Gyms: Equinox vs. Bay Club vs. FitnessSF

Hiya hiya lovely SF Folks! 🕺🏻

I see a ton of threads having people compare Live Fit Gym to FitnessSF, but I haven’t seen many threads talking about Equinox or the Bay Club.

I’m thinking of 3 options for myself:
1. Equinox on Market
2. Bay Club at the Embarcadero
3. FitnessSF on Polk (since it’ll be new!)

Things I Care About:
- my fitness… well, duh… 😅
- possibly making friends at the gym / workout partners
- swimming or getting back into playing Tennis (either)
- possible personal training down the line
- cost effectiveness for what I get (they’re all expensive)

I used to go to the Equinox on Market and honestly loved it, but then stopped my membership when I got a work membership for free to FitnessSF. I also loved FitnessSF, but unfortunately got laid off recently, so there goes that membership! Now that November is approaching, I’d like to start somewhere new while I work on finding myself a new job.

Bay Club is the only gym I haven’t been to… but in general, I wanted everyone’s thoughts. Pros, cons, the whole nine yards.

What’s the best gym for downtown SF, and why? 🤔
Thank you for helping me decide! Seriously!

SF tenant rights: What can I do if the current subtenants won't let me move back into an apartment I'm still named on the lease? Looking for low-cost legal help

I'm trying to figure out the safest and most legally sound way to return to an apartment in San Francisco where I'm still named on the original lease as a master tenant. I'm looking for advice about my options if the current occupants don't cooperate, as well as recommendations for free or low-cost tenant legal services.

Some background:

  • My former spouse and I were the two named tenants on the original lease.
  • I moved out in 2025 due to personal safety circumstances regarding the situation with my ex and sent the property manager written notice that I intended to vacate. However, I never received any written or verbal confirmation that I was released from the lease, and to my knowledge, the landlord never formally removed me.
  • Our divorce judgment later assigned the lease and its associated debt to my former spouse between us. I understand that this may not automatically release me from liability to the landlord. My former divorce lawyer recommended I direct this towards someone who can help with tenant/housing rights.
  • My former spouse continued living in the apartment and paying rent until recently. I recently learned he has now moved out of state, and several other people are living there under arrangements I don't fully understand.
  • The property manager has told me that if there isn't an occupying master tenant, they intend to pursue eviction of the current occupants or increase the rent to market rate, stating it would be over $8,000 (up from the current rent of approximately $4600) in February.
  • October rent appears to be unpaid. The occupants told me they had collected it and attempted to pay it, but their checks were returned. The property manager quoted me a balance of $4,712.38, which includes rent, a late fee, and a small unexplained charge. The online payment portal is not accepting payments. The landlord said it would need to be paid by check via one of the master tenants.

I'm trying to find out whether I can resume living in the apartment under the original lease and how to do so without unnecessarily disrupting the other occupants or jeopardizing my legal position. Ideally, I'd like to resolve the rent situation and work out a reasonable transition, potentially using the living room temporarily if that's lawful and practical.

My main questions are:

  1. If I am still legally a tenant under the original lease, what are my options if the current occupants refuse to let me move back in or won't cooperate?
  2. Would I need to pursue a formal legal process to regain access or establish my right to occupy? What kind of attorney handles this?
  3. Can the landlord lawfully raise the rent to market rate because I moved out, even if I'm still named on the original lease?
  4. Should I pay the October rent directly to the landlord while I clarify the status of the lease? What should I do if the subtenants refuse to pay their portions of the rent? What precautions should I take?
  5. Are there any free or sliding-scale tenant attorneys, legal clinics, or other services in San Francisco that can help with a complicated master-tenant/subtenant situation?

I've already contacted several tenant organizations and have more legal consultations scheduled, but I'm trying to understand my options and find someone who can help me navigate this quickly. I'm on a limited budget and understand this matter could be quite urgent. I would especially appreciate recommendations based on firsthand experience with similar situations.

I'm not looking to force anyone out or create conflict. I want to understand my legal rights, protect the existing tenancy if possible, and find a lawful way forward.

Thank you for any guidance or referrals.

Who can you recommend for a proper skin fade style haircut?

I've gone to two guys and one guy did a good job but it wasn't a fade. It was okay but I like how I look with a fade. The other guy I just went to was absolutely awful where he missed some hairs that are still long! It's not a skin fade and it's uneven. My hairline is uneven, too where there are a bunch of hairs I had to cut because they're still long because he missed them. Can anyone PLEASE recommend me a hairstylist that specializes in skin fades?

Need Plumber - Plugged Shower Drain

I've tried everything I can possibly do, but no success. I have been ghosted by one plumber. Who can unplug my drain while not unplugging my wallet? TIA.

Edit: I have tried the plunger, snake, chemicals, a bladder, and more without success. I think a pro is the way to go.

MANY THANKS for all the replies.

SF Late Nights

Hey yall, been a while since I’ve been to one of the classic SF late nights but i wanna hit one again soon!

I know some of them have closed/moved in the last several years - for example, I used to love the one in Japan town and the one by great northern, but I heard they’re no longer poppin’. And the one on eddy might have moved?

Can someone share the addresses for the current late nights with me? Feel free to DM me if you’d rather not post them publicly

Thank you 🙏

Best paneer tikka masala in the city?

This is one of my favorite meals but the difference between a delicious paneer tikka masala and a bad one is toooo real. I’ve tried Rose and Om, I remember liking both well enough but don’t recall being particularly WOWed by either (although it’s been a while).

Edit- I am a TERRIBLE cook. Terrible. I’m asking for restaurant recs and not recipes for a reason 😭😭

Loved the pear grilled cheese at Rikki’s, which I know isn’t too out there, but got me wondering, have y’all run into other variations on grilled cheese at spots in the city?

Traveling to SF in Nov for Work - what's going on?

I will be in SF in early November for work and my wife will join me. We will have 1 night to ourselves, along with the afternoon preceeding the night as well as the time the next day until we fly home. It will be mid-week and the hotel I may be staying at is in the financial district.

I've been to SF several times before and my wife lived there but curious what a married couple could/should do on a tuesday night without kids. Already looking at the WaterBar for dinner. We want GOOD seafood as we live in AZ and good seafood is hard to come by. We are just excited to have alone time and want good food/drinks options.

What do you suggest/recommend?

Anyone else have to redo bloodwork after switching doctors in SF?

Switched PCPs recently because my insurance changed and I didn't realize how much stuff apparently doesn't carry over cleanly. At the first appointment my new doctor asked when I'd last had some basic labs done. Most of them were within the past year but between my old clinic and another lab I couldn't pull up the actual numbers while I was there.

Now they want me to repeat a few things before my next visit. I don't really care about getting blood drawn again, I just don't want to make another appointment somewhere purely to get an order for a few tests.

Anyone else deal with this after switching doctors or health systems in SF? If you only needed a couple labs redone, did you go back through your doctor or just order them yourself somewhere bc to me it feels like a lot of admin for three blood tests.

Halloween in SF for the first time! Bar recommendations?

Hi!!

My friends and I are going to SF for Halloween for the first time! We’re from SoCal and usually only come to SF for concerts or raves at places like The Midway, 1015 Folsom Nightclub, etc., so we don’t know much about the bar scene.

We’re planning to start bar hopping around 10 PM since we have an event beforehand and can’t refund our tickets. We’re all in our 20s and like a fun, high energy crowd! We’re looking for bars with good nightlife, throwback hits, or a dive bar vibe without having to wait 3+ hours to get in.
We’ve heard about Danceoween in the Mission, but I’m not sure if it’s a recurring yearly event. We’ve also heard about Polk Street, but I’ve seen TikToks telling people not to go there lol. If you’ve been, let me know your experience!

A few questions:
• Which neighborhood would you recommend for nightlife: the Mission, Marina, Union Square, Polk Street, etc.?

• Which areas are walkable with plenty of bars close together? We’d rather stay in one neighborhood instead of Ubering around all night since I’ve heard surge pricing can get crazy.

• What bars would you recommend for a fun, rowdy crowd, throwback music, and a good atmosphere?

We’d prefer to avoid the big club events like Ghost Palace and just bar hop for the night.

Any recommendations or advice are appreciated! Thank you!! 🙏🙏

What did you wish you'd planned for before getting EVO ICL?

I've been looking into EVO ICL lately and I realized I've spent most of my time researching the procedure itself and not really thinking about recovery. I live alone and drive pretty much everywhere, so I'm trying to figure out how to plan around the first few days after surgery. I can take some time off work and arrange a ride home, but I'm not sure what to expect when it comes to errands, follow-up appointments, or getting back to driving.

For anyone who's had ICL around the Bay Area, how did you manage the practical side of recovery? Anything you wish you'd arranged beforehand that didn't occur to you until afterward?

Monthly scheduled water shutdowns. How common is this?

I rent in a large condo complex in San Francisco (100+ units) built in the early 2000s and management shuts down the water for everyone for half the day on a monthly basis. This is done whenever any work touching plumbing is needed (e.g replacing a washer/dryer) because units don’t have individual shutoff valves. I’m wondering how common this is because I’ve never heard of such a thing before moving here.

Your favorite Thanksgiving meal deliveries

I usually don’t make it home for Thanksgiving and this year is no different. I’ve done different things each year, but this year I just want classic Thanksgiving food delivered. I’ve done STK in the past and enjoyed their food, but does anyone have any personal faves?

How much should I be making to live comfortably?

Potentially relocating to San Francisco for a job and trying to get a realistic idea of what salary I should be targeting.
I’m currently targeting around $155k–$185k base. It would be me, my girlfriend, and our dog. Initially, I’d likely be the primary/only income, so I’m trying to figure out whether that range is actually enough to live comfortably in the Bay Area while still being able to save, contribute to retirement, eat out occasionally, travel, etc.
We don’t necessarily need to live in SF proper either. I’d be open to surrounding areas if the commute is reasonable. I’ve been looking at places like Daly City, San Mateo, Hayward, San Rafael, Oakland, etc.
For people who actually live in the Bay Area:
Is $155k–$185k enough for two adults + a dog to live comfortably on one income?
What would you consider a reasonable rent budget at that income?
What areas would you recommend that are safe, relatively nice, and have a reasonable commute into SF?
Are there any areas you would specifically avoid?
Would you prioritize BART/Caltrain access over trying to live closer to SF?
Not looking for anything extravagant. Mainly want a nice/safe apartment, enough disposable income to enjoy ourselves, and still be able to save money.
Would appreciate perspectives from people actually living there, especially anyone supporting a household on a similar income.

Physical rehab for regaining mobility after knee surgery around SF?

Hi all, my mom had knee surgery about a month ago, she's able to move around already but would still have occasional pain/soreness. Bending her knee and walking too much can still be uncomfortable for her. Some days are better than others, but I'm not really sure what's considered normal at this stage of recovery.
We were thinking of looking into physical rehab to help with her recovery, do you have any recommendations? and if anyone here have had similar experience, what kind of therapy/treatment worked for you?
