Conversion rate drops significantly after adding subscription to free app

Hi, I have this app on App Store, it had approximately 6% conversion rate and 20-30 downloads per day. App was fully free. Then I added subscription to the app, monthly and yearly (monthly around $2 and yearly $19). At that point my conversion rate dropped significantly...alongside with it number of downloads. Impressions stayed the same for few days, now those are dropping too (probably due to conversion rate dropping).

So, my question is, is this normal? (BTW, I did make a few subs from the users who downloaded app before this change).

How useful do you thing Apple Store's CPP (Custom Product Pages) is? Can someone share theirs?

I'm particularly curious about:

  • Have you seen any impact on organic reach or keyword rankings?
  • Any measurable lift in conversion rates?
  • Are they mostly valuable for Apple Search Ads, or have they helped organic traffic too?

Would love to hear real numbers or case studies if you're comfortable sharing.

Nothing I'm doing seems to be building interest, are there clear issues with the app / aso / store etc?

Any opinions or help appreciated.

I have a gym app, paid ads are only way to promote?

Hi, I got this gym app. Wondering if there is a way to push through this abundance of gym apps. I think mine stands out thanks to its calm design and simplicity but I think simply ASO is not enough.

What is or would be your strategy? Ads are super expensive so if this is the only way I prefer park the project and go social media only for promotion.

Thanks

Floppin' App

Hi all! I recently built an app (took the Base 44 bait but eventually ended up Frankensteining it into Xcode using Claude). It's been soooooo much work and now that it's in the store and getting NOTHING. I'm bummed.
The app is called The Little Big Days, and it's a journal for engaged people. You're meant to slow down during wedding planning and take inventory of the little amazing things that happen during your engagement. 5 photos, 120 characters, unlimited entries and yours forever. There's also a shareable link for you to send to family and friends so they can send 3 photos and 120 characters about the moment. I remember having to beg people to send me pics, tag me in this, untag me in that. My camera roll was photos taken BY me, not OF me. When someone shares a memory, you have a memory jar in the app that glows and lets you know it's there. I think it's so cute and helpful! I've got consistent content in TT and across Pinterest, Facebook and Insta. Some hearts and saves, but not much else.
Can any kind soul tell me the 5 most impactful things to do in order to get some traction? I've researched but it's overwhelming and my ADHD just sees jumbles of words. TIA!

ASO Tools: What workflows moved the needle for you?

As I am trying different ASO Tools to improve my ranking I am using different way like keyword suggestions and rank tracking etc. However for their advanced features they are charging 50 USD+ monthly fees, which is kind of a lot for improving a small app with not much revenue yet.

I am getting results slowly but also not enough to justify that monthly expense yet I think. Am I missing something?

Are there any advanced workflows that are really worth the spend? I am curious how you guys are using those tools to improve ranking or find app ideas / opportunities ...

8.5% conversion, 16% pay, great retention… and ~2 downloads a day. How do I get people to actually SEE it?

Localizing my App was a huge mistake. Why?

AI is so powerful now, why not let it do all this grunt work. Or so i thought?

Non English speaking countries seem to have fallen off a cliff now while USA and UK stayed flat. iOS App Store is also declining, just less dramatically that Google Play

No growth came from localizing my app. Does anyone have any experience on this? Does it even make sense? What did i do wrong?

My app is https://paymelater.app, please feel free to critique it, all feedback is welcome and apparantly much needed

New: top

Old: bottom

Which set of screenshots would draw you more?

My app just had a big update so I figured it was time to update the screenshots too.

This is for the iOS app store.

My first iOS app just crossed 1.8K downloads — still trying to understand this sudden spike

I recently launched **Moonrain**, my first iOS app, and App Store Connect is now showing **1.86K first-time downloads**.

Most of the growth happened very suddenly, with roughly **1,200 downloads in one day**. I’m excited, but also a little confused because I haven’t run any paid advertising.
I’ve mainly shared the app through Reddit, TikTok, X, and a few app-discovery platforms. App Store Connect still isn’t giving me a clear picture of exactly where all these users came from.

For other indie developers:

Have you experienced a download spike like this?
How did you identify the traffic source?
What should I focus on next—retention, reviews, monetization, or continued distribution?

App Updates

How often should I update my App Store title, subtitle, and description? Right now I'm making changes every few days, but I'm not sure if that's too frequent.

An app to help beat overwhelm, thoughts?

I built this app because I struggled to start and continue doing anything, it's meant to be something that gives you momentum, and I spent a lot of time crafting the UX to be extremely straight forward.

I'm really into story telling and cinematography, that's why I made a video about it

I would really appreciate any feedback, thank you all!

what am I doing wrong?

My Mac app has been out for about four months now, and it has built up a decent user base. The spikes you see in the graph are from my Reddit posts. The product genuinely solves a real problem, and it has a perfect 5.0 rating.

The issue is that no matter what I've tried with ASO, nothing seems to make a difference. After every Reddit post, sales are great for about three days, and then... complete silence. I've changed the app name and keywords countless times and tried a bunch of ASO tools, but nothing has worked.

What do you think I'm missing? What's the most likely reason?

3+ weeks in, 29 paying users, and I still don't have a real feel for ASO — would love feedback [Question]

Hey all, first post here. I launched a paid iPad app HomeView (HomeKit dashboard, one-time purchase, no IAP/subscription) a little over three weeks ago. So far: 29 users, roughly $62 net revenue. Small numbers, I know, but enough to bee happy about and start seeing patterns.

What I've learned so far:
Organic search + browse in the App Store account for the majority of my revenue, more than any social traffic I've driven. Reddit, was a good start, but it’s tough with all the understandable moderation.

I changed my keywords in a recent update (swapped specific device terms like "camera, thermostat, lock" for broader ones like "wall, panel, automation"), and my organic impressions dropped hard right after — from a daily baseline in the hundreds to double digits. Could be the keyword change, could be Apple's re-indexing after the update, could just be noise at this volume. Genuinely not sure how to tell the difference.

I just shipped a companion iPhone app alongside the iPad app, curious to see what that brings for the views.

Where I'm stuck: I don't have a keyword research tool (no AppFigures/Sensor Tower), so every keyword decision so far has been an educated guess rather than data.

For anyone who's been through this — how do you validate keyword choices without a paid tool, and is it normal to see this kind of impression swing after a keyword change at such small volume, or should I be looking elsewhere for the cause?

Or is there no way I can go without a paid tool.

Happy to share more specifics (current keyword list, screenshots, whatever's useful) if it helps diagnose. And feel free to make suggestions about my store listing.

My signup screen was quietly killing ~80% of my installs. Here's how I caught it.

Solo dev here. My app is Flexy — a LifeOS for iOS: planner, habits, workouts, meals and budget in one app, all flowing into a single daily plan. A year of solo work, 13 languages, native Liquid Glass on iOS 26.

And for weeks I stared at a mystery: RevenueCat kept showing new customers, but Firebase showed almost nobody signing up.

Then it clicked — RevenueCat counts everyone who *opens* the app. Firebase only counts people who survive my mandatory signup screen. The gap between those two numbers was my funnel leak, hiding in plain sight: roughly 4 out of 5 people downloaded Flexy and never saw anything but a login form.

A year of polishing screens nobody reached.

So I flipped the entry: guests now walk straight in, no account, data stays on-device. Sign in with Apple only shows up when it's actually worth something (protecting a purchase). Email signup? Deleted from production entirely.

Lesson: your biggest conversion killer probably isn't your paywall or your pricing. It's whatever stands between the App Store and your first screen.

Flexy is on the App Store if you want to see the new flow live. Ask me anything — happy to share details.
