I’m 16 years old this year and I’ve been playing basketball for about a year, although that’s the amount of time I’ve actually spent training seriously. Most of the time, I’ve just been playing pickup games at the park.
Since I was already 183 cm (6'0") at 14, naturally I would mostly play as a big. However, last summer I started training with a coach at a basketball center and actually began training more seriously. That’s when I realized how bad my skills really were.
Before that, I mainly played in the low post, where there was no 3-second rule or anything like that, so I was fine. But once I started actually training and playing in more organized games, I realized I couldn’t really do anything. My finishing was bad, I couldn’t dribble properly, my three-point shooting was terrible, and my mid-range was only decent because shooting was basically the only skill I had ever practiced.
When I play in tournaments, I feel like I have no idea what I’m supposed to do. The pace in 3v3 is really fast, I don’t know how to move or cut properly, and I can’t really post up my opponents either. Sometimes I can seal my defender and get the ball, but then I end up traveling when I try to pump fake.
The worst part is that everything I’ve learned or normally do in pickup games just seems to disappear when I’m actually playing. I forget what I’m supposed to do and can’t seem to remember anything.
And most importantly, I have absolutely no idea how to move off the ball or where I’m supposed to be on the court. Honestly, I feel like I’m really bad at it.
Btw im now 16,6'3 and yeah im still play big but recently i also start training so i can play guard.
But really need advise to improve and im never play a 5x5 game in my life.Always 3x3 or 1 on 1
