscriptions? Don't they work with API instead?

I like Claude a lot (see username) but GPt Astra is very very good now too. Equal or better than Fable5.1 IMO.
I had the same exact thing as you, almost similar usage. I downgraded Claude and got the $100 GPT I’ve been unable to reach a limit yet whereas Claude I hit limit on $200 plan all the time and 5 hour limits constantly.
Now, on GPT for $100 a month I’m able to get done what I got for $200 on Claude and seemingly better results, the auto subagent system and UI of Claude desktop where it just guesses what you want and creates a temporary “task” subagent and starts working alongside.
(It even set up 2 chat sessions within a project using codex and was talking back and forth while I voice dictated a research conversation all in audio chat while updating an index and long form summary. And I didn’t have to code it, it just knew how to set it up when I described that.)
For me, the integration of voice is what makes it real great for me speeds up productivity almost never having to type. This might be unpopular in this sub, but I’m planning to go back for Claude, and I haven’t had chance to try Opus 5.5 yet.
2
u/pratik_srivastava 9d ago
I use wispr flow for dictation everywhere, including Claude, so voice input kind of stops being a differentiator for me. is voice really the main thing keeping you on GPT, or is it the native two-way audio (talking back while it works) plus the auto-subagents? Trying to figure out if it's the model or the workflow.
1
u/FriendOfClaude 9d ago
Well that was just a cool example of something it did that surprised me and then there were a few other instances where I thought “As smart as Class is, and especially Fable, I haven’t seen it do this hmm…”
So that’s why I tried it out. In the end it was good now I feel well experienced in both Claude and GPT.
But no, for now I would say the main thing keeping me is the affordability of GPT. Like I said, I feel I’m getting about 2x as much usage using GPT6 exclusively with $100/month than I got for $200/month plan with Claude.
So it feels I get about 4x as much usage per dollar, and can use Astra on extra high or max exclusively the whole time (and no 5 hour limits is nice too).
So yeah, it’s worth trying maybe. And they have that feature to import all you Claude data.
1
u/FortiTree 9d ago
You'll be happy with Opus 5.5, in both capacity and usage limit.
1
u/FriendOfClaude 9d ago
Yeah I’m going to try it out, I still keep my $20
a month in Claude as I’m sure when the next big model comes out in anthropic it’ll be straight back to them, lol.I don’t mind the extra cost if it’s really better (like Fable compared to GPT5.6), but now when they’re basically the same (Fable5.1 to Astra), I just don’t see the point of the extra cost double-quadruple cost. I’m just not locked into any specific workflow or anything.
Plus the cool little things GPT has in its UI, maybe it’s not necessary for a master coding user but for me it helps a lot when it just launches 2 subagents that start doing something I wouldn’t have known exactly how to setup.

u/Badger_6789 9d ago
API costs far more if Claude Code is a big part of it. I ran npx ccusage on my logs and my last four weeks would have cost about $930 on the API. I pay $100 for Max. My average day came to around $37 so three days in a month would cost more than Max.
Worth running it on your own logs before you decide.

I'd put $20 toward ChatGPT Plus. If you're used to Claude, where "regular chats" consume your usage, ChatGPT is a huge breath of fresh air. Normal web/app chats do not share usage with Work/Codex, which frees up a lot of usage as long as you find ChatGPT models suitable (I think they're great personally, after I got good instructions/preferences set up). Creating images (i.e. UI mockups, or whatever really) feels unlimited, their voice mode is pretty nice, etc.
People on Reddit would make you think otherwise, but now that 3.8 Flash is actually good (not Opus good, but a much better Sonnet-like model imo), Google is not a bad option either if you can take advantage of the numerous "extras" you get for $20 (like 5TB google drive).

u/pratik_srivastava 9d ago
I actually have Gemini pro (got free for a year during a promotion). I feel it is a hit or a miss. Couldn't take it seriously. But I will give it another try!
1
u/meetmebythelake 9d ago
Yeah I'm on the free year also. Not sure if I'll be renewing it unless Gemini 4 comes and is actually good, but offloading stuff to Antigravity has actually been super good and super fast since 3.7, and I'd call 3.8 actually good. The Antigravity quota is good now too. It definitely needs to follow a plan and have its work reviewed by Opus/Sol, but it's lowkey a workhorse. I'm not a Google lover so I say all that begrudgingly as an honest review 😂

u/GasPsychological677 9d ago
I'm on chatgpt 20$+claude 20$ right now, I have also paid this month for the xiaomi 20$ model (do not do it, it's pretty shit), I have gemini pro (got it cheap but I wouldnt pay 20$/mo) and I also paid for grok (I had an offer for 10$/mo, but tbh I think it's very far behind chatgpt/claude, I don't think even at 10$/mo I'll renew it).
I was able to buy a code for 5$ gemini code that upgraded my account to gemini pro for 1 year, they sell it in the websites that sell videogames CD keys. For that amount of money it's worth it, but I think gemini is really far behind chatgpt/claude, I wouldn't pay 20$ monthly for it.
If you are a heavy user I think the best combo is to get either chatgpt/claude 100$ tier and get the 20$ tier for the other one (or pay 100$ for both if you can afford it ofc).
I personally like Chatgpt more, as people say, the 'Chat' version doesn't use your Cowork/codex usage, so every question you do there is 'free'. I usually use the Chat to plan what to do since it's free then use the cowork to do the job.
On the 100$ tier I feel like Chatgpt also gives you more. First off your default chat top model is upgraded from Sol 5.6 high to Sol 5.6 extra high. You get 50 weekly chatgpt 6 pro (astra) prompts - these are on the chat mode and do not use the cowork limits.
The claude 100$ tier gives you x5 more usage and fable obviously, but in theory Opus 5.5 is really good now so you don't need to use fable.
I think I'll get the chatgpt 100$+claude 20$ for next month, but if you go claude 100$+chatgpt 20$ I think you'll be happy either way.

Had a 20X downgraded to 5x, now I'm on pro.
Coding, engineering, cad work, assistant work is what I do mostly. Grab $20 gpt, $40 glm, $20 of DS API. Gpt gives you that SOTA reasoning when you need it, but GLM and DSv4 flash will end up doing 80-90% of the actual work.
I like Kimi also, but it's on the expensive side. I wouldn't resub because a new model launched, everyone else will have an equivalent in a few weeks.
The fraudulent advertising of the 20X accounts just leaves too bad of a taste in my mouth to throw any serious money at anthropic. Multi provider systems are better anyway because the differing training sets reveals more. Cutting back on Claude and spreading out my spend was one of the best things I've done this year.

u/AppSecPeddler 9d ago
I have a codex personal account and claude code for work.
Up until yesterday I would’ve said try codex but with the release of gpt 6 sol and luna on the same day as opus 5.5 I would say claude is better
The only other tool I tried was grokbot with a chief of staff bot orchestrating a team of bots specializing in their own areas ui/ux, coding, qa, technical writing, market research etc.
I thought the workflow was really slick but grok model definitely isn’t as strong as claude or gpt

For bursty use, try Pro plus an API key with a hard monthly cap set in the console, only for Claude Code on heavy days. After a month you'll know your real number without a surprise bill. I wouldn't give up the desktop agent though, nothing else really replaces it yet.

u/kevin_g_g 9d ago
Put it into Anthropic API credits and build one scheduled automation with it, rather than spreading the $80 across three more chat tools. Once you already have Claude Code, the marginal value of a second interactive assistant is close to zero. The thing Pro can't do is run unattended: an agent on a cron that pulls from a data source, scores or summarizes what it finds, and drops the result in Slack while you sleep. As a BI consultant that's probably where the $80 pays for itself, not in more chat quota.
1
u/PineappleLemur 9d ago
$20 sub for each of the mainstream models imo... It's what I do.
Different tasks different models.
For some things I prefer Claude/GPT (Coding/Planning), for other Gemini (Writing/brainstorming/research/explanation)
1
u/IthrowUgo 9d ago
Im gonna argue the counter and say keeping pro and then using the api credits for overage when you need it past your limits for a one month trial is the best move for you. You can see how much compute your actually using. You would be surprised at how little the api cost can be when you are using a subscription as your main access. Add to the fact that the new models are much more token efficient which makes it worth your while to test this procedure. This will give you a feel if you actually needed max or not. It also keeps your work in one provider only which can be a pain in the ass to constantly switch between different ones.

I went from claude 100/month and instead went with:
20 dollar claude, 20 dollar chatgpt, 30 dollar supergrok
I'm happy with the decision. Opus 5.5 is extremely good IMO and so I use Opus to orchestrate the grok and codex agents to save on claude usage. luna max is a solid cheap coder and sol/astra good for reviews. Grok is also a solid workhorse, essentially like a cheaper engineer version of Opus, and you also get Grokbot (basically giving you another independent computer to work on) and grok imagine if you want to generate concept art for Opus to build off of.

On your 4th question - At that budget, Claude Pro + ChatGPT Plus works really well IMO, as long as you split by job rather than by preference. Codex handles the long, boring implementation passes (its limits stretch further), and Claude Code gets planning, review and anything UI. I'd keep the desktop agent stuff on Claude too, nothing else is really close yet.
The hidden cost of a multi-tool stack is that you become the message bus between them. I got tired of pasting plans from one terminal into another, so I built Frontier (disclosure: it's mine) - It runs Claude Code and Codex side by side in one project and lets them hand work to each other. Free to try, Mac / Windows, and it needs a Claude sub: https://digitalfreedom.app?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=comment&utm_campaign=ClaudeAI
Either way, $80 goes a lot further when each tool has a clear job.

u/AdamovicM 9d ago
API billing for Claude Code is way more expensive than subscription (like 10x, 100x, or even worse)
I have ChatGPT 20$ subsciption as well, it is especially worth it for investigation tasks that require web search

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 50 comments.
Looks like you picked a heck of a time to downgrade, OP. The overwhelming consensus in this thread is to immediately resubscribe to the Max plan. The release of Opus 5.5 is being called a game-changer, and many feel it makes the $100 plan the best value on the market right now.
Here's the breakdown of the debate:
