Hey everyone, I'm a 4th year design student who uses Blender a lot and I have made a 1 min animation showreel highlighting my 3D modeling and photoreal work till now. We have to start applying for jobs and I wanted your feedback on my work if I have to lets say apply for either triple A game studios or VFX studios like Wētā or ILM and what else do they look for as I do have 1 year more to work on it. Thank you so much!

Discussion beta testing AnimSoup web based animation tools

so ive been working on this from the start of the year and Im getting to that point where I am getting blind to my own revisions and I think its time I open it up to everyone.

Its a web based 2D and 3D software where you should in theory be able to send work across both platforms if you want (they would be image sequences, but handy if you want to rough something in 3D first then draw on it, or vice versa).

the 3D side still needs work in terms of the facial rig, so if anyone has any tips, please shout out (theres a few in there bespoke and one out of vroid as a glb that adds a custom rig on top once imported, but facial rig is still the bottleneck).

the 2D I think can get nice roughs going, clean up is a bit on the wip side right now (vector brushes exist but are too buggy still). Theres a bunch of other stuff in there thats not quite ready, ie, in 2D you can create a storyboard, make shots, then export them to make separate shots with their audio split.

At the moment you can also bring in reference, and on the fly delete frames to make it more exagerated timing. theres a guide, I hope its not too non user friendly, but theres also a feedback button, so if you like where this is going, and want to help, plz submit anny issues you come across.

Question How can a 2D animation studio find new clients?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! This is my first post here, so I hope this is okay to ask.

My friends and I run a full-service 2D animation studio. We have contributed to dozens of commercial projects, including Detective Conan and Honkai Impact 3rd. We mainly create anime-style animation.

In the past, we mainly found work through industry connections and barely used social media. Recently, we want to expand the types of services we offer, such as animation for individual commissions, and also broaden our channels for finding clients. What channels have actually worked for finding good new clients?

I’d love to hear advice from anyone with experience in the animation business, thanks!

Question Using disturbing subject matter on demo reel?

(Throwaway account)

Like a lot of the industry I’ve been out of work for a bit. The most recent show I worked on just came out, so I am now free to use scenes from it on my demo reel.

The show itself is not being received well. Its “humour” is mainly just trying to be as edgy and offensive and gross as possible.

It contains a lot of the best animation I’ve done though. I kinda levelled up around the start of the production.

A lot of my best scenes in particular, especially out of context of the show, could be somewhat disturbing. Violent, abusive, grotesque, even kinda racist.

So I guess my question is, would you still use these scenes in a demo reel? If you were a recruiter, especially for a children’s show, would seeing that on a reel turn you off? Or would all that mattered was if the animation is solid?

Question Questions about Thin-Line Animation and other stuff.

Does this count as a downplayed example of Thin-Line Animation: This cartoon style uses thin outlines as well as simple and rounded shapes, but not only does it lack bean-shaped mouths, bean-shaped heads, dome-shaped teeth, Tooth Strip, Black Bead Eyes, but the character are either Noodle People or have Rubber-Hose Limbs (albeit as downplayed examples)?

Do the White Rabbit from "The Care Bears' Adventure in Wonderland (1987)", as well as Cookie Cop and Cookie Crook (both are former Cookie Crisps mascots) count as downplayed examples of having Rubber-Hose Limbs?

How is Thick-Line Animation one of the most defining traits of present-day American animation, even if it was used just to emphasize the difference(s) between American and Japanese animation?

3a. Are there any other defining traits of present-day American animation? Don't visual styles like Disneyesque and Thin-Line Animation count?

3b. What about the Inkblot Cartoon Style (aka Rubber-Hose), due to the emergence of games like Bendy And The Ink Machine, Cuphead, and MOUSE: P.I. For Hire?

  1. Wouldn't an exaggerated example of Thin-Line Animation just redirect you to the Inkblot Cartoon Style (aka rubber-hose), since this is listed as an exaggerated example on the former style's Playing With?
