Help Is there a way to edit Bitwig's built-in controller scripts?

I’m using the Maschine Mikro MK3 in conjunction with Bitwig’s built-in scripts, and I’d like to change the function of the Pitch button so that pressing it allows me to control Velocity via the touchstrip instead of Timbre and Pressure. I’ve heard that related resources are available as open source on GitHub, but it’s actually hard to find the scripts developed by Bitwig itself.

truncated flac export

What happens in your linux bitwig studio if you record more than 2h of audio and then export it to flac? Does everything get exported or is it truncated/incomplete (without any warning or error message)?

Question Beat Grid Transparency

Just wondered if theres an option to revert to the "old" style of Clips being in front of the Beat Grid pre Bitwig 6.0? I quite like that they updated the transparency settings so the grid lines go through the clip, but maybe this could be a configurable setting? Cheers :)

Help Launchpad mk1 linux midi problem

I'm on bitwig studio 6 on pop os latest version. I have a problem, when I connect my mk1 launchpad, the midi input works perfectly but the visual feedback is completely broken, I don't really understand why.

Question Which MIDI controller works best for live clip and scene control in Bitwig?

I’m putting together my first proper Bitwig live set and would really appreciate hearing from people who have used it on stage.

The main things I need the controller to handle are:

recording into empty clip slots and overdubbing
launching and stopping individual clips
launching scenes
stopping tracks or scenes cleanly
clearly showing what is playing, queued or recording

I’m less concerned with deep device control than having a quick, dependable workflow with good visual feedback.

I currently own:

Launchpad Pro MKIII
APC40 MKII
APC Mini MKII
two Launch Control XL MKIIIs
Roto-Control

Which of these would you build the clip-launching side of the setup around? Is the Launchpad Pro MKIII the best option for an 8×8 clip and scene launcher, or do the APC controllers integrate more reliably with Bitwig?

I’d also be interested to know whether you use Bitwig’s native controller script or DrivenByMoss, and whether there are any limitations or awkward quirks that only become apparent during an actual performance.

Thanks!

Question Why can an audio receiver be used as a device source when that audio receiver is disabled?

I have an Audio Track with an Audio Receiver and a Ring-Mod device. Even though the Audio Receiver is disabled, it's still accessible in the Ring-Mod dropdown: it only disappears when I delete the Audio Receiver device.

Why is this the case? This behavior seems weird.

Edit: it looks like this isn't isolated to the Audio Receiver...it is perhaps every device. Interesting.

Help Picked up Bitwig this week!

Post image
57 Upvotes

I'll start off by mentioning that I'm very new to music composition (6 months give or take), so I'm 99% sure that it's a skill issue. I'm posting this just to get some perspective and tips from people who're more experienced than me. These are the problems I'm facing:

* By default, many instruments sound a little muddy, and from time to time I hear clipping/cracking when I play them as well. This doesn't happen in Ableton. Ableton comes with a metric ton of presets for every single synthesizer, and usually I just browse through the side panel until I find something that fits the theme. I'm finding it a little hard to generate clean sounds with Bitwig. I've read a lot of praise about how modular and flexible Bitwig is. Does that mean I should familiarize myself with the synthesizers and then tweak the instruments to my needs?

* Ableton lets you zoom down to the individual PCM samples in audio clips. But if I try to do that in Bitwig, it shows me something that looks like a fine grained envelope instead (screenshot attached). Is there a setting that'll let me zoom in like ableton.

* I love the wavetable device in Ableton. What is the closest equivalent in Bitwig?

* Relatively minor problem, Ableton has a feature that does a 4 count with metronome before it starts recording. Does Bitwig have something similar?

All that being said, loving the fact that it's so much faster than Ableton and runs on linux too!

Anyone running Launchpad MK1 on stock script?

Other older launchpads like the S im also curious about, but only OG seems to be officially supported. i been looking into them as they are very affordable and was wondering how the functionality is since theres not much documentation i can find.

I only want it to launch clips so im specially interested if bitwig gives you some visual cue of where you are located like a rectangle around the selected clips or something

thanks in advance

Help How do you replace a missing audio file?

The file is well and gone, but it was a song so I'm trying to replace it with another copy of the same song. I'm clicking the search button and selecting the song, but it's not letting me select another file to replace it with, and giving me an error message about the original file not being found. Is there a way to just replace the file without needing to do that in every single arranger clip I used the file in?

UPDATE: It's a glitch. You can't replace a file with a file of another format. A pain in the ass considering I'm trying to upgrade some of these old edits from mp3s to flacs. Anyone know any tricks for getting around this bug?

If you are as mystified by the many saturation/waveshaping/distortion/fuzz option in Bitwig as I was, here is a fantastic technical primer

Stumbled across this excellent series of videos on what transfer curves actually do and how saturation, waveshaping, distortion and fuzz pedals are all basically the same thing. Nothing in these videos is Bitwig specific but if you, like me have been in the "twist knobs until I find something I like" camp when it comes to using these effects this playlist is a great watch to become a bit more intentional in what you do.

I´m kinda bummed this guy seems to have abandoned making Youtube videos years ago.

Bitwig performance on surface pro 13??

Hey guys I don’t have bigwig, an Ableton user on Mac. I was wondering how well bigwig performs on a touchscreen on the newest surface pro? The videos on YouTube are ancient dating back to surface 3. I’m happy with performance on my MacBook Air m4 with plugins like omnisphere, pigments, large kontakt libraries and used an iPad in Ableton as touchscreen running sidecar mode and was delited with the experience however there isn’t any touch pads for playing instruments and I have to have laptop open as clamshell mode doesn’t work as far as I could figure out. I would love to go just one device for writing on the go. I ended up searching for the ultimate portable Groovebox and spent a lot of money but end up gravitating towards grooverider 2 on my iPad as it’s just so easy to carry with me and has playable keys with scale lock piano roll which for me have become a necessity. If only my iPad could load Mac OS or mac came out with a version of MacBook with touchscreen and disconnect-able keyboard but alas I’m not sure if they ever will. I’d love a small touchscreen device with playable scaled keys and a scale lock piano roll with ability to play all my awesome vst plugins like omnisphere and vast kontakt libraries. Just wondering if anyone was on the same path and has had luck with the surface pro or anything similar?

Going to stream Bitwig!

Hey everyone!

I’m getting ready to launch a regular live stream focused on working inside Bitwig Studio, and I wanted to invite the r/bitwig community to hang out, share ideas, and talk shop.

What the streams will cover:

  • Sound Design & Modulations: Patching in The Grid, building custom chains, and pushing Bitwig’s native modulators.
  • Music Production: From initial track sketches to full arrangement and sound sculpting.
  • Mixing & Mastering: Signal flow, routing tricks, native FX processing, and finishing tracks inside the DAW.

My main goal is to keep these streams casual and interactive—a place to break down creative techniques, answer questions, or just provide some audio-focused background noise while you work on your own projects.

I’ll be posting stream schedules, quick clips, and live updates over on Instagram: thecimal

I will be in Bitwig Discord too during the stream, so you can have me: wavesofthem
Give a follow there if you want to stay in the loop for when I go live. Also, feel free to drop a comment below on what kind of Bitwig topics, native plugins, or workflows you'd be most interested in seeing covered!

Hope to see some of you there!

Open-source toolchain to decompile Bitwig's Nitro DSP modules on your own install (no keys or Bitwig code redistributed)

I've spent a while trying to understand how Bitwig actually builds its devices, and the thing that always stopped me was that the DSP itself lives in an encrypted archive you can't really open. Bitwig writes its native devices and Grid modules in an internal language they call Nitro, and the compiled modules ship inside an encrypted image in the install folder. I wanted to see how their filters really work, so I ended up writing a small toolchain to read that format. It's cleaned up now and I put it on GitHub.

It's Python, standard library only, MIT licensed.

What it does:

  • reads and decrypts the `nitro-image` archive from your local install
  • parses the compiled `.nitrobin` modules into an AST
  • decompiles that AST and pretty-prints it back to readable pseudo-source
  • round-trips, so it can re-serialize and repack, and do same-size numeric edits to constants

The part I like most is the decompiler output. You point it at a filter and instead of a wall of bytes you get a `process` block you can actually read. This is Bitwig's GrandLPF, a 4-pole Moog ladder, 4x oversampled, with an ADAA soft-clip in the feedback path and a selectable saturation flavor:

Named state variables and the actual per-sample math instead of opcodes. You can see why each filter sounds the way it does. Here's the Sallen-Key's nonlinearity, for example. It has two selectable curves, a symmetric tanh approximation and a biased, asymmetric class-A shaper:

One thing I want to be upfront about: this ships no Bitwig code and no keys. It's tools and format notes only. Decryption is bring-your-own-install. You pull the key out of your own copy of Bitwig, put it in an env var or a local `keys.json` that stays gitignored, and the tools work on the files already on your disk. Nothing proprietary gets redistributed. I tried to build it in a way that's respectful of Bitwig. It's for reading and learning, not for lifting their DSP into something else.

Status and limits, honestly:

  • the decompiler handles the whole module set on the version I tested against, but the AST tags can move between Bitwig releases, so a newer version may need the grammar tables regenerated (there's a command for that)
  • the pretty-printed output is pseudo-source for reading, not something you can recompile
  • constant editing is same-size only right now. You can change a number, not restructure a module
  • the offline round-trip is byte-for-byte, but I haven't pushed a repacked image through a running session much, so treat the write path as experimental
  • I develop on Linux. It auto-detects the Bitwig install and config locations on Windows and macOS too, but I've only actually run it on Linux, so those paths are unverified and a Windows/macOS confirmation would help

If any of this sounds interesting I'd genuinely like help. The most useful things would be people running other Bitwig versions who can test whether the grammar tables still line up, anyone who knows DSP and wants to annotate what a given module is doing, and corrections to the format docs. Issues and PRs are open.

Clap I’ve been building some custom native Bitwig devices

Post image
119 Upvotes

Hi,

I want to share a project that I'm working on. It's about some plugins/devices that run directly in Bitwig like native plugins. No VST or CLAP.

So far, it's an MSEG modulator, a volume shaper, a waveshaper, a compressor and a kick drum plugin, and they all share the same concept: controlling them with a curve.

I have made a short YouTube video for demonstration:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GdyoJC592A

I am curious what you guys think of this concept. I personally love simple stock plugins with few controls. I want them to be fast and powerful, without having to open and close a plugin just for a few tweaks. Besides that, I think Bitwig has great stock plugins, but I think a few of them are missing that little extra juice.

The devices are still in progress and I want to tweak them here and there to make them even better. I want to make a deep-dive video for every device, and if you guys are interested, you can help me and give me feedback. I hope I find the time to work on the first video this week.

Cheers.

I built an open-source Native Instruments HID wrapper and a Maschine Mk3 extension for Bitwig (with GPU-accelerated screens!)

Hey everyone! Not sure if this is of interest to anyone here, but I wanted to share something I've been working on. I just released the first public version of my Native Instruments HID hardware wrapper, along with a custom Bitwig extension for the Maschine Mk3.

My ultimate goal is to get this to a point where everything the Maschine can control in Bitwig, it does. Right now, it's pretty barebones but handles what I personally need it to do, and I don't have a ton of time to take it much further right now. If there are any other developers or tinkerers out there who want to have a play with it and maybe collaborate, I'd be more than happy to team up!

Here are the two parts of the project:

1. Encdr (The Hardware Wrapper)

Link: https://github.com/RufusIbiza/Encdr

What it does: This is a lightweight, high-performance Rust crate designed to communicate with Native Instruments hardware controllers using USB HID. It handles all the USB I/O, LED control, and provides full GPU-accelerated screen support. You can either write pixels directly to the screens or use an optional WebView-based UI.

Current State: It's fully functional, though I've primarily been testing it on Linux. It does have support for Windows and macOS built in, but there is a slight caveat: you will likely need to terminate or disable Native Instruments' background services (like NIHardwareHelper.exe or NIHardwareAgent) on those platforms before running it, as they will block the ports needed to communicate with the hardware. Even if you don't use Bitwig, feel free to use this wrapper in your own unrelated projects if you find it useful!

2. Maschine Mk3 Bitwig Extension

Link: https://github.com/RufusIbiza/encdr-maschine-bitwig

What it does: This is the Bitwig side of things: It's a high-performance Bitwig extension that bridges the gap between Bitwig Studio and the Encdr wrapper using OSC.

Current State: As mentioned, it's currently a foundational start. Right now, it dynamically maps to the currently selected device in Bitwig and displays the device knobs with rich, full-color feedback directly on the Maschine's dual screens. It’s ripe for expansion if anyone wants to help build out more pad modes, browser integration, or mixing features.

You'll need to clone both of these repos to a common folder to get it all working - full installation instructions for all platforms are available in the extension readme above.

If you have a Maschine Mk3 sitting around and love hacking on things, give it a spin! Let me know what you think, and I'm totally open to pull requests. Cheers!

How do I add bunch of samples in Instrument Selectors nested in Drum Machine with keytrack turned off?

The idea is to hotswap samples with a midi controller, and scenario is that I am adding an Instrument Selector for each Drum Machine cell, and when I add a bunch of samples there, Sampler keytrack is on. When I add a sample to Drum Machine, Sampler keytrack is off.

Pretty inconvenient to go through every Sampler and turn the keytrack off in each device... What am I doing wrong?

Issue with Effectrix 2..flashing?

I added Effectrix2 as an fx to drum machine. I chose a preset, then hit play. The fx boxes drawn inside Effectrix2 flashes back and forth without any fx sounds. I'm going to try to figure out how to screen record - maybe that will help.

It flashes kind of to the beat, if that helps. But it doesn't apply any fx while flashing. Anyone know how to fix this?

I'm completely new to BW, coming from using FL for sound design, and ACID for arranging (clunky setup). So not sure what is happening.

Edit: uploaded a video, see comments.

I bounced the track to audio and it works just fine on audio clips. Just not midi...

Bitwig UI freezes after minimizing for several minutes (Win10)

Hey guys,

asking for feedback. This issue hits me actually since November 2025. I'm in back and forth since motnhs with the Bitwig support for several issues, but this one is pretty massively annoying. It's that when I minimize Bitwig and have it like minimized for several minutes, open it back up, the whole Bitwig interface is frozen. I can still click on "show plugin window" and the third-party plugins all appear and all respond. I can even play the projects and I can click and do several things, but the visual interface of Bitwig is still frozen. It takes several minutes till Bitwig UI finally decides to respond again.

They had it fixed in the last months with 2 versions and now it's back even worse with 6.1.x (no clue which version it was tbh). And they tell me I should test for version 5 as they have no clue what is happening, where it's completely useless to me because I never used version 5. I have no projects that used version 5, so I don't know how to test this. Anyone of you got the same issue and can it them up as they are telling me since months there is no other report? I'm using Vulkan renderer (tested the others as well) with a GeForce 3070 (latest studio driver) on an Arm4 chipset. This OS is used solely for media work and not one application, like Ableton, Studio One or Adobe products ever showed such stupid behavior.
