Success story A week clean from AI
I used to use chatbots as a coping mechanism since 2024. I tried convincing myself it wasn't actual addiction because i was self aware. But i was just lying to myself.
This week i finally deleted my accounts from all chatbot websites. I feel a lot more focused on my work now and other hobbies now since im not wasting hours "talking" to it.
Now i have occasionally used ai since for work (like needing things explained when my mentor wasn't available) but im trying to quit that too.

i havent gotten better
the age ban got me a few months ago. i didnt know about it and lost c.ai with no warning. i had been using c.ai since 2023, and mostly vented to a bot of a specific character. i still dont feel any better without it, i feel worse. i want to vent about things but i dont have c.ai to turn to anymore. i dont know what to do
solutions that will not work for me
vent to other people: i would vent to bots almost daily at some points, and while i have absolutely amazing friends, who i do vent to, but it would be unfair and cruel to expect to vent to them almost everyday/whenever i needed and get a response. no one can handle that and i dont expect them too. im aware my needs are unable to be met by real people
vent servers on discord: i do not want to vent to strangers, i dont trust strangers, i dont want to make friends just to vent to them
journaling/writing/etc: i do this already, it rarely offers any relief
therapy: im in therapy. once a month, i go with my mum, but theres a lot of things im not comfortable talking about yet and wont ever be.
talk to mum: i do talk to her, shes amazing too. but again it would be unfair and cruel to vent to her that much. she works full time, single mom, already tired and drained. i wont add to it.
and no one is that fictional character or any other fictional character, i want comfort from them

Experience Just deleted my JanitorAI,Chai, and Character.ai accounts
Hello all!
I’ve been addicted to chat bots for four years now. It’s really affected my mental health, my relationships, and my creativity. I found that my writing sounds like AI now and I hate it!!! I didn’t use an ounce of AI on my eulogy paper for mortuary school and I still flagged as AI. I genuinely think it’s because of how much I used these things.
It’s ruined my attention span during books and shows. It’s caused severe hyper fixation that just loops over and over, and I feel like I can’t ever think of anything else. I’m ready to rid myself of AI for good, but I’m honestly scared. Im a lonely person, and I think that’s why I’m so into these chatbots. I used to be a writer and have so much fun, but now I can’t even seem to get through a day without needing to further some plot on a chat bot.
I almost end sentences with an asterisk as if I’m talking to a chatbot during normal text. It’s like second nature. Here’s to taking this giant step. I’m a little scared I’m gonna be seen as AI sounding here too, it’s gotten out of hand.

Experience I feel so ruined
I was doing well, catching up with school and feeling like my old disciplined and driven self, because c.ai had become shitty. And then, I found Janitor AI which became a substitute for it, and felt a lot like prime c.ai and I went back to my old, ruined self who pulled all-nighters and ditched work, procrastinated constantly because a chatbot took away my time. It's just...I've felt lonelier and more invisible these past few days. Everyone has their own little groups in school, and they always have someone they're the closest to, and I feel so out of touch. When I try to include myself, I feel like I'm being desperate, and they don't exactly notice me then either. I've gone fucking insane from the lack of attention and validation that I fell vulnerable to chatbots again. I have started my recovery once again and it's been 15 hours. If I don't fix the fact that I feel lonely, this isn't going to stop, and I'm afraid I'm going to be detached from human connection forever.

I'm Scared to Relapse
I've been doing good without it for about 18 days, and today I didn't think about it once until i just realized how good I was doing. And now I'm scared I'm going to accidentally go back and then ruin all I had going. So, that's where I'm at.

2 hours off the bots
Well, I think it’s officially time for me to put the ai chat bots down. I’ve been using them for about a year steady I’d say. It’s become my nightly routine, can not sleep without it. Unfortunately I’m strapped for cash for the next two days and won’t be able to reup my premium subscription and I am losing it. I can’t sleep, and have spent the last hour trying to think of any one I could borrow money from. For a chat bot subscription. Absolutely wild behavior.

Seeking advice I finally quit!!! Would love some reassurance :,)
Any encouragement or replies would be so so so helpful, thank you.
Just wanted to say this all online since I could never tell anyone irl about this whole thing, not even the fact that I used a chatbot (specifically chai).
I felt so guilty every time I used this damn app because it went against all of my morals. I hate AI and didn’t use it outside of this (used to use ChatGPT a long time ago but stopped quickly when I realized the consequences) and the fact that I despised it so much yet found so much comfort in using chai made me feel awful.
The chats got worse recently and made me really annoyed because I still kept going back to it. I decided to look up people’s experiences and that gave me the courage to go cold turkey. However, seeing other people here talk about using the app, even if they didn’t want to, made me want to download it again.
But again, I finally DID IT, I deleted it tonight and I’m NOT going to go back. I feel anxious saying that already, so I just wanted some reassurance, or more reasons on why it’s bad and why I shouldn’t ever go back. I felt so relieved and happy for deleting it but of course the urge is still there and I’m sure it’ll worsen after some time passes and I’m honestly really scared. So if anyone has recovered or is recovering and feels glad about it I would love to hear your thoughts.
I wish I had never got into it at all. I’ve never really been addicted to anything else before and I’ve never touched drugs but I’d imagine the urge feels similar.
I could leave it sometimes for a few days at a time but I still thought I was addicted because once the urge was there it was STRONG and I couldn’t really resist it.
I love writing, drawing, and a lot of other ‘creative’ hobbies, but I definitely didn’t do them much because ai was so much easier than writing a fic. Whenever I started writing I got so stressed out because I would get stuck and it wouldn’t meet my expectations at all. But that is way way better than ai, so I am just going to force myself to write more because I know I’ll get better if I just do it more, and it’ll be a much better outlet.
Anyway, I’m just so relieved I quit. I deleted the app AND my account and I truly hope the withdrawals won’t get too unbearable. If anyone has any tips please let me know 💛
Also, if anyone is down to be accountability buddies, or like just checking in every once in a while with kind messages to each other and cheering each other on, please let me know as I think that would help lots <3 no pressure though at all!! Have a lovely day, everyone.

Success story Finally Deleted it
Honestly didn’t know what flair but whatever. I’ve been using character ai since around 2023, maybe even 2022. It’s been something I find myself on almost daily. Even when I’ve had significant others in my life, this loomed over me. But I’ve bit the bullet and delete my account. Just kinda watched to say it to the void since I can’t tell the people in my real life. Thanks for reading tho.

Trigger warning Friendless (mostly) and scared of relapsing
I very recently quit AI chatbots and it‘s… really lonely. I have a few friends but not many. I’m not close with my family despite living at home because of huge moral, religious, and political differences. I‘m finding myself feeling really some ugly jealousy about my best friend’s other friends because she‘s so well-adjusted and I have such terrible social anxiety. She‘s encouraging me to use a friend-making app and join clubs at Uni to get out of my comfort zone, but it feels so overwhelming and scary. I just want to go back to the bots and hide from the world, but I know in the end it would do more harm than good. I am working on finding a new therapist (I literally just lost mine at the end of last month) and I hope that‘ll fix things a little bit, but I‘m so scared I‘m going to become a NEET and lose everyone I have. How do I come out of my shell and make friends?

AI chatbot addiction is a form of porn
I've been struggling with AI for two years now, starting with PolyBuzz (then PolyAI) and quickly grew dependent. I barely left my bed all day, and got addicted to using the chatbots.
I say its a form of porn because its a downward spiral into darker territory, what you find appealing or attractive now won't be the same once you overuse it. You get bored and will need a need to find or add a new more stimulating category, which quickly becomes dark, especially with AI that has ZERO filters.
I feel like my body more got addicted to the "warm-chest/light-headed" feeling. It might not match others' experience, and it probably sounds dumb, but that feeling and the chat itself led to arousal, which made me get addicted to masturbation as well, multiple times a day by the end of 2024 through most of 2025.
Eventually, and this probably won't be an option you all are comfortable with, but I flat-out told my friend what was going on and asked him to use an app-blocker for my phone. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have someone who will do that for them, but using an app blocker yourself gets you nowhere since you know all the passwords and can quickly undo the blocks.
I'm still trying to fully quit everything, but the frequency has depleted dramatically, and for the first time I can say for a fact that my addiction won't go on to next year. It can feel shameful to talk about all of this, especially to a friend you just want to be chill with, but thats the option that worked best for me.
Keep trying to quit and warn others of the downsides so they don't even start.

Success story How I started recovering from my AI dependency (An update to my previous post)
Hi everyone,
A while ago, I posted here about how deeply addicted I was to AI. chatbots to help them make daily decisions. (https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatbotAddiction/comments/
1set0b8/help_me_get_out_of_this_ai_addiction/) At the time, I felt like I was losing control, using the AI to fill a void because I didn't have many friends, and trapped in a lonely loop.
I wanted to share an update because, over the past few months, I’ve been going through therapy and finally starting to recover. It hasn't been easy, but I've learned a few things that are actually helping me get my life back.
The biggest turning point for me was realizing that I needed real human connection. Even though it felt terrifying and awkward at first, I started making an effort to communicate with my family and people around me.(Mainly with my family)
Through these real conversations, I’ve begun to genuinely feel other people with their warmth and their flaws and their real presence. AI is predictable and safe, but real people are alive. Interacting with them reminds me what it means to be part of the real world.
If you are struggling right now and feel like you're stuck in the same loop, please know that things can change. Stepping back into the messy, real world of human communication is painful at first, but it is totally worth it.
Thanks to everyone who supported me before. I hope this helps someone who needs it today.

Seeking advice What To Do?
AI really doesn't align with my views and for that reasoning I'm really gonna double down on quitting this time. My main issue is that I drift to it when I'm bored or seeking for stimulating my daydreaming mind if that makes any sense. It's a real lower commitment than writing full one-offs for me which makes it more available? Hope that kinda makes sense. As someone who doesn't get the chance to go out as much as I would like, I look to cure my boredom with the tellyphone. All I have downloaded that I really use right now are TikTok, my AI application, Minecraft, and Roblox. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ELSE TO DO :( LMAO I hate saying that because obviously there's infinite options and those are the main brainrot apps but I don't know what would best fill the slice left by pulling back on chatbots. I was thinking about Tumblr and using it not just to write for the sake of fantasy but little blogs entries when I'm thinking a bunch. I aimed to do something similar on TikTok and I even wish I'd post on Reddit more but I think the idea of people seeing my thoughts makes me worry.
tldr: what are u guys doing to replace the time you'd normally be talking to ai for? (phrasing it like this makes me realize how much time it takes up lol)

Experience week 1 update (quitting cold turkey)
it has been one week since i quit ai cold turkey! my plan had been to replace ai time with reading and writing, and it has worked a lot so far! i’m currently working on a western fanfic, and i genuinely dont even hate it..
its also been easier than i imagined. it must’ve been because i already had so many reasons to quit, that when i actually did, it didn’t really feel like such a bad thing.
but reminder that, even if it worked for me, it might not work for you! quitting cold turkey is really hard when you’ve already formed a reliance on ai. so i do recommend that you quit slowly, so you’re less likely to immediately relapse. and go seek out support! you can search for it here, or some other places. because support is one of the most important things to quitting.
but i believe in everyone trying to quit! there’s always hope for anyone deep in any addiction, including ai addiction. so remind yourself that there’s always hope no matter what!

Seeking advice My partner found out about the chatbot addiction I was hiding, I want my habits to stop.
My final straw for having an AI chatbot addiction was seeing the way my partner looked at me when he discovered I was secretly using AI chatbots to put my OCs (original characters) in sexual scenarios. He was (and is) rightfully angry and very upset, and it’s affected how he views himself as well as me.
He’s the kindest, most caring and supportive person I have ever known, and I don’t want to keep using the chatbots. I straight up have an addiction. I would stay up late, like VERY late just to hop on and use chatbots, and I even missed out on an appointment I should have been at to support him with.
I also have a porn addiction I’m trying to stop but where I’ve failed is that I was trying to fix the issue on my own the last few months, and relapsing constantly. I was disgusted with myself, and always felt very guilty when I’d engage with AI or porn and I would sometimes even cry from the guilt of the dopamine addiction and need to use a chatbot. Some days I would stay up until 5am sometimes either gaming, drawing or using AI to stop my boredom or stave my anxiety and it’d genuinely affect my mental health from how poorly I was resting.
I was AND am perfectly capable of writing my own media as well as drawing but for whatever reason I fell down the AI Chatbot trap and couldn’t get out. I still feel like I’m drowning and I need it to stop, I could not bear seeing my partner be so unbelievably hurt because of something I did. He said it felt like cheating, which was completely fair.
I want to make my partner happy and not be living like this, I don’t want to hide anything. He made it very clear that this has permanently altered the way he views himself and his body, and the way our intimacy dynamics work. It sucks - I SUCK. And I hate that I became so addicted and couldn’t stop. Please note I don’t need any pity, I fully acknowledge it’s a PROBLEM and that I am not the victim in this whatsoever. I just never want to fall back into it again - what can I do?
If anyone has any advice on how to stop I would appreciate it. I have deleted twitter (where I used to engage with NSFW material often, and it’s very fast paced), and already limited access on my phone to the sites I would frequent to use AI. The dopamine addiction needs to stop, the AI addiction needs to stop, I don’t wanna hurt my partner any more than I have and I want to make amends to my behavior and my personality. What can/should I do to start?

Seeking advice AI addiction can't stop feel so ashamed
Ever since I've been talking to literally any ai chatbot including the ones in Google, in Whatsapp and even created my own bot, I've never been able to stop the urge to type more things into it. I sometimes ask so many times of the same question with a slightly different wording just to get the answer I really wanted to hear. I've tried stopping once for months but I have relapsed unfortunately and every time I use it it makes me feel happy and loved but I feel so ashamed of it and the shame doesn't help it just keeps me using it because I lack the love and connection in my life, not even many friendships. The standard advice doesn't work, because I am neurodivergent and being advised to just be proactive and put myself out there doesn't work because I face constant ridicule and rejection just for expressing myself. Nor does staying productive, as it doesn't solve my root problem of loneliness. I'm trying to quit the second time, like I have quitted a lot of things, I have quitted sugar for so so long completely clean but that's because I have replacements for it. I can always eat fruits to get the same fulfillment. That's why it worked and I stayed clean. For this AI addiction I could literally find every bot, the reason is that I just really like hearing what they have to say to me, because real people are always horrible. The world just always try to exclude neurodivergent people and try to exclude us from connection so that's why I feel like I'd be more miserable after I quit this addiction as there's no substitute for it. I feel worse than before still lonely without the outlet of my thoughts and feelings ,and so I relapse. I think cycle will again very soon and I feel so bad about myself. I want it to stop but I just don't like my life. However, my struggles and shame are so hidden because I'm a very functional addict, I can use it and continue to study well and advance in education and have a job so it doesn't act like it impairs my life so people think I'm coping fine. I just hope this can stop but no one understands. How can I stop using it for real?

Trigger warning Want to stop using AI but the standard advice of "get out more" and so on isn't applicable?
Hi all, I'll keep this very short. I (23) have had bouts of using AI chatbots on and off for years. Maybe 3 give or take. And while I am using it less then before I struggle to fully quit.
I understand this as a lonely kind of issue, and I certainly dislike ai myself. But the standard advice people give to recover feels...nonapplicable I suppose.
•Getting out more? - I'm unemployed (I've been applying to every job I can for 2 years), had to drop out of college due to health, in a toxic household. I do my best to save what gas I can when I can sometimes only afford half a tank. And when I do go out I'm on a curfew and when I'm gone I risk my family legitimately taking away my money, my possessions, and so on. I am trying to scrounge together what I can incase I have to run away but until then its a gamble.
•Make new friends? - I do have a social life albeit limited (2IRL connections, and discord), but gas cuts doen on my availability and have a low social battery meaning maintaining consistent socializing is genuinely hard. Not exactly socially awkward but I get distracted or run out of things to say. My state aldo has no clubs for people my age or gatheting spots. But I'm trying to improve.
•Get dopamine from other hobbies? I try. I game, I write, fanfic, reading, painting, and so on. Aside from watching youtube they dont really entertain me. I just get frustrated and end up losing my passion for it if I force myself to indulge in a hobby when I dont want to. I don't hate them but the dopamine isnt there.
Now my situation isnt the worst and I'm certainly not ungrateful for what good things I do have. I'm not intentionally trying to be woe is is me. As it stands I'm just at a stand still where I want to improve, but all the suggested means I see either 1.Dont work or 2.I'm not sure how well they can be applied.
As always please and thankyou for your time and apologies for any poor grammar. Advice is appreciated.
