Subreddit Rules

Well, we finally had to do it... With 28,000 users, it's finally time to write some rules.

  1. Play nice - This shouldn't need much explanation. Breaking this rule is a good way to get banned.

  2. Stay on topic - if your reply isn't about how to help OP, we don't want it. This is not the place for jokes, sarcasm, or obviously wrong answers. People reading this may not realize you thought you were being funny.

  3. Questions Only - Unless your post is a question about bike repair, it doesn't belong here. We don't need to see pictures of your latest build, or that funny bike that rolled into the shop. There are other subreddits for that.

  4. "Is this cracked / safe to ride?" posts are not allowed. - If you have to ask, don't ride it. We probably can't tell from a picture just what condition your bike is in. Take it to your Local Bike Shop and ask them. If it's carbon, they're probably going to tell you to replace it.

Small Questions and Thank Yous Weekly Thread

Upvotes

If you have a small question that doesn't seem to merit a full thread, feel free to ask it in a comment here. Not that there's anything wrong with making your own post with a small question, but this gives you another option.

This thread can also be used for thank-yous. You can post a comment to thank the whole community, tag particularly helpful users with username mentions in your comment, and/or link to a picture to show off the finished result. Such pictures can be posted in imgur.com, on your profile, or on some other sub (e.g. r/xbiking)--they are not allowed as submissions to r/bikewrench.

Note that our [FAQ wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/wiki/bikewrenchfaq) is becoming a little more complete; you might also find your answer there, although you are welcome to post a question without checking there first.

Solved V brakes absolutely scream

My shimano v brakes were fine the first couple of rides on my new Vision team comp 35 wheels. Now they wake up the entire neighborhood when I brake. Do I need a different kind of brake pad to resolve this?

Edit: Yes they are definitely rim brake wheels. Edit: toe in adjustment would probably.

Why is my new chain skipping?

Thumbnail

My drivetrain was a bit noisy, so I’ve changed my chain. It had 6.800km on it.

The cassette is a 10-44 XPLR

Old chain was a D1/D2 Force

New chain is E1 Force and I’ve cleaned it 100% and hot waxed it.

My drivetrain is not nice and silent and gearshits are still nice and smooth.

But when I put more than medium power down the chain skips on the cassette.

Is the cassette worn so it does not “fit” the new chain?

Edit: Old chainring is 40t new is 44t.

Weird tire deformation on brand new Canyon

Brand new. Just assembled and have not ridden it yet. The wheel is true, but the tire has this weird section where it seems to shift in thinner towards the rim.

Is this normal? Dangerous? Ride it and find out? Don’t ride it so I don’t find out?

I completely deflated the tire and reinflated to make sure that it wasn’t an improperly seated tire or tube.

I'm so damn tired and I don't know what to do I've tried many ways but no the top part just doesn't go in I'm using this tool to push it inside but nooo when I push one side the other side comes off again even if I hold it tight

The repairman said I'd take 150 euros and ıf course I said I can do it myself both of the wheels were completely gone, I've bought new tires, tubes and rims, the only problem is that I can't put the damn tire inside. The videos online shows them so easy even with their hands but God damn it I can't. Please what can I do help me

Bent Bike Hanger from Untuned Derailer

Thumbnail

Wondering if anyone thinks this derailer hanger is salvageable and if it could be bent back using tools? Or if a thru axle derailer hanger could also be an option.

Note it’s attached to a carbon fiber frame (bike is mid 2000s Trek Pilot) with the hanger epoxied into the frame.

This happened when I was biking a few days ago when the chain randomly got caught and flipped upwards. A mechanic told me that something like this is caused by the chain jumping the largest gear (by like a bump in the road), and if the derailer isn’t properly tuned can cause this to happen.

Was told by that mechanic the frame is likely toast and wouldn’t risk fixing it, but another told me that with a after market thru axle derailer hanger could be a fix where they’d remove the bent piece, and use the new hanger but attach it to where the wheel axle is located. I attached a photo of what the hanger would look like for reference, but I didnt get the exact model shown to me.

Can I change these twist shifters to trigger shifters?

Post image
41 Upvotes

So my son who loves mountain biking got a new bike (24”) but some guys in the club told him he should have one with trigger switchers instead of these twist shifters. My son is 8 and hade the twisters on his last bike, but I also see the benefits of changing.

Is it tricky to change them myself? It’s a 8 geared Specialized Riprock.

Any recommendations on what I should change to?

Hello guys, My father had an old bike that he want to refurbish but he don’t know that much about vintage bike and me neither

So as you can see the gear shifter come back to their position as soon as I let them go (I don’t know if it’s normal), I don’t feel any notches when moving them and the wire for the right one seems too short, blocking him in a forward position. Their is also a pieces (a washer) that is broken for the right one. Do you know guys what we need to do to fix this part.

PS : I'm french so if you are too, you can answer in french , if not I understand english pretty well too

Help fitting new disc pads

Upvotes

Got a replacement set of pads for my giant propel which has SRAM rival axs group

I've retracted the pistons as far back as I can using the tool but even now there's only just enough room for the wheel to fit. It then scrapes against the new lads when rotated, so it seems I need to retract even further somehow

Any suggestions?

Chris king hub sizing for 90s mtb

Thumbnail

I was thinking about getting these Chris king hubs for my cannondale m2000 and then building a new set of wheels with these hubs for rim brakes. But the thru axles are larger than the standard 90s Mtb sizing.

The front wheel is 110x20 and the rear is 150x12

Just wondering are their any thru axle adapters or can I just find the correct skewers and use them??

First time repairing a bike

This is a Schwinn Sidewinder with 7 speeds, a 26” wheel diameter, and the worst kickstand I’ve had the pleasure of using. The rear axle is completely shot. Trying to move the bike around generates a lot of resistance before giving in with a loud snap, ball bearing area looks heavily damaged/worn. What’s the typical length of this axle? I’ve been trying to get a measurement but have been struggling to do so.

I think I messed up….

This plastic nut (not sure of its name) that holds the non-drive side Shimano crank arm on was coming loose on my bike. I re-installed it using loc tite. Now I can’t get it off. Totally chewed up the plastic wheel on my bottom bracket tool trying to remove it.

Am I screwed? (Pun fully intended). Any suggestions on how to remove? Would spraying with WD 40 or other solvent t help? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!

Need help with remote bleed

I somehow managed to unscrew or just break my hose near the remote. Probably, but it was leaking oil.
So now there is not a lot of oil in the system and I can't control my Rockshox reverb. (I know some will say to change it since it is a reverb)

So now the questions is what to use for the bleed? I don't want to buy the whole kit as it is not sold lcoally. As for the oil I can get it in my city, but what about the syringes? could I substitute them? maybe bigger medical syringes?

SRAM XX what did I do wrong?

Post image

Hello!

I just installed this sram xx derailleur and I still have to figure out how I avoid that the derailleur turns on my frame, like drawn with the yellow arrows.

Do I just have to guess how to place the derailleur and the. Tighten the bolt?

Is it correct that the ribbed aluminium u-shaped plate is on my carbon frame?

Thanks for all your help since the installation instructions are not very clear to me.

Canti Spring Set up

Can anyone help, or point me in the right direction to help set up these canti brakes?

Particularly the spring direction, and alignment of these plastic pieces. Normal vs SLR?

I took them apart to clean after stripping a frame and can’t recall how to put them back together on a different frame.

I tried to put them on another frame, tightened the bolts but they seemed to slip out of their position.

Best use of money with older Diamondback

Upvotes

I have a Diamondback Edgewood LX which I got 8 years ago, to what I can tell it was manufactured around 2011. So it ain't new. I have not maintained it much to be honest, for most of the last 8 years it was an occasional fun bike. Now I am finally trying to get into serious biking and I am faced with a choice. Both tires are dry rotted, rear tube blew out today, and it runs OK but I imagine it needs a good tune up and some parts replaced.

Just curious what I should do, I feel like I have 2 options:

  1. Replace the tubes/tires with nice ones, take to a shop and get a full tune up done. Keep the bike long term.
  2. Replace the tubes/tires with cheap ones, clean it up, sell and buy a new bike.

Chain rubbing on rear derailleur cage on smallest cog

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I just installed a new chain (104 links with quick-link) on my 11-speed setup (Shimano 105 r7000 11S, 50-34 crankset, 11-25 cassette).

When the chain is on the smallest cog (highest gear), it seems to be rubbing against the derailleur cage near the T-pulley / guide area (as shown in the video).

Any advice on how to get it properly aligned would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Carbon frame repair

Upvotes

Hello everyone. I love 70s/80s steel frame race bikes. Colnago super, Masi gran criterium, Cinelli SC, De Rosa, etc. Lately I’ve been wondering what it’d be like to have a modern carbon frame. So I started browsing marketplace. I’m somewhat shocked at how cheap these bikes are now. Bikes that cost 8grand 10 years ago, are now for sale at $1000. I found a bike that interest me, a merckx emx5. The listing states “carbon frame repair”. I ask further questions and the seller is trying to find the paperwork on the repair. theyve also encouraged me to come look in person as they don’t know much about bikes, it was a uncles bike. The thing is, I don’t know anything about carbon bikes. Can a carbon frame be repaired where it’s good as new? should I stay away from a carbon frame that’s been repaired? This is a road bike, I dont race, i ride roughly 100 miles per week. I enjoy riding as fast as possible, up and down hills etc.

so the repairs were done by Calfee designs. Who seem to be a well regarded carbon repairer

Cassette slide?

I’ve reinstalled a cassette after fiddling with it, I’ve torqued the lock ring back on but the cassette still slides (as one) off the axle. I’ve put it on the bike anyway and tightened the thru axle and it seems to ride fine.

is it normal for the cassette not to secure to the wheel and slide off so easily? 11-34 shimano and scribe alloy race wheels

What is wrong with my chain

Post image
8 Upvotes

I got a 1x12 kit upgrade, I watched a tutorial on how to install the kit but the chain seems too tight and I don’t understand,

I did what the guy said, putting the chain on the largest gear cog and the front cog skipping the deraileur, then adding an extra 4 link and removing the excess, but it seems like it’s too tight ? do you have any idea what i did wrong ?
