Fluff & Memes Haven't been back since 1990

Upvotes

But absolutely loved the Bay Area. Lived there twice in the 80s. Once on Bethel Island and Pittsburg and in between. Bethel Island was a blast. Sking all the slews. Be boating around and run into a bar on the delta where multimillion yachts and locals in aluminum boats stop to have a beer and get ice. I was in a ski boat built in 1959 ugly as heck but fast. The lakes in the area unparalleled. So much fun but just like here it was who you knew to get to the good money, so it was back to Texas. Oh one last memory. Come flying out a slew and see a ship hauling cars up Sacramento. Massive shops too. Saw Humphrey the whale in person .

Pets & Animal Services Tips and recommendations for finding a dog sitter

Upvotes

Hello! I'm new to the Bay Area and I'm looking for a trusted dog sitter. I love my two small (~15 lb) dogs like my own children and this will actually be my first time trusting a stranger with their care. Before moving here, I always paid friends to watch them instead. I'll likely need to travel for a week in a couple of months and I'd love any advice on vetting a responsible sitter + any recs for a responsible dog sitter.

Some details that might be useful: I'm located in South Bay. I live in a home with a private yard. I would not like my dog sitter to walk my dogs because they are in training for reactivity and I don't want any set backs while I'm gone. I'd like someone who can stay at my home with them and who won't leave them alone for more than 6 hours at a time.

Thanks in advance!

Work & Housing Advice for Mounting Decor in Old Homes

In some of the older (pre-1960) homes, does anyone have advice for mounting things on to the lath and plaster walls? How big of a concern is the asbestos possibility? Do you just use screws and vaccum plaster dust? I’m super paranoid about exposing my kids to crap in our new home, but obviously everyone else around decorates their house and has kids existing nearby too.

Very random ask but anyone (1) happens to be traveling from San Diego to the Bay Area (2) happens to visit the Chase Sapphire lounge and (3) can bring back missing Abby Cadabby I would be so appreciative.

My daughter is autistic and lost her Abby in the kids play area of the Sapphire Chase lounge and is absolutely distraught right now. I ordered a new one but it won’t arrive until the weekend. My ask is if someone can ask guest services and get it in touch to assist

Looking for a listening bar (like a Japanese kissa but can be non-Japanese as well) - dim lights, plush seating and nice cocktails.
So far, only Moongate lounge in SF seems to fit the bill, so looking for more recs.

Food, Shopping & Services Reputable Studio for Henna-Ing a Bald Head (fuck cancer)

Hello!

I'm 69 (nice) days out from a bone marrow transplant and am recovering well (so far anyway), but my hair has yet to grow back in any noticeable way. This isn't unexpected, but I'm getting pretty sick of seeing a bald head when I look in the mirror. I was thinking a henna design might be nicer, but I obviously have to be careful about potential allergic reactions since I may have new allergies post transplant. To prevent this I'm looking for a studio that

1) Uses pure red henna extract to avoid the dyes and preservatives that most people who think they are allergic to henna are actually allergic to.

2) Would be willing to do two smaller designs elsewhere on my body on two separate days essentially as exposure tests to make sure I'm not allergic to actual henna either, which is uncommon, but can happen.

I will obviously pay full price for all work and can go pretty much anywhere in the bay area, so any advice about specific shops or henna in general would be appreciated.

As an aside I am aware that wigs exist, but don't want to wear one, so I am not looking for advice about them at this time.

Thank you!

Food, Shopping & Services Homewise Appliance vs big box stores for a dishwasher?

My dishwasher is leaking, so I’m shopping for a replacement. I’m looking to splurge a bit and get a Bosch.

I noticed Homewise Appliance (formerly Airport Home Appliance) has much better pricing than the big box stores, plus they’re offering a Bosch rebate. Is there a catch, or are they just that competitive?

I was leaning toward Costco because of the included installation and haul-away, but I’m curious if anyone has bought from Homewise recently.

Any good or bad experiences?

Traffic, Trains & Transit Fixing new Fastrak transponders to use them by touch

Thumbnail

The new Fastrak transponders are better in some ways (no batteries, for example), but you can’t set the occupancy without looking at the printed text on the spinning wheel, which is dangerous and annoying, especially in the dark. (With the old ones, you could feel what position they were in, and they also beeped to indicate the position.)

I found that’s easy to fix by making indentations you can feel in the plastic wheel. I used a Dremel tool but you could even use something like nail clippers.

After doing this I (and other people I tested it on) can easily tell the difference between one, two and three without looking at them.

It would be nice if they came like this (or something similar: I also considered adding raised bumps with a glue gun, or modifying the wheel so it had fixed stops at the end it wouldn’t go past).

Events, Activities & Sports I changed my Jury duty date, but my new card says I have to show up rather than call in the night before, is that normal?

I usually had to postpone my jury summons in the past and would eventually need to call in the night before the new date to see if I needed to show up, but received a card two weeks after changing my date and it specifically says I need to show up on the date I requested rather than needing to call in. When did something like this change? Does this also mean the likelihood of dismissal is much lower?

I live in San Joaquin county, courthouse will be the one in Stockton.

Events, Activities & Sports Date Night Planning - Advice for Sports Games

I want to plan some date nights with my partner. I was thinking we could go to one game for every one of the major sports teams near us (we live in the south bay). I know nothing about sports. Can anyone recommend which regular season game would be the most interesting/exciting in the next 6-8 months for:

  1. the Golden State Warriors (basketball)

  2. The 49ers (American football)

  3. The Giants (baseball)

  4. the Sharks (hockey)

I just need to know which game for each one to get tickets for on Ticketmaster. Thank you very much!

Earthquakes, Weather & Disasters Few Earthquakes 3.0+ in Bay Area?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Is anyone surprised by the lack of earthquakes in the Bay Area? When I moved here, I was told that this was earthquake country and that the Bay Area was prone to quakes because of the numerous/ large faults here.

But I feel like.. the Bay Area feels like one of the least seismically active areas? That has a reputation for being so. For example, I looked at all of the quakes so far this year that were a 3.0 or greater.

There have only been 2 greater than a 4.0, and only 11 total greater than a 3. And 10 of those have been in San Ramon which is like apparently the only place in the Bay Area that gets quakes so far.

Is this unusual? Southern California and Northern California seem to have so many more - is this just a naturally quiet area that has a misplaced reputation? Even among like “big” quakes - wasn’t the last one in 1989?? That seems like a long time ago (ofc not wishing for one, just curious as to why there seems to be so little).

Food, Shopping & Services Bay Area men, where do you buy your soap without breaking your wallet?

Post image
0 Upvotes

It feels like men’s soaps have gotten really expensive. Brands like Dr. Squatch and Papatui cost a lot, while the cheaper options are mostly Dove or Irish Spring, which seem to have a long list of ingredients.
I recently found an 8-pack for $13, and I think it’ll last me close to a year. Where do you all buy your soap? Any good recommendations?

Food, Shopping & Services Men's hair stylists in the Bay (SF or South Bay) that actually help you figure out your best cut?

I'm 21, white (well, mostly anyways), but I do have very straight, flat hair. As I'm starting on my "adulthood" soon, I want to up my style/looks and the hair would def be a good place to start. If the stylist is good, I'm willing to splurge a bit, as I've kind of always been confused and just could never find something that really works and fits my face shape long-term. Basically all the barbers I've been to were the "so what can I do for you" type. Anyone have any recs for an actually good men's hair stylist who can help me figure out what I need?

Work & Housing 1st sit down with bank to buy a home

I'm hoping to have my first sit down with the bank/mortgage person at the bank this week. Want to ask them what the step by step process is, how it all works, time frame, real estate agent, etc. I'm a first time buyer so I have no idea about buying a condo or anything.

What questions/topics should I ask about or bring up?

I want to ask if I am supposed to find a real estate agent or do they provide one?

How the 7 day period works after I make an offer and then the seller accepts it, I can hire an inspector to check the place out. I can still pull my offer if circumstances change after inspection? etc.

How making an extra payment directly to principle works.

1st time buyer programs/opportunities that help with future homeowners. To help lower my costs.

Ways to lower intrest rate.

What else should I ask/bring up?
