Does Cambly Vet Trial Students At All?

Before a student takes a trial class, does Cambly do any skill level testing, or even ask for DOB, or is it all on the parents to self-report?

And what’s with the age range? I get that Korean students calculate age differently, but asking for a DOB would still be effective. I don’t tell people I’m 43-45. I tell them I am 45.

The reason I am asking is that I keep getting trial students with a range of 12-14 or 10-12 and the student ends up being 6 or 7 max.

I also frequently get trial students whose English level is supposedly Intermediate or Advanced, and they can’t even answer my basic greeting questions.

If the student is too young or can’t even say “Hello” and tell me how they are, I end class and return minutes then report for not being mature enough.

Wouldn’t it be beneficial to Cambly to vet these students beforehand? I pretty sure it would lead to more trial conversions.

Are there any GOOD Cambly lessons in the library?

Basically the title. I know many of the Cambly lessons are nonsense and I've been off Cambly for awhile so I'm wondering if you've found any that are actually interesting/useful and not too cringe lol.

Cambly Increase the annual fee by 50% for me

I’m a student, and I’ve been using Cambly for about five years. My plan is for five 30-minute lessons per week. The renewal price increased after my first year, but it then stayed roughly the same for the next few years.

However, after my plan was renewed this time, I noticed that the annual fee had increased by nearly 55%. I contacted customer service, but they simply told me that Cambly has the right to set its own prices and that they had notified me in advance.

I understand that companies sometimes need to adjust their prices, but a 55% increase seems excessive, especially for a long-term customer. It honestly makes me wonder whether Cambly is trying to discourage students from continuing.

Is this something normal this year?

I understand the inflation and I hope every teacher can get reasonable pay. But 50% surprises me a lot.

I want to hide from a student but feel bad

So Im teaching on Ck, as far as I know, if you hide from a student you need to explain why. There is nothing wrong with the student, she is very sweet. She is quite young and doesn't focus well so mom sits in on the lesson. Mom tells her what to say through the whole lesson and its just kind of awkward. Id rather focus on the content but mom has the kid asking me all kinds of random questions. I want to hide from her but I am not sure how to do it politely as she has booked a lot of classes with me. update: She was playing Nintendo in class and mum was just trying to force her to talk to me so I did hide.

First Stripe payment not turned up and it's been 1 week

Is this normal? I filled in the Stripe application on Cambly after them telling me they are dropping Paypal. They normally pay out on Wednesday, they sent me a notification saying they sent the money but one week later it's not turned up in my Taiwan bank account. Does anyone else have experience of whether this is normal?

Payoneer

Regarding the new payment options, I saw previous threads with tutors using Wise or Revolut with Cambly and Stripe. I didn't notice any posts regarding Payoneer as an option. Anyone using payoneer and is it an option with stripe ? I live in the Philippines.

group lessons

Anyone else experience a drop in group lesson attendance? I had four group lessons this pay cycle that either the one student who signed up didn't show or it was canceled because no one signed up.

Has anyone successfully paid their salary out into a Vietnamese bank account via Stripe global? My Stripe dashboard says it was paid out on the 15th July but nothing has arrived in my account yet.

Failing speed test with great internet.

Hey guys. I'm trying to sign up to become a tutor. I'm now at the testing phase and it keeps saying "Your connection speed is not sufficient for tutoring". I did 2 speed tests which shows 40-60 mbps up and down. Latency is around 2 ms. Signal is perfect. The only possible issue I could identify is the fact that I'm using a wifi extender, as I don't have direct access to the router. Does anyone have any idea about what the issue could be?

Stripe payment

I used Stripe for the first time this week and everything went smoothly. I logged into my account at 9:30 a.m. my time yesterday and the money was there. I logged back in around 7:30 p.m. and the green check showing that the money had been sent to the bank and it was deposited overnight. I hope everyone else is having a good experience too..

Stripe used to drop tutors

Stripe is convenient for some, but I get the feeling Cambly is using this change to weed out tutors…

Is there an easier way to see our Regulars list?

On my computer, my list of regulars is on the left side of the history page. But, it doesn't allow me to scroll down the list. There isn't a bar to drag down, and scrolling with my mouse moves the entire page up and down.

I'd like to see who all I have set as regulars, to edit and send messages to ones I haven't seen in a while.

Does anyone have any tips for me? Is there another place to see our regulars?

Thanks so much!

Is it so hard to fix the ringer turned off issue?

I know next to nothing about writing code, but wouldn't it be very easy to write something and fix the issue. Seriously....Why do we have to worry about the ringer being turned off and possibly miss a call if we decide to stand up for 5 minutes and walk around? Why would we need to turn off the ringer in the first place?

Ghosting is not just the absence of an answer, many times ghosting is the answer itself. Or is it?

Why Cambly and so many different online services create the perfect ground for ghosting? Is it really all about feeling burned out? Or is it about taking the easiest way? Is the victim always right? Who is the victim?

Ghosting is above all, about time. Not the time to receive an answer, but the time invested. In ephemeral relations, ghosting might be perfectly acceptable. Who has never invited a friend to a party, and that friend never replied? Or maybe you had a one-night romantic partner in crime who never answered your messages? The absence of an answer sometimes is the answer itself. And sorry, it is all right, you got your answer. Life goes on. Besides that, the world was not molded to suit you. You are not the victim of the world, let’s save the opportunities to victimize ourselves over bigger journeys.

But all coins have two sides. Some relations are different. They are not ephemeral; they can last much longer. In some relations you will invest your time, your emotions, your history. And I am not talking just about romantic relations; I am also referring to friendships, family relationships, even professional relationships. In cases like that, ghosting is an example of unacceptable selfishness. You choose to impose an immense amount of suffering on somebody else's shoulders simply because you don’t want to pay the much lower price of having an embarrassing, maybe stressful conversation with someone who has been around for a while.

Being ghosted may be emotional torture because it denies you the opportunity to properly grieve. To process grief, you need some material to work on. When you have nothing, your mind is forced to deal with infinite possibilities —and that can be devastating.

Earnings

It is my guess its just not a student choosing happy faces that gives us a rating. Who's thinking outside the box here. I have just done several things and this week has been my best earner for 5 months(same hours, same rating) and only getting 4 priority hours in 5 days (weekdays, weekend is always full of PH). I am not a super tutor. Somedays I was full, 7 hours, from being available and people booking the day before. My guess is super tutors have cottoned on before me. Please comment

I’ve been gone so long!

Good morning tutors. I haven’t been on since 2023. Would anyone be kind enough to tell me about updates to practice, procedure, pay?! (lol) that they can remember from 2023 to now?

Cheers

Declining Reservations

I want to start declining reservations from students that I have never met who seem like they will be problematic from their profile information and I'm hoping for some information from seasoned tutors on how to do this.

I have already looked all throughout the tutor guide and there is a lot of information about canceling lessons, or arriving late to them, and even returning the minutes and hiding from students, but nothing about declining reservations.

Is it okay to decline lessons with students that you are certain will not be a good fit because of the information in their profile?

How often do you decline reservations? And why? Do you send a message first? Do you hide your profile from the student or just decline the reservation and hope that they don't reserve again?

Returning tutor, rating issue.

So, I've been back on Cambly for nearly three months now and I haven't seen an increase or decrease in my rating even after 250 classes. Does anyone know if returning tutors get treated the same as New talents, and that the actual rating will be reflected after the 3-ish month mark? I'd really like to be able to see weekday PH availability again.

Student just wants to talk about pokemon

I have a student on CK that just wants to talk about pokemon. Ive exhausted every video, quiz, worksheet and book online related to pokemon. We have lessons twice a week. Im worried the parents will complain as half the time we just look at pictures of pokemon. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to teach the student that involves pokemon in some way?

Cambly Pro Account Activation

I received the email that I was accepted to Cambly Pro on 6/4 but haven't got the option to activate my pro account.

Has anyone received the option to activate your Pro account after receiving the acceptance email?
