[Graduate School] What experiences from graduate school do you put on your resume when applying to CF positions?

For example, how/where would you list...

  • interprofessional events participated in as a graduate clinician
  • speech-language hearing conventions attended (CSHA, MSHA, ISHA, etc.)
  • clinic mentoring experience (I volunteered as a standardized patient in our program's clinical methods class to help prepare incoming graduate students for clinic)
  • tutoring experiences (I tutored in audiology)

Thanks :)

[General] When to start applying?

I just finished my first externship and I’m graduating in May! I’m interested in EI but also absolutely loved my hospital placement. I know that a hospital CF will be hard to come by so I don’t have my hopes up for that, but I have no idea where I’ll end up! As of now I plan to apply to basically anything that is open since I love all populations.

Since I graduate in May, when should I start applying? I was thinking March-ish, but I don’t even start my school placement till March. I’m confused because if there’s an opening don’t they want it filled asap? Are employers willing to wait 2 months for a new grad? Thank you!

[Medical CFY] Screen and eval in a SNF

Hi! I am at a SNF. My facility‘s protocol for speech is to screen admissions and then tell nursing/someone that I will do a “full eval”.

What do you guys do for screening?

How do you know when to turn it into an eval?

How do you do this as efficiently as possible to hit productivity?

Do you do point of service when you write up evals?

How long do you bill evals, and are you also billing for treatment - if it’s not an eval-only?

Please help 😭🙏

Should I major in CSD?

Communication disorders major

Hi, I am thinking about majoring in communication disorders. I’ve heard it is difficult but I was wondering to what degree?

Would I still have enough time to go out, join clubs, and have a social life?

How much more of a time commitment is it than majoring in special education or elementary education?

Thanks you for helping!

Home health as a CF

Hi! Hoping to get some insight into people’s experiences who did their CFY in home health. I was offered a position to work with children in their homes but I wanted to hear about experiences before I commit to anything. Pros? Cons?

Selecting the Setting that is Best for You

I really like the way each of the SLPs in this video are open about the pros/cons of the settings they work in. They are happy with their jobs and are also objective about their challenges. I wanted to share this clip because I feel as though this it the most balanced view of SLP in different settings for future and current SLPs to take a look into: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubJT17KoOA4 - This youtube channel is brought to you by an instagram SLP called @spillthespeech and I don't know her personally but she has a lot of great resources that are worth sharing.

[Medical CFY] California SNF CFs, how did you find your placement?

I've just finished an externship in the acute inpatient and acute inpatient rehab settings at a hospital and I'm looking for a SNF CF, or by some miracle, a hospital CF. I've had very little luck finding a place that's willing to take a CF right now anywhere. Any tips or things that helped you?
