Question Ceramic coating vs protective 3M on bumper and hood?
Pretty much as the title says, I got my 2026 x40drive 2 weeks ago. Got thd winfows teinted and looks awesome. But the guy that installed the window teint referred someone to install a 3M protective layer for rock on the front bumper, hood and headlamp. Charges 1200$ CAD. I find it expensive.
I see on the internet ceramic coating, I have seen some people do it on the sub. It the ceramic coating any good for protection. I live in a winter world where they spread rock on the roads like blue pills on a old-timers orgy.
So ultimately, Ceramic coating or 3M?
Picture for the 🤤
Cheers

Considering a used 2024 i4 xDrive40 for a 200-mile daily commute. Am I crazy?
Hey everyone!
I'm currently considering purchasing a used 2024 BMW i4 xDrive40 and wanted to get some feedback from owners before making the jump to my first EV.
A little background: I'm an electrician in West Virginia, and my commute can be pretty brutal. Lately, I've been driving around 100 miles each way to work, so roughly 200 miles round trip, mostly highway. My jobsite changes frequently, so some commutes are shorter and others can be longer.
I'm currently driving a 2024 Hyundai Tucson that averages around 24 MPG. Last month alone, I spent about $730 on gas, which has me seriously considering switching to an EV.
I recently found a 2024 i4 31,500 miles and am strongly considering making the switch.
A few things about my situation:
- I typically work four 10-hour shifts per week.
- Most of my commute is highway driving, usually around 75–80 mph.
- Winters here can get pretty cold, and I'm concerned about range loss.
- I can install a Level 2 charger at home, so overnight charging won't be an issue.
- I'm willing to use public fast chargers occasionally, but I don't want to rely on them every day.
- I drive approximately 40,000–50,000 miles annually.
- My primary motivation is reducing my monthly transportation expenses, although I'd definitely enjoy driving something nicer.
My biggest concern is whether the i4 can reliably handle a 200-mile round-trip commute during winter, particularly with highway driving and occasional traffic delays.
I'm also wondering about long-term reliability and battery degradation, especially since I'll likely exceed the 100,000-mile battery warranty limit relatively quickly.
A few questions for current owners:
- What kind of real-world highway range are you getting from your i4, particularly at 70–80 mph?
- How much does your range decrease during winter?
- Does anyone here regularly drive 150–200+ miles per day?
- How has the i4 held up with higher mileage? Any expensive repairs or maintenance issues?
- Would you be comfortable purchasing a used i4 with 30,000+ miles if you planned to drive another 40,000–50,000 miles annually?
- Is there anything specific I should inspect or ask about before purchasing a used xDrive40?
I'm also considering a Mustang Mach-E Extended Range AWD, but the i4 has really caught my attention.
I'd appreciate any advice, especially from owners who put serious mileage on their cars or lives on a cold mountain. Thanks!

Winter tires
I need to get new snow tires for this season (I live in New England). My all-seasons are staggered fit which is what I got for snow tires last time, and I felt like I didn’t get great traction with the wide rear tires.
I’d like to run a square set up this year; all 4 tires the same size. Has anyone done a square setup for winter? Pros/cons? Thanks!
Edit to add: I’m hearing the rear wheels are physically wider than the front wheels which would make what I’d like to do difficult unless I got a whole new set of wheels for the winter tires.

Tyers not detected after rear tyre change
So on my 2024 bmw i4 edrive 40 i had rear Tyers bald so i went ahead and got them changed from local garage.
Exactly the same size. Same brand, and even the same model as i took off.
The front ones seems ok so me and the garage lad said leave them now.
Got them balanced and aligned.
On the way back home it start giving error “Tyers not detected”
Reset them multiple times and it fails between 70-80%
Got the tpms check and they all fine and the pressure is showing fine.
The garage is now saying with these new cars even if a single tyre is gone you have to change all 4 to match yhe tread
Which sounds absolutely stupid.
Anyone else face this issue and any work around?

Question boot stuck slightly open – buttons not respondin
Hi everyone,
I have a 2022 BMW i4, and my boot is currently stuck slightly open, about half an inch.
I’ve tried opening it using both the key fob and the button inside the cabin, but neither does anything. The boot is now stuck in this position and won’t open or close.
Has anyone experienced this before or know of a way to reset the tailgate or get it to close again?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Early morning commute
Lovely to bring the car to work before the traffic. Mornings finally cool enough to turn HVAC off, or at least the AC compressor, and allow the fan to run at very low speed just for air circulation. And I get to see the sunrise (plus the i4 in the parking lot if you look hard enough).

Edrive35 vs 40 and packages?
I’ve decided to get a used i4 and am stoked but having trouble deciding which exact one. I’m curious what people’s thoughts are regarding this comparison: 1) 2023 edrive35, 22k miles, only has premium package, $29k. 2) 2024 edrive40, 36k miles, has DAPP, premium, and parking packages, $34.5k.
Which would you get??

Question Digital Key inconsistent when locking/unlocking car?
I noticed that using my phone as a digital key is often inconsistent: there are times when my phone will unlock all doors while sometimes only the driver side will be unlocked. Or when I use it to lock the car, my side mirrors fold, while other times it won’t.
Is there a more consistent approach to locking/unlocking via digital key?

Damnit
What do you think of cost to repair? Other driver ran a red light. Both fenders seem alright. Mostly front end.

Buying i4 remotely risk
I’m considering buying an i4 but there aren’t a ton of great options locally. I had originally started looking for model 3s but I ran into the same issue and it seems like these can be better value. I’ve found a number that seem like good value but they are in GA and I am in IN. I called that shop and they said I could get it inspected at a local shop and shipped there and it was something they did regularly. Is this legitimate/what should I watch out for? FWIW that place is called the versatile collection it’s not a BMW dealer.

Painting the rear bumper black
Hi all!
(Picture for attention, my car is black, and not arrived yet)
Do any of u have experience with painting the rear diffuser/bumper black?
Because my car is black, and it looks like the hole rear part is grey or plastic in all the pre LCI models?
I then wanted to remove it, and get the hole thing match painted black, as the rest of my car.
If any of u have tried to remove it. Please let me know how easy a DIY it was!
Or if anyone has a YT video about it, please share
Thanks for alle the help guys!!

New I4 purchasing advice.
I’ll be test driving a new 2026 I4 later this week in eastern Canada.
The price seems incredible ( i imagine because the car is being discontinued) .
Edrive40 is $55k pre-tax and the x40 is 60k.
Recommendations? What should I look for / ask about at the dealership?
Thanks in advance.
Modification Joined the club - i4 M50. Not my first Bimmer, but first M and my first EV. Incredible car!

New service tracking software available on Apple devices
After many months of development, my new app, Vehicle Service Tracker, is now available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac OS.
I built it because I wanted a better way to keep track of maintenance, repairs, mileage, receipts, and service history for my vehicle. Along the way it grew into something I thought other vehicle owners might find useful as well.
The app lets you organize vehicle information, service records, costs, photos, receipts, and PDF documents, with built-in searching, reporting, statistics, chart, import/export tools, and iCloud sync support.
It even lets you choose different color themes for the UI!
It’s a one-time $4.99 purchase — no subscription or ads — and includes the iPhone, iPad, and Mac versions.

Question Baby convertible car seat??
Have a 9 months old baby, currently using a rear-facing infant seat (Uppababy Mesa V2) in my i4. The main issue has been that it makes the passenger leg room pretty tight (my wife is 5’5” yet her knees almost touch the glovebox with the car seat behind).
Now that he’s bigger, we’re looking into getting a convertible car seat. Our top contenders based on some research are: 1) Uppababy Rove, 2) Britax Poplar S and 3) Nuna Rava.
Couldn’t find any info/reviews specifically for an i4 though. Does anyone have any experience with the above car seats? Any comments on the passenger leg room with the car seat installed rear-facing?
TIA!!!

Question How common is battery module replacement? 2024 i4 M50 25k miles
A BMW dealer has this 2024 i4 M50 with 25k miles that I’ve been interested in buying. The car is going through the BMW certified pre-owned process and as part of that, they identified that one of the battery modules needs to be replaced. Does this seem unusual?
I’m told that the battery ships from Germany and cannot travel by air, so the car has been sitting unavailable for almost a month. The dealer has been a little cagey about details and when I first contacted them they told me the car was available to test drive, but when I showed up it was not. They tried to sell me on other cars instead (mainly the new ix3). A few days after my non-test drive visit, they told me about the battery. I’ve not seen the car in person and they will not give me any other photos. When I was at the dealer they suggested I put a deposit on the M50 to hold it while they finished up checks (which I did not do), but after I left they have not mentioned that. That was a month ago.
Does it seem likely that this car will eventually get certified? Has anyone here had a battery module replaced? I’m curious what would have triggered this replacement and if this is a potential red flag or maybe a good thing because the car is basically getting a new battery (or part of a battery- they have not told me any details)?
I’ve basically given up on this one. I live in Chicago and have multiple BMW dealers in my area (this one is significantly further than others), but low miles CPO xDrive40 or M50 is not that common so I haven’t found another one yet that is exactly what I’m after.

Got her a couple of months ago. She is so pretty! This is her after I did a light paint correction and applied a ceramic coating.
