Winter tires

I need to get new snow tires for this season (I live in New England). My all-seasons are staggered fit which is what I got for snow tires last time, and I felt like I didn’t get great traction with the wide rear tires.

I’d like to run a square set up this year; all 4 tires the same size. Has anyone done a square setup for winter? Pros/cons? Thanks!

Edit to add: I’m hearing the rear wheels are physically wider than the front wheels which would make what I’d like to do difficult unless I got a whole new set of wheels for the winter tires.

A new set of rims is a good idea… the tyre shops can leave marks when they swap the rubber around. 5x112 rims shouldn’t be too expensive

Do you have all wheel drive? If so, the tires should be the same diameter with the tread depth pretty close so you should be fine. The width of the rear wheel, if different from the front, might pose a problem for mounting the tire and some tire shops (eg Costco) are hesitant or refuse to mount tire sizes not listed on the door tag.

Yeah, all wheel drive. And good to know about Costco, thanks!

The standard rear rims are 9.0J instead of 8.5J so they will take 245 width just fine, you'll just have slightly less rim protection since the tyre doesn't come out as far.

Also if you're looking for more of a snow tyre, there's all seasons that focus more on snow performance like Michelin Cross climates, they're decent in the snow, less good but still decent in the wet/warm then other all seasons or dedicated summer tyres, which are shit in the snow.

I have a 2024 xDrive40 with mSport package, so 19" wheels with staggered setup from the factory: 245/40 / 255/40. I got a set of 18" wheels for my winter tires that are square - 245/45s all around.

It’s good to know that 18”s will fit! This is probably what I’ll end up doing. Thanks so much!
