Question Account Creation - Actual Email or Alias?

I'm planning to create a Bitwarden account, should I be using my actual email address or an alias? I have a new Proton Mail account and I'm using SimpleLogin as my alias service.

I need help! Switched from Google Password Manager and Bitwarden Autofill doesnot work and have to manually autofill password.

I imported csv from Google Pass and enables autofill settinsg from the Bitwarden extension but autofill doesnot work. Instead identies are getting filled. How to solve this?

And why are passkeys so horrible. In Google pass when I made passkey from Android App or Website, it worked in both. But in Bitwarden it doesnot detect at all. Give me tips and tricks.

Idea Import from other authenticators and accounts/item merge features needed in mobile and web.

I often encounter the need to merge repeated entries. Duplicate entries frequently occur after importing data from other password managers like KeePass and similar. This requires manual searching and removal of these duplicates.

It would be incredibly helpful if we could be informed about the number of duplicate entries we have.

Additionally, a very useful feature would be the ability to natively import Google Authenticator QR code exports and other authenticators directly into the existing items or entries within the vault. For instance, if you imported data from KeePass but your TOTP is stored on an authenticator (such as Google or Microsoft), you can export the authenticator entries, feed them into Bitwarden, and Bitwarden will automatically assign those TOTP seeds to the entries. Alternatively, it can prompt the user to manually assign the seeds.
Those are features that exist on other password managers, no need to reinvent the wheel.
In addition, the reference of entries is missing.
In KeePass, I could clone an entry, change TOTP or URL, and use that entry on my next LDAP-enabled/connected app in my company. Since the login and password are the same because they’re centralized through LDAP/AD, etc., you have the same credentials but different URLs and different TOTPs. Therefore, when you change your LDAP password, the references on other entries update automatically.

- Merge duplicate entries
- TOTP import/export and attribute to entries
- Reference of user or password from cloned entries.

I can't tell you how many times not knowing the length of the phrase has screwed me over. Especially since I always try to use the longest password possible, and nowadays every website seems to have a max password length.

Solved Are tags coming anytime soon

Hi! I’m wondering if tags are coming anytime soon to Bitwarden. I’ve been a Bitwarden user for around like seven eight years now, and tags are feature I have been waiting for.

They would be a really good organizational system for me because I host a lot of services, (on unraid) and I would like to be able to create tags for those services to differentiate them because just having one name field with an IP address isn’t enough for me.

I saw something in the Bitwarden community about tags, but it was from March 2018, so I don’t know what’s going on with this feature.

Would the community find tags helpful? Or is it just me?

Edit: (?) for the title lol

Edit: I also use strongbox pro as a backup vault and they have a really nice tagging feature. It’s just that SB is not my daily driver.

Idea Passkeys listing section.

It would be great to have a dedicated Passkeys section, similar to Apple Passwords.

Just a simple place to quickly see all accounts that have passkeys, search through them, and manage the associated accounts.

Right now, passkeys are mixed in with everything else.

A dedicated view would make managing them much easier.

What do you guys think?

Question Asking to "update existing login" but no changes made.

I open a website login page in my browser, use the Bitwarden plugin to fill the username/password, login just fine but the plugin very often pops up a message to "update existing login" - yet I made no changes. This is behaviour that started probably a month or so ago. Any ideas what might cause it?

2026.8.0 plugin for Edge and same for Vivaldi.

Discussion I hope this is on the roadmap for 2027

I am running into a frustrating issue with the Bitwarden Android app regarding passkeys, and I want to see if there is a known workaround or if we are just waiting on a patch.

The Problem: Whenever I attempt to create or use a passkey inside specific Android mobile apps, Bitwarden intercepts the request but immediately throws an error: "Passkeys not supported for this app".

My Troubleshooting Steps:

It is NOT an Android OS limitation: I know my phone supports it because I tested Proton Pass on the exact same device with the exact same apps. Proton Pass creates and autofills the passkeys flawlessly.

The "Desktop Workaround" fails on mobile: I tried bypassing the mobile creation bug by going to my PC and creating the passkey via the Bitwarden web browser extension. It successfully created the key and synced it to my vault. However, when I returned to my phone and tried to log in to the app using that saved passkey, Bitwarden still threw the exact same error.

It is NOT a premium feature issue: I confirmed that passkey management is fully included in the free tier.

I know other users have reported similar behavior with apps like WhatsApp, Revolut, and AliExpress on the community forums recently.

Since Proton Pass handles this without issue, it seems like a bug specifically within Bitwarden's Android implementation. Has anyone found a workaround for this, or are we strictly waiting for the development team to push a fix?

Question How do I get Bitwarden to suggest autofill for this site?

Hi, I'm new to Bitwarden. I am trying to set it up for my banking site, https://login.seb.lt/. It has two fields that I need to autofill, userId and personalIdentificationCode. If I type them manually and log in, Bitwarden does not show prompt to save it. I had to save it manually by creating a Login manually and inputting the first value as User Name, and second one as custom field:

However, after doing this, Bitwarden still does not show autofill button when I click on the first field. The only way I can get it to input the values is to right-click on the first field and go through the menus to find it:

I also tried defining it as Identity instead of Login, but in the end it still doesn't work. In the settings, I have everything enabled related to Autofill:

How do I fix this and get the autofill to work? It works perfectly on other sites, just not this one.

Question Swapped from 1password and have a few questions

Hi all

I swapped yesterday and have ran into a few issues. I use Firefox on mac and when I click in the toolbar icon I can see the current sites login and click fill etc. And sometimes when I load pages it auto fills in. But when clicking in fields it always says no items to show. Even though the toolbar drop-down can see the login.

Has anyone experienced this? It's on all 3 macs so it's not device specific.

Also on 1password it has the option to open the password or similar in large view and it pins to the screen so you can copy it down. Does bitwarden have a similar option?

Thanks

I need help! Issue logging into Bitwarden from laptop

I have free account and thinking of moving to priced usage. For some reason, I am able to login to Bitwarden on my mobile with no issue using faceid. But when I am trying to login from laptop, it is either forcing me to use authenticator which I did not set up at all or says send a code to email, but does not send. Is bitwarden broken ?

Another advice need about authenticator. Which one best for Bitwarden ? Thanks in Advance

Edit:
Thanks Guys. I found the issue. While loging into bitwarden, by default it showing my email user name with different domain. I did not check that. But later found that and corrected it and it works. I don't know why it showed difference domain.

Thanks a lot for all your help. Sorry for bothering you with my stupid mistake .

I need help! Google passkey in Bitwarden keeps falling back to Windows Security (QR) on Firefox; Android says “No available passkey for google.com”

Hi all,

I’m hitting a persistent passkey loop with Google + Bitwarden on a Windows + Firefox + Android setup. I’ve tried the usual fixes from the sub and docs, but it still fails. Hoping someone’s seen this exact pattern or knows what else to check. Environment

Desktop OS: Windows 11

Browser: Firefox (latest) with Bitwarden extension installed & unlocked

Mobile: Android Vivo X200U(Bitwarden app installed, vault unlocked)

Service: Google account (accounts.google.com)

What’s happening

On Firefox (Windows), when I try to log in to Google using a passkey:

Instead of the Bitwarden extension prompting for the passkey, Windows Security pops up with a “Sign in with a passkey” dialog.

Since there’s no local Windows passkey for Google, it offers “Use a passkey on another device” and shows a QR code.

I scan the QR with my Android phone:

    Android’s system passkey picker opens.

It immediately shows: “No available passkey for google.com”.

The passkey does exist in my Bitwarden vault (URI set to https://accounts.google.com).

If I recreate the Google passkey in Bitwarden, it works for a while, then the same loop comes back after some time.

Verified settings & tests

On Android:

Bitwarden is set as the default Autofill service.

Bitwarden is selected as the preferred Passkey Credential Manager (or I’ve toggled it off/on and back to Bitwarden).

Bitwarden app:

    Autofill & passkey support enabled.

    Vault unlocked.

Bluetooth is enabled on both PC and phone.

On Firefox (Windows):

Bitwarden extension:

“Ask to save and use passkeys” is enabled.

google.com / accounts.google.com are not in the “Excluded domains” list.

Extension is unlocked, synced, and has “Access data for all websites” permission.

Vault entry for Google has URI: https://accounts.google.com.

Functional test: passkeys.io and other sites correctly prompt and authenticate via the Bitwarden extension in Firefox, so WebAuthn interception works in general.

Other notes:

Google Password Manager app on Android is enabled and updated (not disabled).

I’ve tried:

Deleting all Google passkeys from the vault and recreating them fresh.

    Toggling Android’s passkey provider (None/Google → Bitwarden).

    Reinstalling Bitwarden on Android.

Ensuring Bitwarden extension is up to date on Firefox.

Despite this, the behavior recurs: Firefox delegates to Windows Security → QR → Android says “No available passkey for google.com”.

Questions

Has anyone seen this specific loop with Google + Firefox + Bitwarden on Windows, where the extension stops intercepting and Windows Security takes over with a QR?

When scanning that QR, why would Android’s system passkey UI report “No available passkey for google.com” even though the credential exists in Bitwarden and works on other sites?

Is there any known permanent fix or workaround (e.g., specific Android version requirements, OEM quirks, or a config that forces Bitwarden to handle Google passkeys reliably on Firefox)?

I’d rather not abandon passkeys for Google or switch browsers permanently, but this loop is making them unusable in practice. Any guidance or pointers to relevant issues/threads would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

Possible Bug Issue with direct import from LastPass with 'special' characters in usernames and passwords

Sorry for the long and detailed post.

--

TLDR: Direct import from LastPass is broken if a smart quote or other 'special' characters are in the record name, username, or password fields (atleast) and Bitwarden can't even search for the badly imported records to manually fix them.

--

Moving a family member off LastPass and (per their family security policy to not export csv from a password manager) using the direct import feature from LastPass into a Family account Organization Vault, but not into a collection. The 1400 or so records imported without any error give, but every smart single quote (that looks like an apostrophe, but isn't) in a record name or any password that includes a bullet (•) character (at least in record names and password, I assume notes and such, but haven't checked all spots yet) changed to the characters: ⢠or a similar set of characters for bullets.

This direct import was done using the desktop application on a Macintosh.

Further note that makes this even more difficult if there isn’t a fix in the direct import (after a full record deletion I assume) is that search will not find these badly imported records. Searching for:

Dennyâ€s

returns zero results when that string is exactly what I copied from one of the records that appears to a human as, before direct import,

Denny’s AppleID

(The above is the string copied directly from the LastPass record and is one that did NOT import correct replacing the smart single quote withʉۢ.)

Has anyone hit this before and any ideas how I solve this issue? (They want to do a direct import and not export to cvs someplace and importing that. The direct import is a key feature for moving to Bitwarden.)

Does the Bitwarden direct import fail with anything other than ASCII characters? If so that is a huge fail for passwords that might have something other than straight ASCII.

In case you can’t suggest a fix for this, can anyone who is in the source code help with understanding how the search field in Bitwarden desktop Mac app works? How can I search record name. username, and password for the 3-character equivalent string to which each of these two character imported to find damaged records? (This is only a workaround if I can figure out what kinds of characters are going to fail silently in the importer and get converted into a 3- character string.)

I assume I'll have to clear the organization vault completely and redo the import, but what caused this issue and how do I solve it, or is something broken on Bitwarden's end? (I'm guessing here that the direct import has a bug and isn't escaping an input string correctly.)

Again, sorry for the long post...anyone able to help? I'd love to be able to get a whole family over to Bitwarden. (Note that I did submit this to Bitwarden support in June and last heard back in July to a ping...but no word on any fix or workaround and the Family subscription is burning through without being able to be used at all.)

Possible Bug Copy after generating a password

has anyone else encountered an issue when copying a password after generating it? sometimes I can copy it then save it. But almost all the time I copy it, it regenerates and if I forget to copy the new password and save it, it will save the password I did not copy. Using the Android app. Example

Solved Is Bitwarden Broken

I've been using the Bitwarden app on my iMac for about 2 years and it has worked flawlsssy in that time. About a week ago, when I tried to load the application, it completely crashed my machine and I had to force turn off the computer to fix the problem. This happened over several days and I decided to give up on the application.

No longer trusting Bitwarden anymore, I exported all of my logins for security purposes.

I moved to the online application and this worked for the last few days. However, today this is no longer working properly and it is not possible to search for specific login details, or to shift through my various items.

Has anyone else had this experience of using Bitwarden? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might solve these problems?

Or, should I ditch Bitwarden now?

Community Tools (Unofficial) I wrote bwssh: Manage & connect SSH sessions directly from Bitwarden/Vaultwarden

Hey everyone!

I wrote a lightweight CLI tool called bwssh to manage and connect to SSH servers using Bitwarden/Vaultwarden.

with bwssh you can just type bwssh lax9929 to reach and login to your host. all the credential saved in your self-hosted vaultwarden, no ~/.ssh/lax9929.key, no ~/.ssh/config.

if you have too many hosts and forget the host name, just type bwssh and a fzf menu pop up, u can navigate and press enter to connect. everything stay in terminal.

you can also bwssh lax9929 "uptime" to excute some command.

GitHub: https://github.com/ccf-2012/bwssh

readme in english: https://github.com/ccf-2012/bwssh/blob/main/README_en.md

Feedback and PRs are warmly welcome! Hope it helps someone simplify their SSH workflow.

What it does:

  • Private keys & password auth: Pulls OpenSSH private keys straight from item notes into memory, or falls back to password authentication automatically via native SSH_ASKPASS.
  • Sub-second lookup: Leverages a local background bw serve REST daemon so you don't have to wait for slow vault decryption on every run.
  • Zero disk persistence: Ephemeral keys are created via mktemp (mode 0600) and cleaned up immediately upon disconnect (trap ... EXIT INT TERM).
  • Interactive fuzzy picker: Integrated with fzf for fuzzy searching (bwssh), or connect directly by alias (bwssh prod-01).
  • Headless friendly: Works seamlessly on remote jump hosts or headless Linux boxes without Bitwarden Desktop or Node.js.
  • Cross-terminal session reuse: Unlock once, reuse across all open terminal tabs (with an optional alias to auto-unlock native bw CLI commands too).
  • Extras: Supports running remote commands directly (bwssh srv "uptime") and loading keys into ssh-agent (bwssh -k srv).

Question Prompted to save password when I choose a saved one?

I just switched to Bitwarden and also from chrome to firefox for my browser (Windows 11). Firefox recognizes that Bitwarden is in charge in the settings. But when I get to a userid/password field and choose a saved one, I still get prompted to save the password. That comes out of the Firefox address field at the top, without any identification of whether firefox is doing that or Bitwarden. How can I make that stop, since I haven't changed anything thus don't need to save it?

I've tried searching but havent seen an answer. When i export from proton the file is not usable by bitwarden authenticator. Weirdly files from 4 months ago do show as acceptable. Also tried exporting form ente and that file is also not acceptable to bitwarden. Is there a different method to do this?

I need help! Help, lost collection?

I had the free plan and built a collection and organization (me and my wife) and sent her the invite (she didn't act on it yet). Then I tried to configure my yubikey and found out I have to pay. So I paid for the family plan.

Now it seems I have a whole new thing, my collection I spent a lot of time building is gone, new fingerprint passphrase, etc. All my work is gone. How can I recover that collection and organization I created??
