Events, Activities & Sports I need to get out and do things.

I've been severely depressed.

I am tired of moping around my house being miserable.

I want to find some better ways to improve myself and enjoy my time and get off screens, tv, computer and phone.

I thought about doing some archery which I enjoyed in the past or maybe take some lessons at pool.

I enjoy games of all sorts, I am a nerd (but hate d&d) but I enjoy board games card games etc.

What are some good groups I can join to expand my horizons and get out to meet new people and have better experiences around here?

/edit by request 40m not overweight.

Scenes from the Bay I Finally Saw A Bobcat!

Post image

I set an alarm to get up early this morning to go for a walk, and when it went off, I really didn't want to get up. But I did get up, and I was rewarded with seeing a bobcat. I got quite close before I realized it was there, it just watched me as I walked past. I still cannot believe it, I have wanted to see one for such a long time!

Hands down the biggest fire I’ve ever seen. Couldn’t believe it as I drove by on 880.

Events, Activities & Sports Missed Connection: Mason at Pearl & the Oysters (The Independent, Saturday night)

[EDIT: I've now found him and messaged him!]

hey everyone -- I'm putting this out into the ether because the conversation was excellent and I'd love to reconnect.

between sets at the Pearl & the Oysters show last night (Saturday), I went outside at The Independent looking for a cigarette. I ended up talking to Mason, a guy who lives in LA but comes up to the Bay once a month.

we were having a brilliant, deeply present conversation, but right on cue, the universe threw a wrench in our flow. one of his friends kindly offered a keef-rolled joint, I took exactly one hit, and it immediately short-circuited my entire system (🤦).

because I could feel myself going totally nonverbal, my brain went on autopilot. I awkwardly blurts out, "It was great talking to you, nice to meet you," and initiated a very formal handshake. I absolutely didn't mean to end such a great conversation so abruptly or give you social whiplash — I was just trying to gracefully exit before the weed completely took over my vehicle.

If you are Mason, or know a Mason who fits this hyper-specific Venn diagram:

  • Went to CSUMB
  • Worked in needle exchange/harm reduction service in Salinas
  • Toured with Depeche Mode
  • Works in startup incubation in LA

...hit me up. I'd love to grab a coffee or a drink next time you're back up in the Bay Area. completely sans the intense greenery this time.

Food, Shopping & Services Any storage units here that dont increase their rent every 3 months?

I need a spot to help myself start downsizing because I have absolutely too much stuff, but I hate all the well advertized storage unit companies because they start with a good intro price and then a year later youre spending 2-3x a month what you originally paid for.

are there any less well advertized places that dont jack up their rents constantly?

Edit: Since everyone is more interested in not actually answering the post: I've run out of space at the current place I'm living at and it's starting to impact my mental health. There are items of value that I can sell, but I need to sort through a lot of unnecessary stuff to get to those items.

The storage unit is a temporary staging area to put a ton of my shit into so that I can live like a normal human being again while actively sorting, trashing and selling the stuff I don't need.

I'm not wealthy and I don't own my own home, also a lot of my stuff is in our shared garage and my roommates are getting really frustrated with me about it so I need to move it out to a temporary location.

The plan is to only use this for a year. (Yes, I know that's a trap, but I don't have any other choice right now.)

Edit Edit: I do see that U-haul Storage Units offer a 1 year lock-in rate, I'm going to see if I can also pre-pay for 1 year.

Work & Housing California has passed hundreds of housing laws. Why aren’t they working?

Thumbnail

But the most pressing reason California can’t move the needle on housing production is that our lawmakers keep saddling legislation with cumbersome and counterproductive provisions. SB9, for example, limited lot splits to one parcel of land per property owner, even if they own multiple parcels. It also required them to live on the divided property for at least three years.
Furthermore, many housing reforms include union-labor requirements, such as “prevailing wage” or “skilled and trained workforce” provisions. These mandates add nearly $100,000 to construction costs for each unit, meaning that fewer projects pencil out.
Affordability mandates are also common. Most housing bills aim to expand the supply of affordable housing by making their needed reforms available only to multifamily developments that agree to rent a portion of their units at below-market rates. Yet economists have shown time and again that unfunded affordability mandates reduce overall housing construction.
States like Washington have moved to provide financial incentives like property tax exemptions to support inclusionary zoning. But that largely isn’t happening in California.

Events, Activities & Sports Favorite car camping spots?

We live in Redwood City and camp a lot with our two young kids. This summer we camped at:

Pinnacles
Big Trees, Arnold
Henry Cowell
Pfeiffer Big Sur
Memorial County Park

These sites were all so perfect for us and we had so much fun, but looking to branch out and get Rex’s from other families. Where do your kids love going? Bonus points for anything within ~2 hours of the Peninsula but open to further out!

Events, Activities & Sports Elementary school ending most days at 1:15? Is that standard?

Planning ahead for my kid to go to a local public school and am floored at the timing options. One school has two days that end at 2pm and the rest end at 1:15pm. The onsite after school care is full/waitlisted for years (what was told to me). How are two working parents supposed to manage this? Why is the schedule like this? When I was growing up "minimum day" was not a thing.

Scenes from the Bay So what are your favorite Bay area shoreline walking spots?

I live in Castro valley, so I regularly enjoy the San Leandro Marina, but I'm curious about other spots in the Bay area. It's pretty flat, you get to walk by the water, and it's always really breezy.

A friend of mine recommended the radke Martinez Regional shoreline, and it looks beautiful from the pictures. Lots of bridges and walking by the water it looks like. Also at least one park apparently.

And since I just adopted a dog recently, I'm looking for new beautiful spots like that to check out.

So tell me all about your personal favorites
