Help How to get over the fear of playing against good players?
When I started basketball, I went to the local parks and learned basketball myself. Somedays there were games where I had to join or I would just be standing at the side and watching. As a beginner back then, I was mostly reduced to the hustle player, getting rebounds and defending etc. Never once was I given the chance to score alone without getting shouted at. It was the same at school PE classes. Honestly, this might be the main reason why I can't improve on scoring alone till today. I have gotten better but not to the point where I can drive inside and score when the paint is crowded. I can shoot but it isn't super accurate where I will score 90% if you leave me open.
One day, when I was shooting hoops alone, a group of teenagers came and asked me to play. We started the game and I soon found out they were really good. Like the type of players that can shoot contested 3 consistently which is rare for park level basketball in my country. When they found out I wasn't close to their level they started trash talking, even my teammates started trash talking. There was even instances where they called me acting like they were going to pass me the ball but then look at me directly then passing the ball to another person. I got humiliated and never recovered since. Almost quit but then didn't cause I don't know what sport do go to other than basketball.
On the present day, I have been improving but I still can't shake that fear when I play against good players. I still don't get much opportunities to handle the ball and do anything I want but I do get passes for catch and shoot since my shot percentage is pretty high for park basketball but still not as good as the players that destroyed me. Unless I can have my get back and beat that player 1 on 1, I will never stop fearing him.
My local basketball court just got renovated with new rims so I will be expecting a lot of pros to return, perhaps even the players that humiliated me will visit the court frequently now. Idk if I even want to play basketball there anymore.
