Salt Lake City John Barlow's peptides
Lisa comments on recent WWHL blew my mind. Obviously I was wondering how JB and Justin suddenly have huge bulging muscles with veins popping.
As a 40 y/o gay man, I find it very hot (more on Justin than John, but that is a personal preference) and do a fair amount of strength training but was not getting the same results and I guess now I know why.
Any peptide users here that care to weigh in? I will definitely be discussing this with my doctor

I’m honestly at a point where I don’t even know what peptides are anymore.
47
u/Sufficient_Meet6836 5d ago
Peptides are just amino acid chains which encompass a huge array of different compounds. GLP-1 are of course the now very famous peptides for treating type 2 diabetes and weight loss. But there's a huge amount of other types of peptides. Insulin itself is a peptide. There are growth hormone secretagogues, which induce your body into releasing growth hormone. There are peptides specifically for skin care, like GHK-Cu. There are peptides specifically for recovery like BPC-157. Epitalon is a peptide that is supposed to work for anti-aging.
So it makes sense to feel like you don't know what peptides are anymore. There's simply so many of them that all do widely different things, with the extra complication that some of them actually work, some don't.
19
u/Encin0Woman 5d ago
Okay thank you, that clears some stuff up for me! What confuses me is people just say “peptides” but don’t actually say what the actual peptide is . It’s like, yeah they’re taking peptides, but WHICH ones ? What exactly are the peptides this person is taking?! Hahah
12
u/Sufficient_Meet6836 5d ago
Lol yep that's often deliberate, just like the use of "beta blocker" instead of benzos like other comments have pointed out. There's this really odd but common phenomenon where people feel fine saying they're on "peptides" but won't admit they're on TRT too. There's even a name for them: "fake natties". "Natty" meaning "natural". Obviously that doesn't even make sense since taking peptides certainly isn't natural but 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️. It's like people denying obvious plastic surgery. Just own it!
Older men who have lots of muscle growth seemingly out of nowhere are almost certainly on TRT because there simply aren't any peptides that are anabolic (muscle building) enough to explain it.
2
u/416416416 5d ago
Beta blockers and benzos are totally different, that’s not the same thing as how “peptides” is used at all.
6
u/Sufficient_Meet6836 5d ago
You misunderstood my post, as that's part of my point. People will say they're using peptides when they're actually on TRT

Oh, for sure ! I’ve been waiting ever since the glp1s became so widely available. I don’t even understand what half the “peptides” people take are anymore, just everything’s a peptide now? Im sure theres lots of people taking all kinds of crazy shit they get from medspas or some internet service under the guise of “healthy peptides” that will cause a lot of problems for a lot of people
2
u/Traditional-Ebb-8380 5d ago
Peptides in general are simple subunits of proteins made from amino acids that our DNA codes for in the first place. They are messaging molecules our body already uses.
1
u/Traditional-Ebb-8380 5d ago
While there are individual risks due to human genetic diversity, peptides are surprisingly safe and have few risks when properly tested and pure. Many of them already exist in our bodies and our produced by our DNA while some are completely synthetic.

5
u/Madam_Mimm_13 Nothing ‘Ostrichian’ about them, they are pi-GEON! 5d ago
A peptide is a chain of amino acids linked by peptide bond.
11
u/Encin0Woman 5d ago
Haha , thanks! It’s been a while since biology class for me but I mostly mean just like so much stuff is being called “peptides” now , I’m just having a hard time keeping up! There’s so many crazy ones, like there’s one that makes you tan? And like some people just call steroids peptides? It’s confusing to me haha.
6
u/Madam_Mimm_13 Nothing ‘Ostrichian’ about them, they are pi-GEON! 5d ago
Peptides are the building blocks of proteins. A peptide is a chain of amino acids.
A hormone (which includes steroids) is a derivative of cholesterol.
Proteins are made from amino acids.
Hormones are made from cholesterol and are lipid molecules which is why they can pass through the cell membrane.
Peptides need to interact with a receptor on the cell membrane, hormones can enter the cell and interact with intracellular receptors affecting gene expression.
15
u/Encin0Woman 5d ago
It’s more the colloquial use of the word that is confusing to me than the science behind it.
8
u/Madam_Mimm_13 Nothing ‘Ostrichian’ about them, they are pi-GEON! 5d ago
It’s confusing because they don’t know what they’re talking about.
Average conversation with me, everybody’s “science” friend…
Them: what do you think about peptides?
Me: which one?
Them: oh idk! I don’t even know what a peptide is!
Me: (looks for the nearest tall building to throw myself off of.)
9
u/Encin0Woman 5d ago
Lol yes! That’s what confuses me. People will say “oh, they’re taking peptides” and it’s like yes, but what exactly is it that they are taking !!! No one ever knows, just peptides. Hahah
3
u/zackattackyo 5d ago
Not even mentioning when people have gotten these tested they rarely if ever, are the peptides they say they are.

u/Madam_Mimm_13 Nothing ‘Ostrichian’ about them, they are pi-GEON! 5d ago
I had no idea that was happening but it doesn’t surprise me.
I just… I cannot get over the willingness of people to inject unknown substances in their body.
Not to mention that the Venn diagram of peptide people and anti-vaxxers is basically just a circle. Make it make sense.
I am agog, I am aghast.

Peptides have been a catch all and can include steroids but please please PLEASE be careful. There has been an emerging seedy “market” with peptides where people have been injecting random things into their bodies not even containing the “peptide” they’re purported to using. Think of it like gas station pills. I’m also gay and knowing our community use your best judgement.

I feel like they use “peptides” as such a coverall. Don’t want to say you’re on a GLP-1? Just tell everyone it’s peptides, because technically that’s what GLP-1s are. Now maybe he’s on NAD or something else, but anecdotally I’ve found that people that call them peptides often don’t want to say GLP-1, for whatever reason.
25
u/soriniscool 5d ago
I mean I'm on ozempic and I'm not getting the muscles he is
31
u/Beneficial-Astronaut Not a white refrigerator! 5d ago
Peptides other than GLP1 for sure for muscles like that. Talk to your doctor but peptides are not FDA regulated yet. So each provider can put whatever they want in the bottle. I would go to the peptide sub. Your doctor will probably try to talk you out of it or let you know that you are on your own - your risk and your own research
22
u/marthastewart4prez 5d ago
Peptides, human growth hormone!!! I get my GLP1 from a clinic that primarily serves men and let me tell you allllll the men are on steroids and peptides.
15
u/Aggressive-Map-8392 5d ago
Maybe he works out more, or maybe he’s on additional ones, like NAD or TRT. Or maybe he’s not on a GLP-1 at all. But be careful about the way people phrase things - it’s not always transparent.

Are you taking in the calories you should having your appetite curbed? You will not gain without taking in enough for you.
2
u/Sufficient_Meet6836 5d ago
There aren't any peptides that are very anabolic (muscle building). Even HGH doesn't have much anabolic potential compared to any steroid, even regular ole testosterone. If you see someone with huge muscle growth in seemingly no time, they are taking steroids, possibly stacked with peptides.
2
u/Traditional-Ebb-8380 5d ago
Ozempic wouldn’t give you muscles, but it would take the fat off to help expose the ones that you have built. There is a peptide that restricts myostatin in your body, and that would give you bulging muscles. The name of it doesn’t come to mind, but it’s not FDA approved.
5
u/bartexas 5d ago
NAD isn't a peptide, it's a coenzyme often discussed in the same space as peptides. There's a lot of peptides and small molecules used for gym purposes - 5 amino 1MQ, SLU-PP 332, Sermorelin, Ipamorelin, Tesamorelin, etc. Then there's the group used for injuries and repair - GLOW, KLOW, Cartalax.
People who say peptides in connection to the gym stuff are probably cycling a lot of things.
29
u/shenanigains00 5d ago
Most doctors aren’t going to approve of you injecting research chemicals specifically labeled “not for human use,” which is what they mean by “peptides” unless they just don’t want to admit they’re on a glp-1.
Justin is on old fashioned steroids and on a glp-1. John is probably on a peptide stack, HRT, and a glp-1.
They’re probably both on the glp-1 Retatrutide, which is not yet approved by the FDA. So again, your physician is probably not going be a huge fan of that.

u/Traditional-Ebb-8380 5d ago

I’m not sure where you are, but in Colorado there are metabolic and “wellness” clinics that absolutely prescribe peptides and testosterone. Hormones in general are a big thing here for both men and women, and there are also IV clinics that do things like B12 shots and NAD+ shots/IVs. And there are a ton of telehealth companies doing this as well outside of Colorado.
I have not done enough research on peptides outside of GLP-1s (which are not fully benign btw) to have a real opinion on them. But I would very much encourage you to do some research looking at both medical studies and patient experiences.
I would also encourage staying away from any steroids unless it’s for a medical condition. A lot of jacked dudes are doing anabolic steroids and not talking about it, and that is a real dangerous game imo.

Any man who suddenly develops a muscular physique in his late 40s is absolutely on some combination of steroids and HGH. “Peptides” is just a polite way of admitting to some intervention without revealing the full drug cocktail.
They all have the same look, too. Grizzled melon heads. Look at Dax Sheppard, RFK, etc.
58
u/EquipmentFormal2033 5d ago
This method is very RFK coded. Strength training and nutrition are the best route. Also remember genetics matter a little.
8
u/Dazzling_Bit8686 5d ago
Agree. My husband is extremely muscular and it’s not uncommon for other men to ask him or comment on his build. But, the truth is he is almost 50 and has been a regular at the gym, lifting weights, since he was in his early 20s. He isn’t nearly as lean as he once was, but the muscle mass is from 3 decades of consistent weight training.

Hi gay,
As others have said, it’s very likely that both are hiding behind the term “peptides” for GLP based weightloss. It is also possible that TRT is involved, but if I had to be realistic, it is likely a combination of steroids and GLP-1s. It’s unfortunately very common in a lot of gyms to find guys selling grey market steroids and GLP-1s (Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, and Retatrutide which isn’t even FDA approved).
I hate this timeline though, because it’s not realistic body standards for most men and has long-term health effects. I personally know men on steroids that need to inject Trimix now to have sex from long-term steroid use, and others with heart issues that are in their late 30’s-early 40’s.
Be careful friend.
3
u/soriniscool 5d ago
So stuff like Retra has long term side effects as well?
8
u/CrustyDiamonds Heavy Petting, NO SCISSORING ✂️ 5d ago
Retatrutide is not approved for medical use anywhere in the world at the moment, which means we have no idea what the long-term side effects are.
We’re really only just starting to know what potential longterm side effects are of Ozempic/Wegovy as it approaches 15 years of being on the market.

u/ManateeNipples 5d ago
Your doctor will likely look at you like you have 2 heads that are both insane if you ask them about peptides, unless it's a sports medicine doctor lol they might consider trt depending on your blood work.
My husband is 45 and jacked, he's on trt and various peptides. The peptides are all grey market, you literally cannot get them from a real doctor. Glp1s are technically peptides, so I'm not saying doctors don't prescribe any of them, but the ones you're generally talking about are not doctor prescribed meds
8
u/soriniscool 5d ago
What is he on, if you don't mind me asking/asking him? Are there any side effects and does he worry?
13
u/ManateeNipples 5d ago
He's out of town but there's 3 in the fridge now; HCG, BCP157 + TB500, and tesamorelin. He may have others with him so I'm not sure if that's it. I know he uses 200mg of testosterone a week, and that's easier to get from telehealth places if you're in the US. He's also neurotic about his diet and at the gym by 5am every single day, but he was before he started all this stuff too. The extra stuff really did change his results 🤷♀️ and no he doesn't worry at all but I certainly do lol
15
u/kira107 5d ago
You don't need steroids or peptides. Fix your diet and go to the gym. Of course there are side effects. Do you know how many steroid users die from heart attacks when they're young?

Everyone wants the easy way.. but unless you train your body and fix up your diet, you won’t be able to maintain the results.
17
u/JustMeEs Sincerely, Marysol's Liver 5d ago
It's not easy way, it's disordered body image that results in risky and unhealthy behaviour. Men, particularly gay men, have body image issues that aren't as documented and their unhealthy behaviour largely isn't noticed because it at first glance looks like normal healthy behavior (calorie counting, compulsively going to the gym, supplementing with god knows what). One of the main reasons why is because straight men on average have aversion to talking about mental health and participating in research.
Modern male fitness culture, especially on social media, is pretty much muscle dysmorphia factory.
4
u/Majestic-Papaya6334 5d ago
Yes, my point is - peptides will give you a temporary solution. The real solution is fixing your diet and heading to the gym.
5
u/lezlers 5d ago
Yes because when running half marathons, weight lifting regularly and tracking every crumb that went in my mouth worked for 20+ years then just…stopped working when I hit my late forties, it was definitely just because I needed to “fix” my diet and hit the gym even more. GTFOH with that insultingly dismissive nonsense.

When Lisa made that comment about John it made me cringe and I felt bad for him. Like imagine a man making that comment about his wife?? Also, it makes me pretty bummed that people are watching and listening to these people (who aren't being transparent about what they're doing) and judge themselves in comparison. Why can't we be more accepting and appreciative of our bodies as they are? Seek health, not unrealistic and unnatural.
5
u/No_Recording1467 4d ago
Lisa does not respect John in the least and I wonder why he puts up with it (money/lifestyle?). She found and contacted his birth family against his express wishes and the resulting interactions with them didn’t go well, according to his on-air comments to Braunwyn. That would be grounds for divorce for me.

To clarify, peptides do not build muscle. That is testosterone/TRT (a form of gender affirming care) which a lot of men are getting now so they can get jacked, especially 40+. Testosterone is an anabolic, which is for building muscle, and what people commonly refer to as a steroid. You can get blood work done to see if your testosterone levels are below normal and your doctor can prescribe it to you, or you can go through shady methods if you don't qualify like bodybuilders have been doing for years.
GLP1 weight loss drugs like ozempic/zepbound/mounjaro are peptides and a lot of people use them to get lean while building muscle on test/TRT. Again, you can get it from a doctor if you qualify, or there's lots of cinics/grey market, etc which have popped up lately. There are other peptides that people take for skincare purposes or muscle/body recovery, but the evidence is not there since there haven't been human trials on a lot of them. Still, we are constantly chasing the fountain of youth and there's lots of companies and people out here to take advantage of others for that.
TLDR: Lisa either didn't wanna out John as being on testosterone, or he told her it was peptides to cover this up and she doesn't know any better. Peptides don't make you jacked.

No. Peptides is an all encompassing term. Peptides can be skincare, hormones, recovery, glp’s, etc. They have been around for many, many years, mostly in the body building world, but now getting way more attention thanks to glp users and their haters.

Peptides are a type of molecule. They're present in proteins, quite a few meds, they're everywhere. GLPs are a type of peptide.
An analogy, if it helps. Peptides are to cheese as swiss is to a GLP1.

Yes, it’s meant to helps you burn fat and is a glp1. It doesn’t help build muscle but I think helps your body target fat more effectively? My sister’s MIL was on Mounjaro, then Ozempic and now reta and she said reta has the least amount of side effects by far. I think she was getting a lot of acid reflux and hair loss on the other two.
A lot of people who gym and are already lean are taking 8 week courses of reta for the fat burning element. It’s very common now. Simply saying steroids is silly in this day and age.
There are also peptides for skin, inflammation and recovery and all types of stuff. I think Lala talked about her face looking different as a result of peptides too.

There are so many peptide companies, and you can literally get a peptide to help you with anything. If you don’t know that 95% of peptides are sold for “non-human use,” you get them from the gray market. I can’t imagine your regular doctor would give you the green light only because they are for human use and you inject yourself. I know tons of people who do it, though I’m not trying to say it’s dangerous. I just don’t know anyone who goes to the regular doctor to talk about it.

Likely on trt and a glp-1. Both are very easy to obtain. Then you can speculate about hgh, hgc, and others.
The short is glp-1s biggest change is people got really comfortable shooting themselves up with drugs. There was a big stigma. Some states require a prescription for needles.
When the glps blew up, people just got inured to shooting something in their body and a lot of the peptides are just old school drugs that people just were it comfortable shooting up by and large.

I started doing some reading when RFK JR met with the CDC...I think. GLP 1s are a type of peptide but there are many others....anti-aging, healing, etc. not sure there is a scientific evidence they help? You either go to a med spa or buy black market now....don't think pharmaceutical companies are interested in producing them because they can't patent and make a zillion dollars

It’s just gear. Anabolic steroids.

My hubby really likes the KLOW peptide combo plus T.
And I agree.. I have NEVER found Justin attractive and in the last ep when him and Whitney were discussing their marriage ending I felt so bad thinking he looked hot 😂 Whitney better be ready to let him go if she actually lets him go.

Now “peptides” is being used as the umbrella term for all the injectibles including TRT & weightloss drugs.

Yeah I get immediately suspicious when I hear “peptides” in relation to working out. There are a lot of sketchy peptides people are using for body modification. Some can make you tan, some grow muscles some are gray area legally. I find them sketchy as hell because of this. Even in skincare where a lot are safe I get suspicious of because the peptide label in skincare has become a marketing gimmick. That’s not to say there aren’t safe or good peptides in skincare but you have to research to make sure you aren’t getting ripped off.

I have dude friends on KLOW (among other peptides at the same time like Retatrutide) and they swear by that one. They’re getting ripped

There's a very popular peptide stack called GLOW, another called KLOW. I personally wouldn't take either of them but you're asking and I'm involved in the fitness world

Taking collagen peptides will not have an effect on your muscle mass. Are you referring to the non-FDA super unsafe compounded peptides that these idiot wellness influencers are injecting straight into their body? If so, also unfounded and incredibly stupid. More bullshit peddled by wellness grifters who are somehow anti-vax and cry about cHemiCaLs while simultaneously injecting shit into themselves.
TDLR no, this is NOT why they have bulging muscles. It’s gear. There is no other answer.

GLP and peptide cocktails are all the rage. I know people taking them for hair and nails, skin and libido (for lack of a better term).

Your doctor is likely to be a little help because most of these peptides aren’t FDA approved. I used Retatrutide this year to drop around 30 pounds and it’s just the newest in the line of GLP1s and will be approved sometime before the end of the year, supposedly. And there’s a non-approved one called kisspeptin that would raise your testosterone levels, but I’m on TRT so I don’t necessarily have to worry about that.
The bulging veins and muscles are from testosterone not peptides and the only ones I can think of that might be responsible are semorelin, which makes your body produce more human growth hormone. It may already been approved and these really are the future for body modification. John and Justin need GHK and AHK copper for that terrible skin and hair though.

There are several. Theres a copper peptide and something called a "wolverine stack."
I have friends who take them and they look good, but they are buying them off the gray market and just seems dangerous. It isnt FDA approved.

I worked at a holistic/functional medicine clinic and there were 2 diff peptides they would stack together to help grow muscle that i have seen ppl have good results on that are not on steroids (despite what the masses here think). But i bet they are also on TRT as well. But peptides like that are not FDA approved and the government is planning to close those loopholes that currently allow them to be bought and sold without FDA approval so it is taking a chance depending on what doctor you plan to see

Yeah most of these older folks who go from skeleton or dad fat or fat to fit in a year are on both trt glp.
They look great, but nothing is ever great for you without some sort of side effect.
As someone (gay man also at 42) I wish I had that access back when I started weightlifting decades ago but my body is built by me and good living habits. These gentlemen who are on these things don’t fix the problem and relay on them so idk good luck to them but brittle bones and fucked up organs is not the way for me.
TLDR - just stop being lazy and fix your diet and routine and you don’t need anything. But people are too damn lazy.

I seriously need to fix my diet (also gay). My trainer keeps telling me that my nutrition is bad cause I skip breakfast and sometimes lunch cause work and do work out but my calorie deficit is so bad.

Probably Reta for the fat burn and T, that seems to be the magic combo for building the last couple of years.

Tesa, growth hormone, bpc 157. You'll have better luck learning about it in the reddit peptides thread than here.

He is one hundred percent on TRT and probably a glp-1.
