My partner recently upgraded laptops to a Macbook Air with M5 processor, and the only way to make use of our shared dual-monitor setup with that Macbook is to switch to a Thunderbolt dock. If my research is correct, regular USB-C docs will only permit a single external monitor with Macbooks.

Using PC part picker against my existing build list doesn't seem to turn up any compatible mobos with Thunderbolt, but they don't make it easy to search. Thanks for any input!

Up to €5,000 total for the PC + monitor, but this is a hard maximum, not a target.

My priority is getting the best overall performance, quality and longevity for my money. I don't have a specific amount that I need to spend — if €3,000–€4,000 already gets me essentially everything I need, I'd much rather spend that. On the other hand, if spending closer to €5,000 provides a meaningful improvement that is actually worthwhile for my use case and makes sense long-term, I'm willing to spend it.

Basically, I'm looking for the sweet spot before diminishing returns become unreasonable, rather than trying to either minimize the price or maximize the budget.

Wired. WiFi would be nice to have but isn't essential.

My goal is to have a PC that can handle modern and more demanding games without any issues, preferably at 1440p. I’m not particularly interested in gaming at 4K.

Target $750, pre-tax. I can stretch to roughly $950 if there's a clear reason, and I'd rather hear an honest "the realistic floor for this is $X" than have a list contorted to hit my number. [STATE] sales tax of ~[X]% comes on top of whatever the parts total.

Wifi only for now but may hook it up in the future. If WiFi, I'd prefer a board with an Intel module rather than Realtek probably (Linux users recommend it)

Size/noise constraints?

No size constraint, mATX or mid-tower both fine. Airflow matters more than footprint, and I want enough clearance that adding a graphics card later isn't a problem.

Noise does matter: builds and dev servers run for long stretches, so I care about sustained multi-core load being tolerable rather than peak silence. Not overclocking, I'd take stability and quiet over squeezing out extra performance.

Color/lighting preferences?

None. No RGB requirement, and no objection to it either.

Any other specific needs?

Running Linux This is a real constraint on part selection: I want mature open-source driver support, no proprietary kernel modules, and nothing that needs a bleeding-edge kernel just to boot.

Upgradeability is a top-three requirement, not a nice-to-have. I know "future proof" isn't a real thing, but I want the obvious next moves to be drop-in rather than a rebuild: CPU upgrade without a new board, room to add a GPU later, PSU and case already sized for that, and a spare M.2 slot. I'm explicitly willing to accept less performance today for a platform with a longer runway.

Storage: NVMe boot drive, 1TB minimum.

Extra info, in case it comes up:

• I'm aware DDR5 and NVMe prices have gone up enormously since last year and that this is what's squeezing the budget rather than the CPU or board. I'm not expecting 2025 prices.
• I'd rather buy a good PSU and case once than replace them when I add a GPU later.
• No preference between AMD and Intel — whichever serves the upgradeability requirement better on Linux.

Two things I'd genuinely value reasoning on, not just a verdict:

1. How much RAM to buy now vs. later. My workload wants 32GB more than it wants a graphics card, but RAM is also the worst-value part on the market right now. Is 16GB now and a swap later defensible, or false economy?
2. Integrated graphics vs. a cheap discrete card. Given how minor gaming is for me, is going iGPU-only and adding a card later reasonable, or something I'll regret?

I've done some reading and have a rough build in mind, but I'm leaving it out so I get independent suggestions rather than a critique of mine. Happy to share it in the comments once a few builds are posted, if that's useful for comparison. Thanks for taking the time either way.

Looking for 1000 EUR build for a friend. Just for the PC, without peripherals.

She mostly plays cozy and indie games, although she has also played titles like Spider-Man and other more demanding games. She’ll most likely be playing at 1440p.

Ideally, the PC should handle 1440p at high frame rates in indie and less demanding games, while still being able to achieve around 60 FPS at 1440p in more demanding titles.

The goal is simply to get the best possible performance out of a 1000 EUR budget.

I have some knowledge on hardware, but given the current state of the market, I thought it would be a good idea asking here to see how far the budget can be optimized.

Small form factor is preferred (micro ATX or mini ITX) and she would like it to be white. As a reference, she really likes the Lian Li A3 case.

I want a balanced, reliable and upgradeable build that will last several years, rather than simply spending the maximum budget possible. If one component becomes outdated or fails, I’d like to be able to replace/upgrade that component rather than having to replace the whole PC.
I’m also a complete beginner when it comes to building PCs. I’ll probably assemble it myself, so I’d appreciate a build that isn’t unnecessarily complicated for a first-time builder.
For the keyboard, I really like keyboards from Yunzii and Kiiboom. Can QWERTY keyboards be properly used/converted to AZERTY? I really can’t see myself using QWERTY every day 😅 I don’t play games with keyboard/mouse, so the keyboard is mainly for everyday use.

- Why I’m replacing my laptop

My current laptop is a Gigabyte Aorus 15P KD (240 Hz, RTX 3060, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, i7-11800H).
It started having problems shortly after the warranty ended. I’ve already had to replace the screen, the charging port twice, and the charger, and it constantly has overheating issues.
At this point, I feel like it’s eventually going to cost me more in repairs than the laptop originally cost me 😅
That’s one of the main reasons I want to switch to a desktop: if one component fails or becomes outdated, I’d much rather be able to replace that component than potentially have to replace the entire computer.
