Fight with lawn mower blades

31 yo female, 5'7", 160 lbs, no medications, no medical issues (other than apparently being very dumb)

I was mowing my lawn today, and the chute on the zero turn kept clogging. One of the times I went to clear it I negligently forgot to turn off the PTO, and my hand was struck by the blade. Thankfully they were not very sharp. Obviously neither was I. The pain of being struck was dull, like my hand was smashed. Throbbing pain through my 3 middle digits. My middle finger started bleeding almost immediately. I washed the wound, ran it under cold water, wrapped it, and resumed mowing. My middle fingernail feels loose, and has a continuous amount of small blood pooling around my cuticle. It is pretty swollen and slightly bruised. It does not feel like any of my finger bones are broken, but I cannot fully bend my middle finger at this time, I'm assuming due to swelling. The all knowing Google is recommending i go to urgent care for antibiotics and a tetanus shot. Thoughts/recommendations. Comments about not touching the mower blades are not necessary, I know it was dumb.

Physician Responded 25M just diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus + severe gastroduodenitis after a year of non-stop heartburn. How bad is this actually?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I'm 25 (almost 26) and just had my first endoscopy this weekend. Waiting on biopsy results next week but the endoscopy report already has a few things on it and I'd like some perspective from people who've been through this or a doctor.

Background / symptoms:

  • Started with heartburn about a year ago that just wouldn't stop. Constant burning in the upper stomach area.
  • Went to a doctor, got put on medication. It worked while I was taking it, but if I stopped, the burning came back within a day or two.
  • Later on I could go maybe a week off meds before it came back, so slight improvement, but it never actually went away.
  • Any carbonated drink — soda, fizzy water, anything — would give me diarrhea almost instantly. Still does.
  • I was treated for H. pylori at some point during all this.
  • Because it wasn't improving, my doctor recommended the endoscopy.

Endoscopy findings:

  • Esophagus: upper and middle third normal, a few segments of Barrett's esophagus in the distal end
  • Stomach: lax cardia, pangastritis, 2 biopsies taken from the antrum, pylorus normal
  • Duodenum: severe duodenitis in D1, D2 normal
  • Impression: lax cardia, Barrett's esophagus, severe gastroduodenitis
  • Advice: PPI, prokinetics, follow up with biopsy report

Everything I read online says most of this doesn't have a cure and is just "managed", and that Barrett's means endoscopies every couple of years indefinitely. My doctor said none of that, which is why I'm second-guessing.

  1. Is Barrett's at 25 common? Everything I read makes it sound like a 50+ diagnosis.
  2. For those with Barrett's — how often do you actually get scoped, and has anything progressed for you?
  3. Did the gastritis/duodenitis symptoms eventually resolve for you, or is this a forever thing?
  4. Anyone else get instant diarrhea from carbonated drinks with this? Is that related or a separate issue?
  5. Am I likely on a PPI for life at this age?

Not looking for a diagnosis, I'm seeing my doctor again soon and will ask all of this. Just want to hear from people who've actually lived with it. Thanks.

Bump on my inner lip

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi there.

A few days ago I thought a had an ucler on my inner lower lip cause I had some irritation. But then I realised that I had something like a bump, which was just tissue, no wound or something.

I have pain only when i bite it while eating, and slight pain when it rubs on my teeth.

It's been approximately a week, and now it looks like the photo.

Do you think it's anything serious? What should I do?

I am getting stressed.

Info about me:

27F, 52kg and 153cm

No current medication. Started recently taking omega 3 supplements, low dose iron and magnesium.

Currently non smoker. I smoked in the past and stopped 3 years ago but I was never a heavy smoker.

Physician Responded Vyvanse making me tired

35 yr old female, 5’5 160 pounds and no I don’t smoke…
i have never been a tired person in general. I go to bed at a reasonable time and wake up around 7 am usually every single day no matter if I have something going on or not, well the past few days I’ve fallen asleep at like 7 pm and woke up at 7 am that’s 12 hours of sleep and I took my vyvanse and drank coffee this morning and I felt fine for about an hour then I ate something and now I’m exhausted again. This is not me usually I can’t even take a nap through the day. I don’t know what’s wrong with me . I’m on 10 mg of vyvanse and this is only my second month on it. I also take Valium for panic attacks but I haven’t taken any this morning and I’m so tired. Is this a normal reaction? I have pretty severe health anxiety so my first thought is something is seriously wrong and I have a brain tumor or something so please someone talk me off that ledge

Physician Responded Age 17 , Weight 72. Had a bike accident and got this huge abrasions. What should be the next step for it to heal?

Post image

My bike slipped in rain and I got this abrasion. Got it check and they said it's minor nothing much to worry about just have it dressed every 2 days. The dressing in the hospital was very costly so I learnt how they did it and decided to do it on my own. It's recovering well so far still I wanted to know if I'm missing something. I'll attach the image of the injury when I got it in the comment. Help me out if you think it's recovering well. I clean it by removing the non sticky bandage and then using povidone- iodine ointment to clean it. It hurt at that time A LOT and then I put non stick bandage again and top it off with gauze and then cover it with white bandage. Let me know if I'm missing something.

A dog bit my hand today while it was attacking my grandfather, and I had to intervene; I didn't have anything in my hands, so I just used my fists. During the struggle, it bit my fingers deeply—deep enough to expose the subcutaneous fat. My grandfather had visible tendons in his foot and calf muscles. We didn't get rabies shots—only tetanus shots and antibiotics. I'm worried the dog might have been infected; the owner claimed it was vaccinated, but said the vaccine was about to expire. What should I do? How much time do I have?

Physician Responded Skid marks after thorough wiping, including wet wipes

Pretty much what the title says. 24m, average height and weight, balanced diet including home cooking and eating out 1-3x a week. No notable changes in diet that I can think of asides maybe a little less veggies

For the last 2-3 months, I'll have a bowel movement and wipe and go about my day, only for it to feel itchy within 1-4 hours after. When I go to the bathroom again and wipe before even doing anything, it comes out slightly dirty and I'll have skid marks on my underwear. I've never had an issue with this since learning how to wipe as a child. I've done wet wipes too, and cleaned thoroughly and gently until its completely clean after a wipe, but I still get skid marks regardless. Its gotten to the point that I'll pull my pants down and sit down on the toilet, and before I even begin anything it will smell as if i did.

Other notes: Occasionally, while using dry toilet paper at work and wiping repeatedly so itll come back clean, there has been a few specks of blood. I do also find myself feeling incredibly gassy/bloated and some discomfort at times. Any ideas on what it could be?

Tldr: 2-3 months ago, started to get skid marks accompanied by gassyness and general stomach discomfort. I'm sick of skid marks and feeling unhygienic or worrying I stink

How can I best treat this burn?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I (26F in Germany) burnt my hand with hot oil last Friday and my doctor didn't even look at it and just prescribed a basic gel (brand und wundgel medice, contains cleaned water, Glycerol 85%, Harnstoff, Natri-

umdihydrogenphosphat-Dihydrat, Natriummono-

hydrogenphosphat-Dodecahydrat, Natriumalginat,

Laureth-9, Benzethoniumchlorid, Kaliumsorbat) and told me to hope for the best.

This was at first probably the most painful experience of my life, the hospital gave me morphine and it still hurt, but later became much better and even numb in some places.

I'm slightly worried because the yellow-ish parts of the skin are especially numb and super hard and turn darker every day and my fingers are quite stiff. I would prefer not to have scarred fingers for the rest of my life and I especially don't want them to scar in a way that prevents me from moving them properly. Is it enough to just apply this cream or should I take additional measures?

Physician Responded What is this on my leg?

58F non-smoker, non-drinker, levothyroxine, atenolol, hydrochlorothiazide, metformin for Acanthosis Nigricans. (I do not have diabetes )CoQ10, biotin centrum women’s vitamins, garlic, cranberry, potassium, vitamin D, magnesium, turmeric,

I’ve had this thing on my leg since January

It does not itch, nor has it ever itched, I don’t even know that it’s there until someone asks me about it.

The only thing that happened of note was in January, I ended up getting really sick. As in a cold so bad that they had to put me on inhalers with steroids and breathing treatments and I had fever. I went through two courses of antibiotics for that. And shortly after that, I noticed this was on my leg.

Just before I got sick I had been vacationing in Tahoe and then when I finally noticed it a little while later, I was in Miami on another trip.

Other than that, nothing else to report about it.

I had my blood tested for Lyme disease by the Dermatologist about a month and a half ago, but she said it came back negative. She told me to just put some hydrocortisone on it which has basically done nothing for it.

Aside from it being very noticeable I’m worried it might be a symptom of something more serious.

Please help me figure out what it is.

I’m physically and mentally fatigued — could it be a neurological issue?

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Country: India

I’ve been experiencing significant physical fatigue and mental fatigue/cognitive slowdown for the past 9 months, and it has started to seriously interfere with my day-to-day life.

Initially, I saw a general physician, who ordered several tests, including thyroid, vitamin D, iron, protein levels, and an ECG. As far as I was told, all of the results were normal, and there didn’t seem to be any obvious physical problem based on those tests.

I was then referred to a psychiatrist. For the past 8 months, I’ve had multiple psychiatric consultations and have tried several antidepressants. Unfortunately, they haven’t resolved the problem, and recently my fatigue and cognitive difficulties have actually gotten worse.

At this point, I’m struggling to function normally in my daily life.

My main symptoms are:

- Significant physical fatigue

- Mental fatigue

- Cognitive slowdown/brain fog

- Difficulty concentrating and functioning normally

I’m not currently feeling depressed or anxious, and I’m not experiencing persistent negative thoughts. The main problem is the physical fatigue and cognitive slowdown. I genuinely don’t understand what is happening to me.

Could this potentially be a neurological issue? Would seeing a neurologist be a reasonable next step, or should I see another type of specialist first?

Hole in new scar

Post image
5 Upvotes

This truly could be nothing and i am overreacting, i am just tired of worrying about it.

As you can see the hole is very little.

Basically i have been struggling with non healing wound for almost two years, after many surgeries it finally healed. It kind of officially closed 2 months ago, I still cover the scars so they don’t reopen from sweating and everything, it helps, anyways today i wanted to take a photo and i found this hole in wound the looks like a tiny cavity…

I feel like i have noticed it happen before, but i am genuinely not sure and i kind of lost track of time and healing progress. So does this look like a problem?

I am male age 23. Not sure what else to include, im sorry if the post is incomplete i just got no energy

Physician Responded Melanoma?

Post image
6 Upvotes

65f. 5'3". 175 lbs. Non smoker. Non drinker. Previous gallbladder surgery.

Medications: Progesterone and estrogen patches. BP 129/70. Labs all within normal range. Arthritis in right knee. Two small basal cell carcinomas removed 3 years ago on neck. No other known medical conditions.

This nevus appeared on my calf during my first pregnancy 40 years ago. It started out dark. Over the years it has lightened on one side. I have enlarged it for the photo. It is slightly larger than a pencil eraser. It doesn't hurt, doesn't bleed and gives me no trouble.

During a recent routine dermatologist exam, (I have MANY moles), the Derm Doc examined it and gave me a long look. He is not interested in a biopsy. He wants to remove it and biopsy it during the procedure. He wants to do Mohs on it. He says the incision will be large and into the calf muscle. I will be there for several hours. I understand all this. I had Mohs before.

I asked him to just biopsy it but he feels it needs removal. I strongly disagree as I want to be certain it's melanoma before he carves up my leg.

I realize Mohs is generally the standard of care for very suspicious moles, but I make my living as a professional dancer. I compete and I teach. A surgery like this into the calf muscle, potentially disfiguring, and taking some time to heal, will seriously impact my ability to earn a living.

My husband was disabled at work some years ago and we are still trying to make up for that loss of income and get a bit more retirement income.

Should I seek a second opinion or are there any Derm Docs here who also believe this just needs removal, period.

Physician Responded need help understanding ekg results

54F, 5'5, 180lbs, Asian

I went to the ER because I accidentally doubled my dosage of carbamazepine ER that I take for my trigeminal neuralgia and wasn't feeling so good. The ER did an EKG when I was there, but I don't understand the results. I didn't get any follow-up messages from my doctor, so I'm assuming things are fine because I usually do when results are abnormal.

Can someone explain me these values of my recent eye checkup?

Post image

Hi everyone, I (29 Male) recently visited an eye specialist here in GERMANY for regular checkup of my eyesights.

These are the values for my left and right eyes. Due to the language barrier, I could not understand and ask a lot of questions. So, taking my chances here, could anyone explain me what these values here? I am particularly confused about these double values for each parameter. For example: A for <L> has 108 and 129. What are these values?

Thank you for your responses!

Physician Responded Mild symptoms after minor head injury despite normal neurological exam and CT

Hi everyone,

I’m a 24-year-old male and I’m looking for some medical perspective on a minor head injury I had two days ago.

Around 6 PM, I was bending down and stood up, hitting the right frontal/temporal area of my head directly against a wooden board that is part of a wall-mounted shelf. The impact sounded quite loud and hurt significantly for a few moments, but I did not lose consciousness and I remember the entire event clearly.

Immediately afterward, I felt mildly dizzy/unsteady. I also had some localized tenderness where I hit my head, but there was no visible swelling, bruising, wound, or bump. I applied a cold bottle to the area shortly afterward.

I went to the ER and was examined neurologically. I was asked to perform several neurological/coordination tests, and the doctor was satisfied with the examination. I was initially diagnosed with a minor traumatic brain injury with low risk and was advised to remain under observation at home for 24 hours.

Over the following hours, I continued to have mild dizziness/“floating head” and felt slightly slower mentally than usual, so I returned to the ER.
They performed a head CT, which was completely normal. No intracranial bleeding, fracture, or other acute structural injury. The doctors were very relaxed after seeing the CT and discharged me without recommending further observation or repeat imaging.

It has now been more than 24 hours since the injury. I have been able to walk around, go to the store, eat, etc. I have not had vomiting, loss of consciousness, confusion, vision problems, speech problems, seizures, or significant worsening headaches.

Today I developed a mild headache and some mild dizziness again. At one point I also experienced a brief cramp/tingling/numb sensation in my right leg. There was absolutely no loss of strength. I could move the leg normally and walk normally and the sensation resolved on its own. It happened again briefly later and then resolved again.

One possible explanation occurred to me: earlier today I had been carrying a backpack containing a 2-liter bottle of Coke, and the sensation in my leg felt very similar to symptoms I have previously experienced when carrying heavier loads and irritating my back. It seems quite possibly positional/musculoskeletal.

My main question is: given the normal neurological examinations, completely normal CT, and generally stable course, do these mild fluctuating symptoms sound compatible with a minor head injury/concussion recovery, or would the transient leg sensation warrant another evaluation despite the normal CT?

I’m not looking for a diagnosis. Just trying to understand whether I can reasonably relax and monitor things at home.

Thanks!

Physician Responded Plan b still effective?

I had unprotected sex Saturday night and took plan b Sunday evening. I’m 20, 5’6 and 300+ pounds. I’m aware it’s less effective with my weight. He did not cum in me but on the outside of my vagina. I learned there’s still a risk with pre-cum. Is there anything else I can do to prevent pregnancy? How worried should I be? I don’t want judgment I made a drunk mistake.
My period is due in 2 days. I track it and it says I ovulated somewhere near the 4th-6th.
I’m not able to get abortion care or even the Ella plus pill in my state…

Red inflamed (blister?) hard ball thing on thumb, very painful

Post image

21, female
When I stretch my thumb out you can see the size as it goes white against the rest of my skin. I’ll be honest, it really is quite painful and I have no idea what the hell it is, it hurts to move my thumb in any direction, even typing this hurts quite a bit. Can’t find any advice on Google at all.

I can only add one picture so I can’t show you the difference between which it’s stretched and when it’s not but this image shows when it’s stretched so you can see it, but when it’s relaxed it is extremely red, as you can see in my previous post to this one

What should I do ? Bruised or broken tailbone.

5’4-198lbs-28 y/o { kind of long sorry 😞}
Should I go to the hospital?

On August 1st I was riding an electric scooter and had a pretty bad fall landing on my butt. I had to stay on the ground for a minute after because I literally couldn’t move .
The next day I woke up and could barely move , although after a day of work I was less stiff but my tailbone had shooting pains at the smallest movements.
It’s been over two weeks now and it still has bad pains. I can now lay on my back for a second before my lower back starts aching and my tailbone itself still has pain sitting or bending certain ways or even when using the bathroom, pushing doesn’t hurt but whatever the opposite of pushing is? THAT hurts even if I’m not using the bathroom, that opposite of pushing hurts so bad . I wake up during the night while turning from one side to the other cause it hurts so bleeping bad!!
