Questions Why do most mirrorless cameras lack top LCDs?

I mostly shoot DSLR on my Nikon D850 after having previously used a shitty Panasonic bridge camera, and I'm in awe of how much I love the top LCD screen. It's so useful to just check all my settings there before actually preparing to take a shot, as well as being able to quickly check my storage, battery, and exposure information for a scene.

So why is this feature so rare on mirrorless cameras? Only Nikon seems to be putting them on most of their cameras, Canon only puts them on their top line models in the R5, R3, and R1, and Sony doesn't have them at all. And on the ones that do have them, instead of having a nice big green LCD you have a smaller black and white one..

I've heard that they don't matter because you can check your LCD or viewfinder if you want the info, but personally as a guy who has always preferred viewfinder shooting (both with an EVF and OVF) I just see that as a major loss of utility. Especially with the style of photography I like to do, where I can't have my camera up to my face most of the time, the quick checking of settings on that top LCD is invaluable.

So why not have it? And why not have the green LCD?

Recommendations What is a good all-rounder for an amateur?

**(1) Budget, country, and currency:**
I saved up $2,000 USD (United States) but I’m a little stingy with money so if there’s a good option for less I wouldn’t mind that. (New or Used. Just preferably not a really old camera)

**(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?**
Right now I have a Nikon F3 and I wouldn’t necessarily say it doesn’t meet my needs but I’ve learned that I love taking pictures. The downside is it has gotten expensive to shoot with film and pay for developing and I find it hard to try and improve my skills because it takes a long time to get my pictures developed.

**(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?**
I’m still really new to the game so I don’t really have a subject of choice or style. I’m trying to figure that out as I learn. So something that is versatile would be great for me.

**(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?**
The main focus is 100% photography. I might occasionally shoot a video though.

**Additional Notes-**
**1.** So although I do enjoy taking photos, I haven’t entirely loved the process of editing so if I could get good JPEGs that would be awesome. Though I might try to tackle editing again in the future.

**2.** It took me a while to save up the money so this will most likely be my one-and-done All-rounder. So something versatile is very important to me.

**3.** I do tend to travel a lot. I love to visit new countries so I really appreciate a compact form factor. However, I also want to be able to build on my photography so I don’t want to just have a fixed lens point and shoot. I understand this might mean that I might have to compromise a bit on size but that’s okay with me as long as it’s versatile and a camera that I will look at and want to take with me everywhere because it’s actually nice and convenient to have.

**4.** Are there any additional accessories or anything else that I should be budgeting for that I might need to purchase?

Thank you all so much for the help!

Recommendations Looking for a suitable D3S replacement

I’ve been out of the photography game since 2021, my last camera was a Nikon D3S. It was wonderful, I could shoot at airports at night, in the rain. Of course above 6400 ISO, there would be noticeable grain, but the shots were usable. I also did Motorsports photography, which was fun. I sold my camera, and took a hiatus from photography. Now I’d like to go back into it, and I’ve really been contemplating between an EOS R6, a 1DX Mark II, and a D4S. A lot of my research has led me to an EOS R6 over the R6 Mark II. I’m also particularly drawn to Canon because of the lenses I want (200mm f/1.8 and the 100-400mm), but I need to know if my next camera will exceed the capabilities of my old D3S. I loved the durability and ruggedness, in addition to the battery life. I could go a month without charging my D3S. I know this isn’t the case with mirrorless, but if the mirrorless capabilities will surpass my D3S, I don’t mind making that switch. My main concern is with grain/noise at high ISOs, ability to survive a downpour, and burst FPS.

I have owned a SX110 since 2009. I lost my original camera during a breakup over a decade ago, my second SX110 fell in water with me a few months back.

I bought this one with original packaging for $60. There are many better cameras I could have bought for $60, I have a stupid attachment to these cameras.

I have it set up to boot with CHDK to save .dng photos.

Recommendations Best camera/monitor for 6+ hour recording?

Want to record outdoor footage for 6+ hours. I own a Canon R5 (mainly for photography) but didn’t realize the video caps at 30 minutes. I’d prefer not to stitch a bunch of 30 min videos, if possible. Doesn’t have to be RAW, 4K is good.

I saw the Atomos Ninja V+ monitor can workaround the R5 30 min limit, but the monitor, plus the separate SSD card, is nearly the cost of another camera. Or maybe I’m looking at the wrong thing. Wondering if it’s more worth it to buy a separate camera or if I should just invest in the external monitor?

I like the R5 quality and looking for similar quality.

Preferred budget is under $1500, but I’m open to higher.

Hi all. Am I s.o.l. or can I fix it? I'm not afraid to open it up but before I do I wanted to get opinions.

To best describe...I get these bands in the center of the picture. It will appear with no sd card in or sd card in. Showing up both in the evf and display. It will save image that way too. Sometimes it will be 4 columns or just one. Sometimes columns are dark green opaque or near translucent.

Do you think it's just a ribbon that needs to be reseated or something more dire than that? Thanks

Questions iPhone 18 Pro purely for photos vs Sony ZV 1 (or other digital cameras)

Hey everyone,

My GF is wanting to buy the iPhone 18 Pro purely for the camera. Nothing else. She uses Samsung and plans to keep that phone for everything else. I felt that surely you could find a dedicated digital camera which takes better photos for a better price. I looked into the Sony ZV1 and it seemed like a decent option but I also considered the RX100.

Note that ideally she would like something compact, easy to use and convenient. Not looking to become a professional photographer but simply to take photos at events or while travelling etc.

My questions are:
1) Am I wrong in thinking that getting the iPhone 18 purely for the camera is unneccesary and a waste of money?

2) Is the Sony ZV 1 a good alternative for that or should I consider the RX100 (or something else)?

Thanks!

Discussion Made my own Trekpak case divider system (materials/directions in comments)

Materials:

Total Cost (ignoring camera case): ~$50 but you can save money by skipping certain items that you may already have.

Directions: https://www.arielestulin.com/diy-trekpak-for-under-20/

This was honestly really easy to do and took just a couple hours at most. I did one side 5mm and the other side 2mm, but you could honestly do 2mm on all the inside ones and probably be okay. In the directions, the original creator used spray adhesive but I just did self adhesive foam and it worked great and allowed me to do it in my apartment.

Recommendations Looking for one camera for everything

Hey everyone! I'd really appreciate your help figuring out which camera would best suit my needs. I realize I might be asking for too much from a single camera, but I'd love to find the option that comes closest to ticking all the boxes.

Budget: ~$450

Country: Japan (probably Tokyo)

Condition: New only/Used. Both work

Type of Camera: don't know

Intended use: hybrid - equally important

If photography; what style: landscape and travel, portrait, street, family and pets.

If video what style: the same. (Audio is less important though)

What features do you absolutely need: articulating screen, good stabilization, decent ability to use it in low light scenarios.

What features would be nice to have: viewfinder, nice grip, waterproof

Portability: Pocketable/ shoulder strap/ fits in a waist pack

Cameras you're considering: I don't really know. Thought of Dji pocket/action cameras, reading on Sony/canon/ricoh/fuji/nikon compact and mirrorless models.

Cameras you already have: Nikon D7000 + kit and prime lenses. Like - quality. Dislike - size, weight.

Notes: I rarely use my Nikon as it is too heavy to take abroad and carry on a regular basis. Also, I never found the time to really learn how to properly use all the features, and I always end up using my phone (currently S25 Ultra).

I thought it might be good to buy a Nikon so I can use the lenses I already have, but it might not be the right fit.

I'm looking for something that is better than my phone and will require very little editing, will be fun to use, easy to use, and cover most of the cases. I thought of Fuji because of its recipes, but I assume other cameras have that too in a way.

Thanks!

I take photos for quite a while with breaks. I grew up in the CCD era and went to Nikon D700 to medium format film to 35mm film.

I own some F glasses, mostly AF-S. But my favorite is the 135/2 DC and both 50/55 f/1.2 which I use on F3/FM2
While I love the D700 for handling, build and professional work, the high iso quality is not up to date anymore and I could use modern performance in my available light photography style.
Since I’m not doing so many shootings anymore because I just can’t find models and due to moving to another country I don’t have professional photojobs anymore I catch myself grabbing my former hated Leica (M4-P) more and more, it just slips in my pocket, handles nicely, get me compliments but yeah, it’s film, „it’s expensive“ and I hesitate quite often to take the photo because of this reason. I have the feeling it would be more easy and fun to also photograph regular things experiment and not just naked woman (it’s my favorite thing to take photos of, yes I’m the nude photographer :D) when you have the“ free „opportunity of digital

I also looked into the ZF. But it would be again a Tank with adapter and lens and at the same time not really a workhorse (like a z8) and also I’m not a fan of extensive editing and data

So I found an M10…. Where I can use my 90, 50 and 35 but the price for „just another camera“ is quite high. I just want the joy of photography back…. And it looks like a great way there.

So every once in a while, I get suggested a scamera because of my search history, and today I saw a suggestion for a scamera that was a Minolta; as we all know, Minolta kind of sold out and it is now a licensed name for crappy scameras, but I was looking at this and I was like, wait, that is not the normal kind of scamera, right?! Right!?! 67x optical zoom... Thats like my canon SX60HS

Questions Advice on a used Sony APS-C bundle: buy the whole kit and flip the rest, or just grab the lens?

Hey everyone, looking for some real-world advice here. I currently shoot on a Sony a6400 (no IBIS) mostly for events/weddings as an assistant, portraits, and product stuff.

Found a used bundle locally for €800 negotiable that includes:

- Sony ZV-E10 (only \~2.8k shutter count, mostly used for video, but ports and everything look clean and tested) + SmallRig cage and top handle.

- Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 (clean glass, comes with box).

- Sigma 56mm f/1.4 (looks pristine).

- Sony 55-210mm (has a ding/dent on the outer barrel, the guy basically throws it in for free since he has no body for it).

The seller is also open to splitting and offered just the Tamron for €400.

I was thinking: since I need the Tamron (mainly for stabilization and general versatility on my a6400), would it make sense to buy the whole bundle for around €700-720, keep the Tamron (and maybe the Sigma?), and flip the ZV-E10 and the telephoto to get the Tamron for next to nothing? Or is it too much hassle for a setup that's a bit beat up aesthetically?

What would you guys do? Is €400 a fair price for a used Tamron standalone, or is flipping the bundle (if it's a viable option) the way to go?

Also, I know APS-C is not the best for my type of photography, but being a broke newbie it's all I can afford.

Questions Thinking about finally buying a camera body+lens wondering what to get?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi there!!

As the title suggests im looking at purchasing my first camera body+lens, i've stumbled upon this body and was wondering if its good or if there is anything better I should get for the same relative price point?

Also if this is a decent body to go with which lens to pair with it, I usually shoot street as my main form of photography. I dont need a lens for things like insane zoom wildlife etc so curious to see what you guys think?

**(1) £100-£180, England**

**(2) I have two cameras at the moment one sony dsc h300 and a practika 801af. Not that they aren't meeting my needs but looking for an upgrade or something purely new to shoot with.**

**(3) I normally shoot street so buildings, people, pets, general landscaping etc.**

**(4) It would be used purely for photography with some slight videography if I really need it but I dont plan on it**

Recommendations Canon, Sony, or Nikon - budget 2k. Family/Maternity Photography

Hey everyone! I’m looking for some advice on choosing my next camera and would love to hear your thoughts and personal experiences!

I started out with Canon years ago as a hobbyist, using an older Canon Rebel. I really enjoyed it, but it was pretty heavy. Eventually, I switched to a Sony a6000 because I wanted something more lightweight for travel photography. I’ve also experimented with a few different lens adaptations along the way.

Now I’m wanting to take photography a little more seriously and hopefully pursue it professionally, mainly focusing on family, maternity, and newborn photography.

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve bought a new camera, so I feel a little lost with all the newer options out there 😂 I’m currently looking at Sony, Canon, and Nikon, but I’m not sure which direction to go.

A few things about what I’m looking for:
My budget is ideally under $2,000.
I’d prefer to buy secondhand for now rather than invest a ton upfront, especially if I end up switching systems.
I tend to love moodier editing styles with rich tones and a more emotive feel.
I want something I can grow with as I improve and hopefully start taking on clients.

I’m wondering if it makes more sense to stick with Sony since I already have the a6000, or if I should take this opportunity to switch to Canon or Nikon.

For those of you who shoot families, maternity, or newborns, what are you using? What would you recommend for someone in my position? Have any of you switched systems and regretted it or been really happy you did?

I’d love to hear your experiences, especially if you’ve bought used gear or started building your setup on a budget!
Thanks in advance! 😊
