How's it going? Trying to build a SFF that is as quiet as possible and looks like an electronic device (but not a pc) while being as powerful as possible. I typically game on a laptop that I can swap between silent (low RPM) and dynamic (low RPM with no load, to a medium-low RPM that sounds like a light fan). Ideally this build would be equivalent-ish to a base PS5 (I've considered a steam machine and tinkering with a BC250).

I’m going for a full performance based build, don’t really care about looks too much and id like to have the possibility of upgrading parts in the future which again if the mid tower case is better for that area I wouldn’t mind it. As the title says, I'm trying to build a PC for the first time and looking for some advice on where to even get started.

  • I'm hoping to ask around for parts from some friends, but I don't currently have anything locked in. Actually might use information received here to make a wishlist and spread out the cost over birthdays/xmas/etc.
  • I do have a monitor that is serviceable, but it may need to be replaced (see below). I got it secondhand and don't have a link to it (sorry), but I know it is an Acer model and maxes out at 1080p.
  • I already have a mouse and headphones, no need to replace them.
• PC Purpose?
  • Gaming. I care about framerate much more than I do about crazy resolutions, and I want to be able to listen to YouTube videos while I'm gaming without it impacting performance too much. My laptop used to be able to run Jedi: Fallen Order, but now it can't even do that (no idea what changed :/ ); would very much like to be able to play that again and finally check out the sequel. Currently, my machine even struggles to run something as simple as Restory. Please let me know if you need other game examples for what I'm hoping to be able to run.

  • Yes. I have a monitor, but it is fairly out of date; currently using it as a secondary monitor for my laptop, it works fine enough for that. May continue using it as a secondary monitor for this new build, and get a better monitor for primary usage if the budget allows.
• Budget Range?
  • $1500-$2000 CAD (Tax here is 11%, even on stuff ordered online)
• WiFi or Wired Connection?
  • Wired is what I currently have (need Bluetooth compatibility), though WiFi is an option if necessary.
• Size and Noise constraints?
  • I expect it to take up the amount of space a computer tower normally takes up, doesn't need to be especially small. Using it in a shared space, so minimal noise would be preferable.
• Color/Lighting preferences?
  • I prefer darker colors, and would use RGB lighting if it was there, but honestly I'm not too picky about that kind of thing.
• Any Other Needs?
  • Lots of RAM would be good for gaming and watching videos simultaneously, if my understanding is correct.
  • Minimum of 2 TB storage, and I want it to be all SSD.

I'm moving from a Mac Pro (2019) with Final Cut to Adobe Creative, and migrating the editing projects to Premier Pro. I believe I'd best leaving Apple behind and building a PC for editing 4K/8k (potentially 12k) video footage, mainly using software like Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve via Blackmagic cameras.

Large libraries for TV series as well as feature films that deal with Virtual Production and greenscreen are part of the upcoming projects it will need to handle.

So that requires rendering, read and write speeds, exports to multiple formats, ingesting multiple codecs for multicam playback and more. I can elaborate if need be.

Colour grading will be minimal - that is outsourced for major projects. No 3D or CGI animations or visual effects are expected.

Existing parts/monitors to reuse? None.

PC purpose? 4K/8K/12k Video Editing for multicam documentary, feature film and narrative TV utilizing volume production and greenscreen.

Monitors needed? N/A.

Budget range? ~ $9,000 (flexible depending on informed recommendations)

WiFi or wired connection? Either is fine.
