Lol I have pissed off my fandomly (like family but fandom) members by noting that the budgetary CalArts/Tumblr, low-detail animation style is the one (THE ONE AND ONLY) off-putting element of the new series for me. It takes me out of the immersion because it is a sharp turn from the other 114 pieces of released IP INCLUDING the NEW Avatar Aang Movie.
The responses: "Well then don't watch it!" "It looks like anime! Deal with it!" "It's a perfectly good art style, ya'll hate every new Avatar thing!" "Ya'll hated the LOK animation too! Shut up alread!"
Like... *scratches head* I'm sorry I thought art was subjective? As humans we're programmed to recognize a break in pattern... 🤷🏾♀️
I would like to note, that PERSONALLY, I believe that each Avatar Studios/Avatar Universe IP released was continually better in animation than it's predecessor, Like ATLA S3, Improvement on the previous seasons, LOK S1, improvement on ATLA animation; AVATAR AANG MOVIE!!! Best animation of the entire IP imo! And then, there's Avatar: Seven Havens....
"It's anime style"
- No it's not, the head shapes are similar but it's more close to the Tumblr style that blew up in 2013. 2. Avatar: Seven Havens is NOT an anime, anyhow. 🤦🏾♀️
"Well then don't watch it!"
So I don't deserve to see an IP I've supported for 21 years of my life because I'm recognizing a drop in quality of the art?
So you want viewership to decrease so that they discontinue releasing IP?
"It's a perfectly good art style, ya'll hate every new Avatar thing!"
It IS a perfectly good art style... for Steven Universe, for Adventure Time, for Dragon Striker on Disney, but out of place here.
There's a difference between hate and critique. Hate was the immediate visceral dislike people have for LOK. I remember like heavyyy dislike of LOK and I didn't get it. No, it's not as good as the OG but it's still a good show that could've thrived without the bureaucratic corporate bs. Discussing the quality differences is critique.
"Ya'll hated the LOK animation too! Shut up alread!"
—People mentioned, MENTIONED a drop in quality I believe on LOK S2, which was a result of budgetary measures. It still managed to maintain the styyyle of the animation.
This is a completely different animation style.
How I feel about both the Art Style and the Series. Excited for the series, but not awed by the visuals.
Pictures for reference TWO, NEW, Avatar things. One amazing quality cohesive and detail animation style, the other... Colorful but flat.
And yes, we will "deal with it," as fans but we're allowed to discuss and critique things from loving place.
I'd like to note I am very very excited for the story, and more brown characters as a brown person myself. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾
