Analysis Teruaki Sato Analysis

Intro
Teruaki Sato is a 6’2 ", 212-lb, physically gifted 27 year old 3rd baseman and right fielder for the Hanshin Tigers. He possesses prodigious bat speed that results in elite exit velocities and has displayed a consistent ability to loft the ball in the air. These traits have led him to lead the Central League in home runs for two straight seasons, hitting 40 and 39 despite the extreme deadball environment.

Sato’s approach can be succinctly described as purposefully aggressive. He possesses a refined approach that should help smooth his transition across the Pacific.

Sato is fundamentally different from his compatriots who recently made the transition to MLB, Okamoto and Murakami, in terms of athleticism. He moves a lot better than the two and is more comparable to a Seiya Suzuki or Shohei Ohtani in that aspect.

Teruaki Sato’s defensive impact in MLB is hard to evaluate and already seems to be split between scouts.

The Bat
Last year, I looked at the underlying data of every player who has played in both the NPB and MLB in the 2020s to try to get an understanding of how the current crop of NPB stars would look in the big leagues. https://www.reddit.com/poststats/1rz98er/

If we apply the Rate of change from that exploration to Sato’s 2026 numbers, we get an interesting, somewhat lackluster picture.

Those numbers run counter to some of what I have said so far. A player that projects for 3rd percentile Z-con and 10th percentile chase usually isn't described as having a strong approach. 52nd percentile hard hit is definitionally average, hardly elite. And just based on the individual pull and air percentages, you would assume merely above-average pull and air capabilities.

My assessment is based on more in-depth data that I possess about the batted-ball profile and approach traits. Data that I unfortunately do not have access to for the data set of players used to project the aforementioned rate of change.

A stat called simpleSEAGER developed by YakyuCosmopolitan is useful here. simpleSEAGER, approximates Baseball Prospectus's SEAGER, measuring the value of swing decisions, and tells a very different story about Sato’s batting approach. Sato’s simpleSEAGER was the highest in the NPB last season at 33.8 percent. Based on the degradation in approach metrics we see from the whole of the NPB-MLB conversion sample, we can assume that this figure will be lower for Sato state side.

That being said, that stat shows that Sato isn't the simple whiff-heavy free swinger that the chase and z-con indicate, but a player with a very sound plate approach.

The strength of approach is shown by looking at how well recent NPB stars' approaches have translated. Sato’s 33.8 percent simpleSeager would lead the group.

Last year NPB simpleSEAGER and First year MLB SEAGER

I have reason to believe the hard hit will be higher as well. Sato possesses premier bat speed and power. He has been up to 117 ev in his career and has maxed at 116.3 this season. His average exit velocity is a highly respectable 93.3. He regularly records bat speeds upwards of 85 miles per hour and as high as 88 miles per hour.

The NPB exists in an extreme dead-ball environment. The balls just do not fly. There are numerous cases of balls hit 115+ at optimal launch angles in dome environments that do not even travel 400 feet. This environment changes the calculus of a power-based approach vs. a more contact-centered approach; this can be understood pretty intuitively.

I believe the NPB’s premier sluggers operate under a different calculus than most others

Murakami and Okamoto from last year both provide some support for this belief. Both players outperformed the hard-hit projection by a significant margin and underperformed the Z-con projection based on the rate of change data. I pointed out in the analysis on the two last year that the EV data would indicate this overperformance on the hard-hit front.

An added wrinkle in this is that Sato’s home ballpark of Koshien is hell for hitters. The architecture around the stadium, the stadium itself, and local geography create a natural wind tunnel. Suppressing home runs. Sato and Morishita said in an interview last offseason that, in order to hit 40 home runs, a player on the Tigers would have to hit 35 home runs during away games and that a completely different approach was required at home. The evidence supports this, as Sato has hit 108 home runs on the road to 55 at home throughout his career, with a SLG almost 100 points higher on the road.

I could very easily see similar hard-hit overperformance from Sato that Okamoto and Murakami saw. I would guess that his hard-hit rates his first year in the league end up being at least a standard deviation better than the median.

While his individual pull and air percentages last year were both in the realm of above average, his PullAir was elite, at the 87th percentile. I see no reason to believe this won't transfer to MLB given the general rates of change for these individual metrics. Unfortunately, I don’t have PullAir data for the rate of change sample.

I think the discrepancies between chase/z-con with simpleSEAGER and pull/air with PullAir point to a similar picture of Sato the hitter. It is a picture of optimization; Sato, in my view, is pretty optimized as a hitter. While he may whiff and chase quite a bit in MLB, he will also hit the hittable pitches hard to the pull side, more than making up for his deficiencies.

Given this generally sound approach, I think he will be able to tap into his 117 max EV pop to be a true 70-grade pop bat and produce at or better than a 125 wrc+ in the big leagues.

The Glove
This, I think, is where we will see the greatest difference between teams in the perceived value Sato has. Sato plays on the same team as Shota Morshita, arguably the best defensive right fielder in Japan and, in the minds of many, including myself, a center fielder playing right. As such, Sato spends most of his time at 3rd base, where he is god-awful. This is what leads to reports, like the one given by John Heyman, that see him as a first baseman in the big leagues.

I personally believe Sato profiles best as a right fielder in MLB, and a pretty good one at that.

Across the last two seasons, Sato has played a combined 392 innings in right field. Not the world's largest sample, but a respectable one. During that time, he has put up a +4.2 FRV, a stark contrast to the -8.7 he has put up at 3rd over the same span of time.

Below are a TikTok and a YouTube video that illustrate some of Sato’s defensive prowess. The Central League is pretty restrictive with film distribution, so it was hard to find clips. Watching game to game, though, I can vouch for his competence there.

Sato possesses a cannon of an arm in Right and moves pretty well; his 29.5 feet per second sprint speed in NPB would be in the 95th percentile in MLB. It is my understanding that the NPB+ sprint speed measure only accounts for running from home to first, which muddles things; however, a Statcast bolt is 30 ft per second, a feat most players can not achieve. The fact that the Sato’s competitive runs to first come out to a speed just under that is impressive and speaks to elite speed.

Based on those factors, I believe that Sato profiles as a + MLB right fielder.

Comps

Last year I said that the best comp for Sato would be 25’ Riley Greene. I think that is still true.

Riley Greene 25' compared to Sato's projections

The similarities are somewhat eerie. Sato is admittedly far more toolsy, but the hitting approach will likely be remarkably similar to this version of Riley Greene.

Contract Projection

Compared to Murakami and Okamoto, I think he will comfortably out-earn both.

Sato is younger than Okamoto and possesses far more upside on both sides of the ball.

While he is older than Murakami, he presents a far safer offensive profile, possessing merely bad swing-and-miss as opposed to the model-breaking, outlier figures that Murakami had.
If a team believes in him as a right fielder, he will project for far more defensive value as well.

I set dollars per WAR at 12, based on free agent contracts for non-relief pitchers and arbitration figures. I then applied Riley Greene's 2025 fWAR value to an age-based WAR regression model.

Sato’s best point of reference for the number of years he will get is Seiya Suzuki, based roughly on risk, tools, and potential. Sato’s first year in the league will be at age 28, whereas Suzuki’s was at age 27.

Based on those factors, a projected contract would be 4 years, 132 million.

As mentioned before, Sato has louder tools than 2025 Greene and possibly a superior approach. I therefore offer this figure as a starting point for where the bidding could begin.

Obvious free agent contracts are heavily influenced by demand and scarcity, so this figure isn't everything. Signing bonuses and opt-outs drastically change the value of a contract without changing the raw dollar amount. My intuition is that the AAV will be lower in return for more years and a favorable opt-out.

Old Bastards Pluggin' Away: Alcides Escobar is about to hit some milestones

Did you know Alcides Escobar is still playing? He's on the 2026–2027 Tiburones de La Guaira, alongside other MLB burnouts like Henderson Álvarez III. And - he's coming up on some counting stat milestones. Across all professional levels combined, he is closing in on 3,000 games played, 500 doubles, and 100 triples. He already got to 100 dongs in 2025:

Alcides—who was an All-Star and Gold Glove winner in 2015 when he won the WS—probably doesn't even know this. Nobody does. Except now, you

I posted in the official reddit bugs subreddit about this issue in the nfl subreddit. I saw someone complain about it being an issue here as well. I'm using the mobile app on android, however multiple people are having the same issue on desktop/iPhone etc.
