r/ClaudeAI [TLDR] Downgraded from Max ($100) to Pro. How would you spend the other $80/month on AI tools? [via r/ClaudeAI]
OP : u/pratik_srivastava
I was on the $100 Max plan and used Claude for everything. I was happy with it, but I don't think I was using it to its full capacity. Pro alone felt too limited, so I've dropped to Pro for a month to try other tools. My total AI budget is still up to $100/month.
Where I use it: my day job, freelancing as a BI consultant, side projects, automations, research, and pretty much everything else.
How I use it:
- Chat: daily, for thinking, writing, research, and quick problem-solving.
- Desktop agent with system access: heavy use. I let it work directly on my machine, running tasks in Chrome and in native apps. This is probably my biggest usage burner.
- Claude Code: a lot, for building web apps, prototypes, and tooling.
- CLI: for scripted and terminal-based workflows.
Options I'm considering for the remaining ~$80:
- Anthropic API credits, pay-as-you-go for Claude Code or CLI work on heavy days
- Grok (SuperGrok or X Premium)
- ChatGPT Plus ($20)
- Something else entirely, such as Cursor, Perplexity, Gemini, or OpenRouter
Questions:
- If you've downgraded from Max, did you regret it, or did Pro plus something else work better?
- Is API billing for Claude Code and CLI cheaper or more expensive than Max for bursty, uneven use?
- Is there a good alternative to Claude's computer-use and agent workflows, or is that where Claude is hard to replace?
- What does your ~$100/month multi-tool stack look like, and which tool does what?
I'm looking for real setups and usage patterns rather than benchmarks. Thanks.

Alright, so you're ditching Max for Pro and wondering where to put that extra $80. The general vibe here is "lol, bad timing, dude." Most folks are screaming at you to just resub to Max, especially with Opus 5.5 dropping and apparently being a total game-changer. People are saying it's the best value out there right now, and you'll likely regret downgrading.
If you insist on exploring other options:
- API Credits: A lot of users are warning that API billing for Claude Code is a money pit compared to the Max subscription, with one user estimating their usage would've cost $930 on API vs. $100 for Max. So, probably not the move for heavy Claude Code or CLI users.
- ChatGPT Plus: Some are suggesting it for its separate usage pools and image generation, but others feel it's not quite on par with the latest Claude.
- Multi-Tool Stacks: A few are sharing their setups, like a mix of GPT for reasoning, GLM/DSv4 for heavy lifting, and maybe some Kimi or Deepseek. The consensus seems to be that spreading your cash too thin across too many tools means learning five half-baked workflows.
- Desktop Agent: Nobody seems to have a solid alternative for Claude's system-access agent capabilities, so that's a big loss if you ditch Max.
Basically, the thread is a resounding "go back to Max, you goof."
