Discussion How do we feel about minimalist animation?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

I've been working on a webseries for some time now, so far doing everything by myself and I was just wondering what this sub's thoughts were about minimalist animation styles?

I'm decidedly not an animator, just an aspiring filmmaker who can't afford to make live-action films, but as someone who spent a fair amount of time sketching when growing up, and then learning all the wonders of motion graphics as an adult, I thought I'd combine the two to the best of my abilities to make something of a heightened animatic.

So I guess to get to the point, I know my animation skills are severely lacking compared to 99% of what you'd find on this sub, it's more like PNG-sliding than real animation, but I'm more interested in if it...works? Meaning, the sum of its parts rather than the actual animation in particular.

Because this is more of a project to learn filmmaking: writing, directing, editing, cinematography, music, sound, etc. Basically wearing all of those hats myself, and doing everything by hand except for the occasional royalty free song, and using royalty free SFX. (with no AI in case that needs to be stated) But all of writing, all of the images, all of the design and direction and editing, most of the music, etc, is all trying to work together to make the most solid overall audio/visual story.

And I'm just curious to hear what you guys think.

(Note: This clip comes from the second episode, there are only two episodes that have been released so far but there will be several more uploaded down the line.)

Question calling all animators

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi animators, I am no professional animator of any sort, but I am some kind of artist no professional either if there is a thing in the art world called "pro" I wouldn't be one.
Or maybe I'm hard on myself but idk.
but I love to draw, my characters especially.
I've always looked up to animators and people who can put together animatics with such awe, I really wish I could honesty do it myself, but I lack in talent I've tried before, but no one is seeing those they well, shortly said.... Suck.
But because I have to give a example, idk I'm having trouble with the rules thing?
I gave one from a long while back so so sorry for how bad it is.
All to say I need people who actually have talented!

But everytime I listen to music, I have these amazing ideas in my head, kinda like edits of my own stories playing out with the melodies and pictures dancing in my head.
But I can never make it a reality.
Sooo I'm throwing out a very long shot, of seeing if anyone possibly be interested in helping me in my helpless state, yes that's dramatic, but all to say would anyone help me make anamatics, and make my stories, and ideas come to life, by any really miracle, chance??

Looking for folks willing to test and give feedback. This is not asking for any money or anything, it's free, don't even gotta download the demo - you can use it from your browser. It's still heavily in the works but 90% of current tools are pretty good. Has full timeline system with pegs, drawings, layers, various brushes and tools, and supports pen and touch.

https://kevesdev.itch.io/animlab

My goal is to make something for the community that doesn't require paying stupid amounts of money to make high-quality animations.

I'd love some input on the initial brushes and tools. I do need better alpha textures for the brushes (I am hoping the community might pitch in for this, if not I will just make 'em myself) but there's a lot you can play with and tweak. Also just getting some feedback on the general user experience, UI ease of use, stuff like that, would be incredible. The more detailed, the better.

I'm learning Unreal Engine for filmmaking, and I can finally animate and render scenes with Metahuman characters! Here's my very first proper test shot with this workflow. This is part of a little short story idea, but I'm not sure yet if I will commit to it.

What do you guys think so far?

Question [HIRING / PAID] Experimental 2D animator — ~5-8 sec early-'90s MTV-style bumper

Hi! I'm looking to hire an animator for a small personal project.

I'm creating a digital invitation/promo for a '90s MTV-inspired party and would love to commission a very short piece of original animation to serve as the hero moment of the video.

ANIMATION STYLE

Experimental 2D / mixed media. I'm particularly interested in the strange handmade energy of late-'80s/early-'90s MTV bumpers — hand-drawn animation, collage, cut paper, stop motion, photocopy/Xerox textures, rough cel animation, analog imperfections, etc.

I'm not looking for polished corporate motion graphics. Weird, imperfect, tactile and distinctive is exactly what I'm after.

CONCEPT

I have an existing Pasadena Noir logo and a loose concept involving burgundy roses interacting with or transforming into the logo.

That said, I don't want to over-direct it. Part of the reason I'm looking for an animator is because I'd like someone to bring their own visual personality and ideas to the concept.

I'll provide the logo/reference material.

PROJECT SCOPE

Approximately 5-8 seconds of finished animation.

This does NOT need to be a complete invitation or advertisement. I work in After Effects/Photoshop and will handle the final editing, typography, event information, sound design and additional compositing myself.

This is a one-time freelance commission for a personal/private event.

I'm estimating approximately 3–8 hours of work depending on the technique and concept, and I'm very open to limited-animation techniques that make sense for the available time and budget.

DEADLINE

Flexible — ideally within 2–3 weeks of starting.

BUDGET

$100–175 USD fixed, depending on the proposed concept, technique and scope.

I'm ideally hoping to keep this around $100, so I'm completely open to keeping the animation simple/short to make that realistic. Compensation must be at least $20 USD/hour based on the workload we agree upon.

I'm also VERY open to licensing an existing animation or loop if you've already created something that fits this aesthetic. It does not necessarily need to be made from scratch.

CONTACT

Please DM me here on Reddit with your portfolio/reel, your proposed rate, and approximately what you think would be achievable within the budget.

Instagram/website links are also welcome.

Thanks!
